Inheritance of hereditary equine regional dermal asthenia in Quarter Horses.

OBJECTIVE: To assess heritability and mode of inheritance for hereditary equine regional dermal asthenia (HERDA) in Quarter Horses. ANIMALS: 1,295 horses with Quarter Horse bloodlines, including 58 horses affected with HERDA. PROCEDURE: Horses were classified as affected or unaffected or as undetermined when data were insufficient to assess phenotype. Pedigree data were analyzed to determine the probable mode of inheritance. Heritability was estimated by use of Bayesian statistical methods. RESULTS: Heritability (mean+/-SD) of HERDA was estimated to be 0.38+/-0.13, with both sexes having an equal probability of being affected. Results for evaluation of the pedigrees were consistent with a single Mendelian autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: HERDA in Quarter Horses is an inherited disease, and affected horses are more likely to produce affected offspring. An autosomal recessive mode of inheritance should be considered by people making breeding decisions involving Quarter Horses when a first-degree relative has been confirmed with HERDA or has produced affected offspring. In addition, breeders whose horses have produced affected offspring can reduce the likelihood of producing affected horses in the future by avoiding inbreeding.

[Immune status of patients with chronic bronchitis and neurocirculatory asthenia].

AIM: To study changes in immune system of patients with various forms of chronic bronchitis (CB) and neurocirculatory asthenia (NCA). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Neurological and immunological examinations were made in 84 patients with CB exacerbation and 51 control subjects. RESULTS: It was found that 60% of CB patients had NCA. No negative effects of NCA on immune system in CB patients were registered. Suppression of immune system and secondary immunodeficiency occurred more frequently in CB patients without signs of NCA. 40% of CB patients had vagotonic NCA in which immunological disorders manifested most clearly. CONCLUSION: Vegetative disorders in CB patients do not affect immunological system. Functional testing of autonomic nervous system is suggested for prediction of immune system condition.

[Intracranial electrical stimulation in the treatment of neurocirculatory asthenia and essential hypertension].

The treatment of neurocirculatory asthenia and essential hypertension stage I and II with low-frequency bioresonance intracranial electrostimulation (BIES) performed on portable two-channel unit SEM-02 led to uneventful sthenic condition, relief of headache, improved sleep and performance, exercise tolerance. The quality of the bioenergetic field advanced in all the patients. Low-energy BIES may be used in many diseases, provides fast therapeutic effect in minimal intake of drugs, is nontoxic and hypoallergic. The unit SEM-02 proved 2.6 and 1.41 times more effective than similar domestic and foreign equipment, respectively.

[Differential diagnosis of neurocirculatory asthenia (NCA)].

170 patients with primary diagnosis of NCA underwent detailed examination by the therapist, neuropathologist, endocrinologist, urologist, gynecologist and psychiatrist. Primary diagnosis was confirmed only in 47 patients, the other 123 patients had different somatic, neurological or psychic disorders. These 47 and 123 patients were considered as having NCA as a syndrome and as an independent nosological entity, respectively. NCA as a syndrome was associated with blood hypertension, nervous asthenia, ischemic heart disease, spinal osteochondrosis. One third of the patients had neuropsychic disorders. The conclusion is made that all the NCA patients require detailed therapeutic, neurological and psychic examinations to exclude hypertension, asthenoneurotic states, ischemic heart disease and spinal osteochondrosis.

Hereditary equine regional dermal asthenia ("hyperelastosis cutis") in 50 horses: clinical, histological, immunohistological and ultrastructural findings.

Data on fifty horses with hereditary equine regional dermal asthenia (HERDA; "hyperelastosis cutis") were collected on clinical, histopathological, ultrastructural and immunohistological findings. All horses were Quarter horses or of Quarter horse ancestry. Pedigree evaluation strongly supported an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. The most common lesions were seromas/haematomas, open wounds, sloughing skin, and loose, easily tented skin that did not return to its initial position. Definitive diagnosis could not be made via histopathology, although the presence of tightly grouped thin and shortened collagen fibres arranged in clusters in the deep dermis was suggestive of the disease. Trichrome, acid orcein-Giemsa and immunohistochemical stains for collagens I and III showed no consistent abnormalities compared to control horses; an increase in elastic fibres was not a consistent finding. Electron microscopy showed no abnormalities in the periodicity of the collagen bundles; neither orientation nor variation of cross-section diameter of the collagen fibrils differentiated control from affected horses. The diagnosis of HERDA relies on clinical presentation, but may be supported by suggestive (although not pathognomonic) histopathological lesions.

Depression or asthenia related to metabolic disturbances in obese patients after intestinal bypass surgery.

This study was an attempt to compare psychological and biological variables in 43 obese patients after intestinal bypass surgery. The difficulties in expressing the psychological variables quantitatively are discussed on the basis of the concept of transferability. By use of an expanded version of the Beck Depression Inventory and the Marke-Nyman Temperament Scale we could demonstrate that items concerning asthenia (self-dislike, irritability, work retardation, insomnia, fatigability, somatic preoccupation about aches and pains, loss of libido, headache, vertigo, palpitations, dryness of the mouth, thirst or increased liquid intake) had, when summed up, a score distribution indicating bimodality. The asthenic group of patients (n = 19) when compared with the non-asthenic patients (n = 24) showed metabolic deficiencies related to the vitamin D complex with no response to oral vitamin D3 administration measured by plasma levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3. The lack of response was associated with low calcium excretion in the urine, higher plasma alkaline phosphatase, and a tendency to higher blood levels of parathyroid hormone.

[Cutaneous asthenia (Ehlers-Danlos syndrome) in a domestic rabbit].

Cutaneous asthenia is a connective tissue disease primarily of dogs and cats, resembling Ehlers-Danlos syndrome in man. This is a description of the disorder in a rabbit. The one-year-old female animal was presented because of two large gaping wounds of the skin. Clinical examination revealed a hyperextensible, thin, and fragile skin. The degree of skin extensibility was evaluated by means of a skin extensibility index (SEI: 19.2%) and compared with those of 4 healthy rabbits (SEI: 8.3%-14.3%). Clinical diagnosis was confirmed by histopathological examination of a skin biopsy revealing reduced packing density of collagen fibers. In addition a decreased number of hair follicles was observed. No conclusion could be drawn regarding the etiology, but existing literature strongly suggests a genetic cause (mostly autosomal dominant inheritance) in humans as well as in animals.

[Research of the relation between the type of asthenia of the spleen and kidney and platelet associated antibodies and T-lymphocyte subsets in idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura].

Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is a kind of disease associated with immunity. At present a great quantity of study on ITP has been made on humoral and cellular immunity. But there are few reports about the relationship between the types based on the differential diagnosis of TCM and immune rationale of ITP. In order to deeply explore the relationship between the types based on differential diagnosis of TCM and immune rationale of ITP., the authors measured PAIg and T lymphocyte subsets of 34 ITP patients of asthenia of both Spleen and Kidney. The value of PAIgG increased in both types of Spleen failing to control blood (SFCB) and deficiency of Spleen-yin and Kidney -yin (DSYKY), and the value of PAIgG of the type of DSYKY was significantly higher than that of SFCB (P less than 0.01). OKT3, OKT4/OKT8 of the type of SFCB remarkably decreased (P less than 0.05), OKT4, OKT4/OKT8 of DSYKY also remarkably decreased (P less than 0.001), while OKT8 significantly increased (P less than 0.001). The above results suggested that the type of DSYKY has more serious immune dysfunction than the type of SFCB, and the types of SFCB and DSYKY has close relationship with PAIg T lymphocyte subsets.

[Characteristics of the voice in patients with glottic carcinoma evaluated with the RBH (Roughness, Breathiness, Hoarseness) and GIRBAS (Grade, Instability, Roughness, Breathiness, Asthenia, Strain) scales].

INTRODUCTION: Subjective voice analysis represents a diagnostic tool in phoniatry and is a part of everyday practice if a phoniatrist has a "trained ear". MATERIAL AND METHODS: This clinical prospective study included a sample of 20 male patients with malignant tumors involving one vocal cord-right or left. All patients underwent otorhinolaryngological and phoniatric examinations. Subjective acoustic analysis was done when patients pronounced numbers from 1 to 10. Afterwards, voice quality was evaluated separately by two professionals using a 4-levels scale: RBH scale (roughness-breathiness-hoarseness) and GIRBAS scale (grade-instability-roughness-breathiness-asthenia-strain). RESULTS: 60% of patients presented with vocal cord immobility. Subjective acoustic analysis revealed hoarseness in 100% of patients (the most frequent value was Mod = 3 intense hoarseness in 45% patients). Instability existed in 100% of patient (40% moderate, 40% intense). Strained voice existed in 100%, most frequently intense (45%). CONCLUSIONS: All patients with glottic carcinoma presented with hoarseness, strain and instability of phonation. Non vibration of vocal cord significantly affects the degree of dysphonia, roughness, strain and instability. Aerodycnamic changes affect voice hoarseness. RBH scale is simple, but GIRBAS scale described more psyhoacoustic phenomena most important in patients with glottic carcinoma.

[Clinical study on effects of tiepi fengdou granule/capsule combined with chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy in treating lung cancer with Qi-Yin asthenia syndrome].

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical efficaly and safety of Tiepi Fengdou Granule (TFG) and Capsule (TFC) combined with chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy in treating lung cancer patients with Qi-Yin asthenia syndrome (QYAS). METHODS: Eighty patients were randomly assigned into 3 groups: the TFG group (32 cases), the TFC group (32 cases) and the Shengmai Capsule control group (16 cases). Changes of symptoms of QYAS, main symptoms of lung cancer, Karnofsky scoring as well as the blood routine test were observed. RESULTS: The total effective rate of symptom improving in the TFG group and the TFC group was 81.2% and 93.3% respectively, showing insignificant difference between the 2 groups (P > 0.05), but both were higher than that in the Shengmai Capsule control group (50.0%, P < 0.05 and P < 0.01). Additionally, as compared with those before treatment, the neutrophil count increased and the lymphocytes count obviously decreased in the TFC group after treatment (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Both dose-forms of the remedies, TFC and TFG, have significant effects in treating lung cancer with QYAS, but with insignificant difference between them.

Cutaneous asthenia in the dog. A report of two cases.

Two cases of cutaneous asthenia in Danish dogs are described. Case 1 was a Weimeraner; case 2 a Golden Retriever. In both instances the dogs had acquired numerous lesions of the skin within the first half year of their lives. The wounds exhibited good healing but led to broad, thin and pliable scars. Both dogs had in several instances received attention to gaping wounds, characterized by little tendency of bleeding. The clinical examination reveiled that the skin was hyperextensible and possessed pendulous folds, particularly behind the elbows. The degree of hyperextensibility was evaluated by means of a skin extensibility index. Furthermore, it was possible to manipulate the digital cushion in an unphysiological manner. One of the dogs were euthanised, and in case 2 the clinical diagnosis was confirmed by histopathological examination. No conclusion could be drawn regarding the mode of inheritance in the two cases, but existing literature strongly suggests the existence of a genetic disposition and thus, elimination of the disease related gene from any breeding program is of great importance.

[The concepts of asthenia and fatigue].

Fatigue is one of the most common complaint of medicine and a very usual manner of communication between people. We must avoid to offer any reductionism. Fatigue is often related with physical and psychological symptoms. The inquiry is always difficult. Asthenia is a fatigue without or before effort. The world of the patient is subverted and we have to try to discover the meaning of this strange situation.
