A comparison of barium sulphate preparations used for the double contrast barium meal.

Radiologists' opinions of the properties of six barium suspensions with their recommended gas-producing agents designed for upper gastrointestinal use were assessed, using a linear analogue scale. Five radiologists independently assessed mucosal coating of stomach and duodenum, areae gastricae, gaseous distension and bubble formation in a total of 258 patient examinations. Preparation 1 (EZHD) was judged to give best overall results, coating stomach and duodenum particularly well. Preparation 2 (X-Opaque) gave good distension and also coated mucosa fairly well, as did preparations 3 and 4 (Medebar XAC and Field 2C). The latter two preparations produced good distension at the expense of bubble formation. Preparations 5 and 6 (Micropaque DC and Baritop G) were judged, by comparison, to have performed poorly as regards mucosal coating. None of the preparations delineated areae gastricae well, even in the presence of good, bubble-free gastric distension.

Barium granuloma of the rectum: an uncommon complication of barium enema.

Barium sulfate granuloma of the rectum may develop when this contrast material is forced through a discontinuity in the rectal mucosa. The ensuing mass may be confused with carcinoma. Preoperative biopsy and attention to plain films will prevent unnecessary inappropriate surgery.

[Coloportal fistula in ulcerative colitis (massive penetration, through the splenic vein, of barium and air into the portal system during barium enema)].

The authors describe one case of massive penetration of barium and air through the splenic vein into the portal system during administration of a radiopaque enema to a woman suffering from hemorrhagic proctitis in the florid phase. They provide a detailed description of this rare clinical case and discuss the possible etiology and pathophysiology of the observed event.

Ba4Si3Br2: a double salt of barium bromide and barium silicide containing a novel cyclotrisilicide unit.

A new compound of the composition Ba4Si3Br2 was obtained by reacting BaSi with a melt of BaBr2. Ba4Si3Br2 may be described as a double salt between a Zintl phase and a halide. The structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (P21c, a= 1504.1(2), b = 884.5(1), c = 880.2(1) pm, beta = 101.93(2) degrees, R = 0.041 Rw = 0.079). The crystal structure contains isolated barium cations and bromide anions as well as novel singly bonded cyclotrisilicid units. The electronic structure has been studied by linear Muffin tin orbital (LMTO) band structure calculations, which reveal semiconducting behavior with a band gap of about 0.1 eV, and by an analysis of the electron localization function.
