Adenovirus inclusion body ventriculitis in chickens and captive bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus).

Gizzard erosions and ulcers are associated with dietary deficiencies and toxins. A retrospective study of histopathology reports over an 8-year period (1985-92) found six cases of adenovirus inclusion body ventriculitis in broiler and leghorn chickens and captive bobwhite quail (Colinus viriginianus) in south Georgia. The relationship between intralesional virus and the pathogenesis of ventricular lesions in chicks and quail in the present study is not known.

The sporulated oocyst of Eimeria colini sp. n. from the bobwhite quail, Colinus virginianus.

The sporulated oocyst of Eimeria colini sp. n. is described from the bobwhite quail, Colinus virginianus. The broadly ellipsoid oocysts measured 24.8 micronm (22.4 to 28.0) by 20.9 micronm (17.9 to 22.4). The L/W ratio was 1.2 (1.1 to 1.4). An inconspicuous micropyle was present while an oocyst residuum and polar granule were absent. The oocyst walls were 1.4 micronm thick and covered with small, evenly spaced elevations. The sporocysts measured 14.2 micronm (12.3 to 14.5) by 8.4 micronm (7.8 to 8.9). A sporocyst residuum, small Stieda body and large substieda body were present. Ooocysts first appeared in the feces between 84 to 96 hr. Freshly-passed oocysts were completely sporulated by 48 hr at 25 C.

A pathogenic challenge model for adult northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) using a vaccine strain of Pasteurella multocida type 3.

A pathogenic challenge model causing approximately 50% mortality was developed in adult Northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) using Avichol, a live vaccine containing the Clemson University (CU) strain of Pasteurella multocida Type 3. A dose of 2300 or 3000 colony-forming units (CFU) of Avichol injected intramuscularly resulted in 30 to 75% mortality, whereas a dose of 230 CFU or less resulted in no mortality, and 58,720 CFU or more resulted in death in all birds challenged. Primary and secondary vaccination of Northern bobwhite with a formalinized anaculture of Avichol -derived P. multocida resulted in protection against challenge in three separate experiments. Dexamethasone treatment of birds during vaccination resulted in decreased protection against challenge exposure.

Bioavailability of lead from contaminated sediment in northern bobwhites, Colinus virginianus.

Sediment from Killarney Lake, Idaho was added to the diet of captive northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) to determine absorption of Pb from contaminated sediment. The sediment, containing 4,500 micrograms g-1 Pb dry weight (d.w.), was added to ground poultry ration at 8% dry matter intake (DMI) for 21 days. Concentrations of Pb in blood, liver, and kidneys of each bobwhite were determined and compared to concentrations in untreated control bobwhites. Treated bobwhites showed no significant decline (P > 0.05) in food intake or body mass over time. In 90% of treated bobwhites, blood Pb concentrations reached levels associated with clinical Pb poisoning (> 0.8 microgram g-1 wet weight, w.w.); and all treated bobwhites had elevated liver and kidney Pb concentrations. It was shown that tissue Pb accumulation can occur from ingestion of Pb-contaminated sediment.

Effects of prenatal visual stimulation on growth and heart rate in bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus).

This study examined the effects of prenatal visual stimulation on bobwhite quail embryos' growth and heart rate. No differences in growth rate were found between embryos exposed to visual stimulation during the late prenatal period and control embryos. Embryos exposed to visual stimulation throughout incubation maintained lower heart rates in response to visual stimulation than did naïve embryos. In a subsequent experiment, naïve embryos that underwent an egg-opening procedure exhibited heart rates that were lower than embryos measured in intact eggshells. Embryos in opened eggs maintained lower heart rates than comparison embryos across time; however, a less invasive egg-opening procedure led to a quicker heart rate recovery than did a more invasive egg-opening procedure. These findings indicate that prenatal heart rate responses may be mediated by multiple features of the organism's developmental context, including intensity and duration of sensory stimulation.

Effects of Phos-Chek G75-F and Silv-Ex on developing northern bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus).

Eggs of nesting birds situated in peripheral areas serving as fire breaks are at risk of being sprayed with fire control chemicals. Acute toxicity tests were conducted by immersing northern bobwhite quail eggs for 10 s in different water-based concentrations of Silv-Ex(R) (SE), a foam-suppressant chemical, and Phos-Chek(R) G75-F (PC), a fire retardant chemical, on day 4 or day 11 of incubation. An attempt was made to relate the treatment concentrations to the actual field application levels. Mortality appeared higher in most groups exposed on day 11 than on day 4, suggesting that on day 11 the extensive chorioallantoic vascular network permitted greater uptake of chemical. Only 24-60% of the embryos survived to hatch at exposure concentrations of 202, 269, and 454 g/L PC when treated on incubation day 11. At higher concentrations including 681956, and 1211 g/L PC, the compound did not completely dissolve in water and clumped on eggshells, resulting in greater hatching success. Exposures to SE at 100 g/L on incubation day 11 did not significantly affect hatching success of embryos but did significantly reduce the percent hematocrit in blood compared with controls. Incubation day 11 exposure to 202 and 1211 g/L PC led to a significant increase in plasma aspartate aminotransferase, and day 4 exposure to 1211 g/L PC resulted in a significant increase in alanine aminotransferase. In addition to elevated liver enzymes, these treatments resulted in a decrease in the number of hepatocyte profiles (1211 g/L PC at day 4 and day 11) and an increase in hepatocyte size (202 and 1211 g/L PC at day 11) in hatchlings. A combination of SE and PC was synergistic (202 g/L PC and 50 g/L SE) at day 11 of incubation with respect to decreased hatching success and reduced bone lengths. However, lower concentrations of SE (10 g/L or 30 g/L) combined with 202 g/L of PC appeared antagonistic. This may be due to SE, as a surfactant, altering the ability of PC to penetrate the egg. Our results show fewer adverse effects following exposure to SE than to PC; therefore application of SE may be less harmful to breeding bird populations.

Induction, suppression and inhibition of multiple hepatic cytochrome P450 isozymes in the male rat and bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) by ergosterol biosynthesis inhibiting fungicides (EBIFs).

Ergosterol biosynthesis inhibiting fungicides (EBIFs) have complex effects on the hepatic microsomal monooxygenase systems of vertebrate species, having been described as mixed inducers and inhibitors of cytochrome P450. In the current study, we examined the effects of two EBIFs in clinical use, clotrimazole and ketoconazole, and two agricultural EBIFs, propiconazole and vinclozolin, on hepatic monooxygenase activities and P450 apoprotein expression in the male Sprague-Dawley rat and the male bobwhite quail. EBIFs produced Type II binding spectra with hepatic microsomes from both species and were effective inhibitors of methoxyresorufin O-demethylase, an activity selective for P450 isozymes in gene family 1. However, the EBIFs varied widely in their effectiveness as inducers of P450 isozymes in gene families 1, 2, 3 and 4, both within the same species and between species. In the rat, clotrimazole was the most effective inducer, increasing expression of CYP 3A isozymes over 450-fold, CYP 2B1/2 30-fold and CYP 1A1/2 12-fold and suppressing expression of CYP 2C11 nearly 70%. By contrast, in the quail, clotrimazole was the least effective inducer. In quail, vinclozolin and propiconazole elevated total P450 content 10- and 7-fold, respectively. The induction response also appeared to be mixed, but in this case consisted of a 5-fold induction of P450s in gene family 1A, a 3-fold induction of P450s in gene family 3A and 4A, and induction of protein(s) from gene family 2, cross-reactive with antisera against rat CYP 2C11 and CYP 2A1. A protein that was cross-reactive with antibodies raised against rat CYP 2B1 was decreased with EBIF treatment. In conclusion, EBIFs have complex patterns of induction, suppression and inhibition of cytochrome P450 isozymes in both mammals and birds, which vary according to both the fungicide and the species.

Thyroid hormone changes in the bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) after hatching.

Total concentrations of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) in plasma, and their biological half-lives were measured in adult and immature bobwhite. Concentrations of T4 and T3 decreased approximately 75% from Days 1 to 10 after hatching. After Day 10, the concentration of T4 did not significantly change as a function of age; however, the concentration of T3 doubled from Day 21 (275 ng/dl) to Day 29 (550 ng/dl) after hatching and remained significantly elevated above adult level (300 ng/dl) through Day 64. Changes in total concentration of T3 in plasma were not related to shifts in hormone utilization, as evidenced by biological half-life.

Species-specific auditory preference of bobwhite quail chicks (Colinus virginianus) is altered by social interaction with siblings.

This study examined whether reinstating specific aspects of the normally occurring postnatal setting (ongoing social interaction with siblings during rearing and/or testing) would influence bobwhite quail chicks' attraction to their species-typical maternal call. Results revealed that incubator-reared chicks exhibit a strong preference for the species-typical bobwhite maternal call over a group of same-aged siblings in simultaneous choice tests at 24 hr and 48 hr after hatching, but only if the birds are kept in relative social isolation. No preference for the maternal call was found at 24 hr or at 48 hr if chicks were reared in a group of same-aged chicks from hatching and tested to the maternal call vs. siblings or the maternal call paired with a live adult bobwhite hen vs. siblings. These results raise doubts about the appropriateness of the usual methods of isolation rearing in the study of species-typical perceptual preferences and underscore the importance of considering features of the natural social context in the analysis of early perceptual and social behavior.

Prenatal auditory experience directs species-typical perceptual responsiveness in bobwhite quail chicks (Colinus virginianus).

The present study examined the role of the relationship between pre- and postnatal stimulus cues in directing perceptual preferences of bobwhite quail chicks. Bobwhite quail were exposed to either prenatal auditory or prenatal auditory-visual stimulation. Both prenatal auditory and auditory-visual stimulation resulted in accelerated responsiveness to combined postnatal auditory-visual cues. However, whether or not subjects displayed accelerated perceptual responsiveness depended on the relationship between the nature of the pre- and postnatal auditory stimuli used. These results demonstrate the salience of auditory cues in directing early postnatal perceptual behavior in precocial birds and help to explicate why prior research in this area has found that augmented prenatal sensory stimulation can result in either accelerated or decelerated patterns of perceptual functioning.

Oviposition and the plasma concentrations of LH, progesterone and corticosterone in bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) fed parathion.

Bobwhite quail were fed concentrations of parathion (0,50, 100, 200 or 400 p.p.m.) for 10 days. Food intake, body weight change, brain acetylcholinesterase activity, egg production, and ovary weight were reduced in a dose-dependent manner. In a second experiment, birds were fed 0, 25 or 100 p.p.m. parathion or pair-fed control food to equate consumption in the 100 p.p.m. group. Egg production was not affected in birds fed 25 p.p.m. or in the pair-fed group, but the daily time of oviposition was more variable than in the control group. Cessation of egg production, inhibition of follicular development, and reduced plasma LH concentration were observed in birds fed 100 p.p.m. parathion. These findings indicate that exposure to parathion can impair reproduction, possibly by altering gonadotrophin secretion.

Effect of anaerobic cecal microflora and dietary lactose on Salmonella colonization in bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus).

The effect of oral inoculation with anaerobic cultures of cecal microflora from adult broiler chickens and dietary lactose on Salmonella typhimurium cecal colonization was evaluated in bobwhite quail chicks. One-day-old chicks were divided into four groups and provided 1) no anaerobic cultures, no lactose (control); 2) anaerobic cultures; 3) 2.5% lactose (wt/vol) in drinking water; or 4) anaerobic cultures and lactose. All groups were challenged orally with 10(4) S. typhimurium at 2 days of age. Salmonella growth in the cecal contents was significantly decreased (P < .05) at 15 days of age in each of the three treatment groups as compared with controls. Protection against Salmonella colonization was highest in the treatment group provided anaerobic cultures only. The results indicated that cecal flora from adult chickens enhances Salmonella colonization resistance in quail chicks.

Examination of the dietary methionine requirements of breeding northern bobwhite, Colinus virginianus.

Adult Northern bobwhite were used to test the hypothesis that dietary methionine levels recommended by the NRC for breeding quail are excessive for wild bobwhite. We tested the hypothesis by comparing immunocompetence, reproductive performance, and chick viability of Northern bobwhite hens fed diets containing low (0.31%), moderate (0.39%), or high (0.47%) concentrations of methionine. Chick viability was determined by assessing immunocompetence, including evaluating the ability of hens to passively transfer immunity to their chicks. Hens were fed the experimental diets for 6 wk on an ad libitum basis. After 6 wk, methionine treatment had no measurable effect (P > or = 0.20) on hen phytohemagglutinin wing web indices, organ weights, or serum anti-Pasteurella multocida titer indices. Mean egg weight, percentage egg production, total cumulative egg production, yolk weight, yolk volume, and percentage fertile and percentage hatch of fertile eggs did not differ (P > or = 0.12) among diet treatments. Amount of albumen in eggs produced by hens fed the high methionine diet averaged 0.27 g more (P = 0.003) than eggs of hens fed the low methionine diet. Anti-P. multocida titer of yolks from eggs in Week 6 were not different (P = 0.36) between birds fed the high and the low methionine diets. The mortality rate of chicks after challenge with 23 cfu of P. multocida was not different (P > or = 0.05) among diets. Chicks hatched from eggs laid by vaccinated hens during Weeks 2 and 3, however, had lower (P < 0.05) mortality than chicks of unvaccinated hens. It appears a dietary methionine concentration of 0.3% may be sufficient for wild Northern bobwhite to produce viable chicks.

Myositis and death in bobwhites, Colinus virginianus (L.), due to hemorrhagic cysts of a haemosporozoan of undetermined taxonomic status.

An epizootic of myositis and death in pen-reared bobwhites occurred at a hunting club in California. The myositis was caused by myriads of elongate protozoan cysts. The cysts were in various stages of development and when mature, contained spherical zoites 1 micron in diameter. Sinuous compartments were present in all cysts. The walls of the compartments were composed of a material similar to the cyst walls. Mature cysts were filled with blood. The histologic and ultrastructural morphology of the parasite revealed the parasite to be a haemosporozoan. The parasite has numerous similarities to both Akiba caulleryi (Mathis and Leger, 1909) and organisms that cause aberrant leucocytozoonosis in other species of birds. Further studies are needed to determine if the parasite is a part of the normal parasite fauna of quail or if it represents a parasite in an aberrant host.
