Effectiveness of photocatalytic filter for removing volatile organic compounds in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system.

Nowadays, the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system has been an important facility for maintaining indoor air quality. However, the primary function of typical HVAC systems is to control the temperature and humidity of the supply air. Most indoor air pollutants, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), cannot be removed by typical HVAC systems. Thus, some air handling units for removing VOCs should be added in typical HVAC systems. Among all of the air cleaning techniques used to remove indoor VOCs, photocatalytic oxidation is an attractive alternative technique for indoor air purification and deodorization. The objective of this research is to investigate the VOC removal efficiency of the photocatalytic filter in a HVAC system. Toluene and formaldehyde were chosen as the target pollutants. The experiments were conducted in a stainless steel chamber equipped with a simplified HVAC system. A mechanical filter coated with Degussa P25 titania photocatalyst and two commercial photocatalytic filters were used as the photocatalytic filters in this simplified HVAC system. The total air change rates were controlled at 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.25, and 1.5 hr(-1), and the relative humidity (RH) was controlled at 30%, 50%, and 70%. The ultraviolet lamp used was a 4-W, ultraviolet-C (central wavelength at 254 nm) strip light bulb. The first-order decay constant of toluene and formaldehyde found in this study ranged from 0.381 to 1.01 hr(-1) under different total air change rates, from 0.34 to 0.433 hr(-1) under different RH, and from 0.381 to 0.433 hr(-1) for different photocatalytic filters.

[Quantitative monitoring of microorganisms in incoming air of air conditioning systems in hospitals].

In eight hospitals the quantity of microorganisms in the supply air of air conditioning systems was determined. A Reuter-Centrifugal-Sampler (by Biotest, Frankfurt) sampled 160 litres of air in four minutes and blew the particles with microorganisms on a culture medium (GKA-medium, by Biotest, Frankfurt). The Agar was breeded for 48 hours at 37 degrees C. The colonic-forming-units were counted and transformed to a volume of a cubic meter (CFU/m3). - In other publications you can find determinations of microorganisms in the supply air for operating theatres up to 15 CFU/m3. We found up to 40 CFU/m3 in the supply air after three step filtration (with an high efficiency filter) and 20-85 CFU/m3 after two step filtration. - The recommendations of other authors and some directives say that in the supply air up to 10 CFU/m3 are acceptable. According to our experiences the supply air should not contain more than 10 CFU/m3 after a 3-step-filtration and not more than 50 CFU/m3 after a 2-step-filtration. Otherwise the function of the air conditioning system should be controlled and the maintenance, too. - We think that according to the different requirements in hygiene a supply air with less than 10 CFU/m3 in the mean allows an unlimited use of the air conditioned room, while mean values up to 50 CFU/m3 are acceptable for normal operating rooms and other rooms, except for operating rooms with special hygienic requirements as for example for transplantation, arthroplasty, heart-operations (corresponds to II. and III. classification of rooms, DIN 1946/4). - Values up to 150 CFU/m3 are acceptable for rooms with normal hygienic requirements for supply air (III. classification of rooms, DIN 1946/4) and for labour-, intensive-care, newborn- and infant rooms.

Effects of inspired air conditions on catecholamine response to exercise in asthma.

The influence of different inspired air conditions on exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) is well appreciated. However, the mechanism by which this influence is exerted is uncertain. To determine if varied inspired air conditions during exercise could affect the catecholamine response to physical exercise, we had 13 asthmatic and 6 healthy children (aged 10-18 years) undergo two bouts of cycle ergometry tests under different air conditions. One test was done while breathing cold dry (CD) air (temperature, -20.2 degrees C; relative humidity, 0%) and the other while breathing warm humid (WH) air (temperature, 34.3 degrees C; relative humidity, 100%). Forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) and plasma catecholamine concentrations were recorded before and after exercise. Marked EIB (48 +/- 5% SEM fall in FEV1 from baseline) developed in all asthmatics after the CD exercise, but no EIB was noted after the WH exercise. Normal controls had no EIB under either test conditions. Plasma levels of catecholamines at rest, and the changes that occurred during and after exercise, were comparable within as well as between the groups in both tests. Catecholamines did not rise in asthmatics following development of EIB. These data demonstrate that inspired air conditions do not influence the sympathoadrenal response to exercise, at least as reflected in plasma catecholamine levels. In fact, this response did not differ between asthmatics and normals, irrespective of the development of EIB. These results are consistent with previous reports about impaired catecholamine response of asthmatics to bronchoconstriction.

Air conditioning systems as non-infectious health hazards inducing acute respiratory symptoms.

Chronic and acute exposure to toxic aerosols belongs to frequent causes of airway diseases. However, asthma attacks due to long-distance inhalative exposure to organic solvents, transmitted via an air condition system, have not been reported so far. The present case illustrates the possibility of air conditioning systems as non-infectious health hazards in occupational medicine. So far, only infectious diseases such as legionella pneumophila pneumonia have commonly been associated to air-conditioning exposures but physicians should be alert to the potential of transmission of toxic volatile substances via air conditioning systems. In view of the events of the 11th of September 2001 with a growing danger of large building terrorism which may even use air conditioning systems to transmit toxins, facility management security staff should be alerted to possible non-infectious toxic health hazards arising from air-conditioning systems.

Measurements of the air conditioning capacity of the nose during normal and pathological conditions and pharmacological influence.

A simple method is introduced for measuring the air conditioning capacity of the nose. A flow of 8 1/min dry air is introduced by a catheter into the nasopharynx, while 5 1/min is sucked out from the investigated nasal cavity through a psychrometer. The additional 3 1/min passes down into the pharynx, thus reducing the intermingling with expiratory air. By using CO2 as a tracer, this error was found to be maximally 15% and often about 1%. The three different enthalpy factors: increase in enthalpy of dry air, vaporization, and increase in enthalpy of water vapour, were calculated separately and the vaporization was found to be the dominant factor. The calculated total supply of humidity showed that the method presented causes at least a slight stress on the humidifying capacity. Pharmacological studies have shown that subcutaneously injected atropine decreased the total enthalpy and that of water vapour, while nasal administration of oximetazoline also decreased the total enthalpy. Nasal administration of homatropine or pilocarpine had no effect on the air conditioning. In comparison with normal subjects, those with vasomotor rhinitis had an increased enthalpy of the air, while the same enthalpy factor was reduced in cases with atrophic rhinitis. Laryngectomized patients had no significant difference in the air conditioning capacity of the nose in relation to normal subjects, while patients operated with partial maxillectomy had a considerable reduction in vaporization and total enthalpy.

Effects of suspension of air-conditioning on airtight-type racks.

Although isolation racks are superior to open-type racks in terms of securing breeding conditions for laboratory animals, the contingency-proofing capability of the former has yet to be determined. Therefore, from the view of risk management, we studied the environmental change in isolation racks by forcibly suspending ventilation and air-conditioning and confirming the maximal time length for complete recovery to the original condition after restarting their operations. The isolation racks were placed in a room that was equipped with an independent air-conditioning system. When the inside condition of the racks reached 22-24 degrees C and 59-64% of relative humidity, the air-conditioning and ventilation were forcibly suspended and the subsequent temperature, relative humidity, ammonium and CO2 concentrations in the racks were measured over time. We found that after suspending the air-conditioning and ventilation, it took 40-60 min for temperature, and about 10 min for relative humidity to exceed the maximum values (temperature and relative humidity) referred to in the Showa 58 Nenban Guideline Jikken Doubutsu Shisetsu no Kenchiku oyobi Setsubi (Guidelines of buildings and facilities for experimental animals in Japan; Year 1983 edition). After 17 hr 25 min of the suspension of air-conditioning and ventilation, two rats were found dead. Then, the air-conditioning and ventilation were restarted. It took about 2 hr for temperature, and 50 min for relative humidity to regain the guideline values. The ammonium concentration stayed within the guideline value with a maximum concentration of 2 ppm in the experimental period, whereas the CO2 concentration was found to exceed 9% at the time of animal death.

Association of air-conditioning with respiratory symptoms in office workers in tropical climate.

UNLABELLED: To evaluate the association of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems (HVAC) and respiratory symptoms in a tropical city, self-administered questionnaires were given to 2000 individuals working in air-conditioned office buildings and to 500 control workers in naturally ventilated buildings. Reported symptoms from the two populations were analyzed using chi-square tests, univariate and multiple logistic regressions models. Symptoms were the outcome variable and the odds ratios were adjusted by gender, age, accumulated work time, smoking habits and atopic background. There was a 79.8% response rate and there was a positive association of nasal symptoms (odds ratio, OR = 1.59, 95% confidence interval, CI = 1.11-2.28), naso-ocular symptoms (OR = 1.58, 95% CI = 1.05-2.38), persistent cough (OR = 3.04, 95% CI = 2.00-4.63) sinusitis symptoms (OR = 1.85, 95% CI = 1.27-2.71) and building-related worsening of the symptoms (OR = 4.92, 95% CI = 2.93-8.27) with working in air-conditioned buildings. In conclusion, our study suggests that artificial air-conditioning is a matter of concern for respiratory symptoms in cities with hot and humid climate. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: This study suggests that indoor air-related respiratory symptoms are a matter of concern in places with hot and humid climate. The regression models were adjusted by confounders that could be used in further reanalysis of indoor air quality related symptoms and ventilation systems with expanded variety of climatic conditions.

Influence of long-term exposure to an air-conditioned environment on the diurnal cortisol rhythm.

In the present study, the influence of the long-term use of air-conditioning in summer on the cortisol rhythm was examined by measuring the rhythm in subjects who had been exposed to air-conditioning for a short [S] or long [L] time. Investigations were conducted twice in July and September. Atmospheric temperature and relative humidity near the subjects were measured for three days in each season. Saliva samples for cortisol analysis were collected every 2 hours during the daytime beginning at 8:00 h with subsequent sampling times at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00, 20:00 and 22:00 h. A questionnaire on sleep and duration of air-conditioning use was also undertaken. Ambient mean temperature was higher in the S group (mean+/-SD; 30.8+/-1.2 degrees C in July, 28.0+/-0.8 degrees C in September) than in the L group (28.0+/-1.2 degrees C in July, 27.3+/-1.0 degrees C in September) (p<0.01), while mean relative humidity did not differ. There were no differences in bedtime, waking time and sleeping hours either between groups or months. Diurnal patterns of salivary cortisol rhythm in July and September were similar in the S group, but the L group had a delayed rise of morning cortisol secretion in September compared with July. These results suggest that long-term exposure to an air-conditioned environment might adversely affect the human cortisol rhythm.

[The effects of work in an air-conditioned cabin and stay in a resting chamber on blood pressure and heart rate of operators employed in deep copper mines].

This paper is part of a wider comparative study of the heart rate, blood pressure, external and core temperature in operators of self-propelled mining machines with and without air-conditioning cabins. Two groups, each of ten operators, characterised by the similar age and duration of employment, stayed for 20 min a specially prepared resting chamber with much more advantageous microclimatic conditions. The results of our examinations (Holter heart rate and continuous blood pressure recordings, external and core temperature measurements) revealed that during the work (particularly during the increased work-load) all parameters recorded were significantly lower in air-conditioning cabins as compared with the group working without air-condition. In both groups, a complete restitution of the heart rate and blood pressure was observed after a 20-min stay in the resting chamber. During the work, a statistically significant increase in the external temperature was found in both groups of operators, whereas the increase in the core temperature was observed only in operators working without air-condition. After a 20-min stay in the resting chamber, a complete return to the normal temperature was noted only in operators working in air-conditioned cabins.

Characteristics of radon and its progeny concentrations in air-conditioned office buildings in Tokyo.

A series of measurements were carried out to understand the characteristics of radon and its progeny in air-conditioned office buildings. Long-term measurements of radon were made with etched track detectors. Continuous measurements of radon and its progeny concentrations were also conducted in some buildings to study their temporal variations. The results show that radon and its progeny concentrations routinely varied along with the working activities. They are generally low while people are working, due to air conditioning, whereas they rise steadily after the air conditioning stops. When considering action levels not only in homes but also workplaces, attention should be paid to annual doses from the viewpoint of radiation protection. The annual dose is generally estimated with a long-term measurement of radon concentration using a passive device such as an etched track detector. Since its reading corresponds to a long-term average concentration regardless of working hours, but, the annual dose will be overestimated. When comparing a real dose after considering the working hours, they differ by a factor of more than 2.

Indoor air quality and energy performance of air-conditioned office buildings in Singapore.

An integrated indoor air quality (IAQ)-energy audit methodology has been developed in this study in Singapore, which provides a rigorous and systematic method of obtaining the status-quo assessment of an 'IAQ signature' in a building. The methodology entails a multi-disciplinary model in obtaining measured data pertaining to different dimensions within the built environment such as the physical, chemical, biological, ventilation, and occupant response characteristics. This paper describes the audit methodology and presents the findings from five air-conditioned office buildings in Singapore. The research has also led to the development of an indoor pollutant standard index (IPSI), which is discussed in this paper. Other performance indicators such as, the ventilation index and the energy index as well as the building symptom index (BSI) are also presented and discussed in the context of an integrated approach to IAQ and energy. Several correlation attempts were made on the various symptoms, indoor air acceptability, thermal comfort, BSI and IPSI, and while BSI values are found to correlate among them as well as with IAQ and THERMAL COMFORT acceptability, no such correlation was observed between BSI and IPSI. This would suggest that the occupants' perception of symptoms experienced as well as environmental acceptability is quite distinct from IAQ acceptability determined from empirical measurements of indoor pollutants, which reinforces the complex nature of IAQ issues.

Air conditioning and television as protective factors in arboviral encephalitis risk.

In California, the advent of television and air conditioned housing has coincided with a general decrease in mosquito-borne viral encephalitis cases in humans in the past 25 years. During this same period, levels of vector populations, virus activity in vectors, birds, and horses has been high at times. Air conditioning and television encourage persons to remain indoors during summer evenings, the primary time when infected Culex tarsalis transmit western equine encephalomyelitis and St. Louis encephalitis viruses. The attack rates for these 2 diseases in 33 counties in the central valley of California, 1945-1982, were compared with the prevalence of household air conditioning and television. Encephalitis rates were negatively associated with television ownership in both cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis. Moreover, individual counties which experienced the most rapid increase in household television ownership had the greatest decline in encephalitis rates. A telephone survey conducted in Kern County revealed that air conditioner and television utilization times corresponded closely to the feeding times of Cx. tarsalis, and respondents indicated a preference to remain indoors during this time because of these appliances. It is concluded that changed behavioral patterns may protect from vector-borne diseases and be complementary to vector control programs.

Prevalence of irritative symptoms in a nonproblem air-conditioned office building.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the prevalence of work-related complaints and symptoms in employees in an air-conditioned office building (Building AC) in a mild climatic area (Italy). No discomfort had previously been reported. METHODS: A total of 198 employees in Building AC and 281 controls working in three naturally ventilated buildings (Building NV) answered a questionnaire investigating work-related complaints and symptoms. RESULTS: A significantly higher percentage of workers in Building AC reported a lack of comfort in the working environment as compared with the controls (30.6% versus 18.9%). The most common complaints were strong lighting, high temperature, and dry, dusty, and/or stuffy air. The prevalence of ocular, upper airway, and cutaneous symptoms was significantly higher (29.8% versus 14.9%, 25.3% versus 9.6%, and 14.1% versus 3.6%, respectively). No significant difference was observed in respiratory or general symptoms. Logistic regression analysis showed that working with video display units and photocopiers influenced ocular symptoms; upper airway and cutaneous symptoms were influenced by female gender and working in the air-conditioned building. CONCLUSIONS: In an apparently healthy air-conditioned office building, complaints and symptoms are reported more often than in a naturally ventilated edifice, but the prevalence is lower than that usually observed in sick buildings. Symptoms are influenced by individual and work-related characteristics.

[Bacteriologic investigation of the hospital air-conditioning water].

We have isolated a pathogenic strain of LDB from the water of the hospital cooling-water storage tank for air-conditioning system. At the same time, other bacteria were also isolated with Pseudomonas and Flavobacterium being predominant, most of these organisms in the water of air-conditioning system were resistant to antibacterial drugs. A proposal to improve architectural design and to sterilize air-conditioning water was suggested.

A problem of hospital hygiene: the presence of aspergilli in hospital wards with different air-conditioning features.

A total of 1,030 microbiological samples were taken in 3 hospital wards with different air-conditioning features: no conditioning system (ward A), a conditioning system equipped with minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) filters (ward B), and a conditioning system thoroughly maintained and equipped with high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters (absolute) (ward C). The air in each ward was sampled, and the bacterial and fungal concentrations were determined by active and passive methods. The concentration of fungi on surfaces was also determined. Active sampling showed positive samples in wards A and B only, with average values of 0.50 colony-forming units (CFU)/m(3) (95% CI, 0.30 to 0.70) in A and 0.16 CFU/m(3) (95% CI, 0.13 to 0.20) in B. Passive sampling was positive only in ward A (mean, 0.14 CFU/cm(2)/h; 95% CI, 0.13 to 0.15). Aspergillus was found in 27% and 22% of sampled surfaces in wards A and B, respectively, but in no samples from ward C. The most commonly found species was A. fumigatus (76% of cases in A and 34% of cases in B). The results show that the use of air-conditioning systems markedly reduces the concentration of aspergilli in the environment. Proper maintenance of these systems is clearly fundamental if their efficacy is to be ensured.

[Investigation of an Legionnaires' disease outbreak associated with contaminated air-conditioning].

An outbreak of upper respiratory infection (influenza-like syndrome) took place among the staff members of a large office building in Beijing, June, 1997. To understand the cause of the outbreak, with a case-control study with serological antibodies detection against serogroup 1 to 14 of Legionnaires' disease bacteria (LDB) and bacteriological test and culture on samples collected from the air-conditioning system of the office building was performed. The findings showed that the attack rates of tonsillitis and upper respiratory infection were 61.86% and 34.62% respectively. The relation was statistically significant between the symptoms of fever and tonsillitis in the cases (chi 2 = 77.88, P < 0.01). The positive rates of LDB antibodies on serogroups 9, 10, 12, 14 were 45.94% in the cases of upper respiratory infection and 3/15, 6/17, 0/15, 1/16 respectively in the four controls groups. Condensied water samples from an air-conditioning system showed that Legionella Pneumophila was positive. Evidence showed that it was an outbreak resulting from LDB serogroup 9 and 12, accompanied by upper respiratory infection related to air-conditioning system contaminated by LDB. This was the first report Lp infection associated with an air-conditioning system in China.
