Age-of-acquisition effects in reading aloud: tests of cumulative frequency and frequency trajectory.

Several studies have reported that the age at which a word is learned affects skilled reading. This age-of-acquisition effect is potentially important for theories of reading and learning. The effect has been difficult to pin down, however, because the age at which a word is learned is correlated with many other lexical properties. Zevin and Seidenberg (2002) analyzed these phenomena, using connectionist models that distinguished between cumulative frequency (the total number of times a word is experienced) and frequency trajectory (the distribution of these experiences over time). The models prompted a reevaluation of the empirical literature on this topic. The present research tested and confirmed three behavioral predictions derived from these models. First, cumulative frequency has an impact on skilled word naming, more so than standard measures of frequency derived from such norms as those of Kucera and Francis (1967). Second, frequency trajectory affects age of acquisition: The timing of exposure to words affects how rapidly they are learned. However, frequency trajectory does not affect skilled reading aloud, because the consistencies in mapping between spelling and sound eventually wash out the effects of early differences in frequency of exposure. Thus, in skilled performance, the timing of exposure to words is less important than the amount of exposure. The results clarify the conditions under which age-dependent learning effects occur in reading aloud.

The development of abnormal axon trajectories after rotation of one eye in Xenopus.

The targeting of isthmotectal axons in the Xenopus binocular pathway is guided by both activity-dependent cues and activity-independent cues. Abnormal visual activity induced by unilateral eye rotation overrides activity-independent cues and causes isthmotectal axons to arborize at new locations during a critical period of development that ends approximately 3 months postmetamorphosis (PM). Horseradish peroxidase staining of isthmotectal axons reveals that they normally run rostrocaudally in the tectum; in contrast, those axons in animals with early eye rotation have circuitous trajectories. In this paper, by studying the trajectories and branching patterns of isthmotectal axons at different times after eye rotation, we aimed to investigate when and how activity cues determine the projection pattern of isthmotectal axons. As suggested by electrophysiological recording, isthmotectal axons initially grow normally and make arbors according to activity-independent cues despite the presence of abnormal visual input. Our findings demonstrate that the development of abnormal trajectories starts by 2 weeks PM in response to eye rotation and is a protracted process. It begins in the tectal regions in which the initial connections of isthmotectal axons are first formed according to activity-independent cues. At transitional stages (5 and 10 weeks), axons with arbors at two different locations are observed, with locations corresponding to the old and new termination sites, respectively. Later, at 10 weeks of age, the fainter horseradish peroxidase staining in arbors at old termination sites suggests that the older arbors are undergoing withdrawal.

Orientation formed by a spot's trajectory: a two-dimensional population approach in primary visual cortex.

There exist a large number of visual illusions indicating that perception differs from pure representation of physical input. For example, a spot of light can be characterized by its position, but it does not contribute any information about orientation. However, when moved fast enough, a continuous streak along its trajectory is perceived that helps to determine the orientation of the movement path. The question arises whether the processing of the trajectory and its orientation are simultaneously represented in the primary visual cortex. Here I show that decoding neural population activity within a two-dimensional parameter space represents both (1) physical input given by the actual position of the moving spot and (2) orientation. This latter parameter has no physical counterpart in the stimulus but must be actively formed by spatiotemporal integration of the spot's trajectory.

Analysis of inheritance of growth trajectories in laboratory populations of guppy-fish.

We analysed the variation of growth trajectories for body length from 40 to 90 days of age in three laboratory populations of Poecilia reticulata. The populations used were two lines of guppy-fish obtained by artificial selection for increased and decreased body length at 70 days and one line maintained under free-breeding condition. The factor analysis performed on the phenotypic correlation matrices among age-specific values of body length showed that a very large portion of the phenotypic variation is confined to a single factor. This factor corresponds to a simultaneous increase/decrease at all ages, hence representing the variation in the height of the growth trajectories. A smaller portion of the variation describes an increase/decrease at early ages followed by the reverse in the later ages, which corresponds to the variation in the shape of the trajectories. The genetic analysis performed on the height and shape of the growth curves showed a additive genetic component for the height in the free-breeding population and for the shape in the selected lines.

Binge drinking trajectories from adolescence to emerging adulthood in a high-risk sample: predictors and substance abuse outcomes.

This study describes binge drinking trajectories from adolescence to emerging adulthood in 238 children of alcoholics and 208 controls. Mixture modeling identified three trajectory groups: early-heavy (early onset, high frequency), late-moderate (later onset, moderate frequency), and infrequent (early onset, low frequency). Nonbingers were defined a priori. The early-heavy group was characterized by parental alcoholism and antisociality, peer drinking, drug use, and (for boys) high levels of externalizing behavior, but low depression. The infrequent group was elevated in parent alcoholism and (for girls) adolescent depression, whereas the nonbinger and late-moderate groups showed the most favorable adolescent psychosocial variables. All 3 drinking trajectory groups raised risk for later substance abuse or dependence compared with the nonbingers, with the early-heavy group at highest risk.

[Software for MR image reconstruction from data acquired on an irregular k-space trajectory].

A PC-based software was developed and programmed with VC++6 for reconstructing MR images from the data acquired on an irregular k-space trajectory. It can read clinical MRI raw data and image data, create numerical phantoms, design k-space trajectories, generate k-space data from numerical phantom, calculate weighting functions, reconstruct images, and carry out error analysis for the reconstructed images. It is helpful to the investigations of new k-space trajectories and new reconstruction algorithms.

Histories of poverty and self-rated health trajectories.

This paper investigates the dynamic relationship between poverty histories and self-rated health trajectories. We are interested in patterns of change in individuals' health over time and the ways in which such patterns are structured by continuity and change in poverty experiences. Data, collected for adults aged 25 and older in 1984 (N = 7,258), are from the 1968-1996 annual waves of Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID). Individual growth curves allow us to investigate health trajectories as continuous processes, as well as individual and group heterogeneity in these trajectories. We find that, on average, health deteriorates slowly over time, but there is significant variation in health in 1984 and the rate at which health declines. Histories of poverty partly accounted for the sources of individual differences in self-rated health in 1984, but they were not related to health change over time. Although increasing incomes were better for self-rated health than falling incomes, current economic circumstances did not erase the health effects of earlier poverty experiences.

[Apparent motion effect under undetermined trajectory of presentation of test dot stimuli].

The influence of such factor as determinacy of trajectory of stroboscopically presented test spot on apparent movement illusion appearance, was studied. Six subjects took part in psycho-physiological experiments during which a test spot was presented successively along the straight line to observer on a display, randomly deviating from this line up or down by 0.39, 0.78, 1.17 or 1.56 angular minutes. It was computed that with the test spot deviating by 0.92 angular minutes from the straight trajectory prognosticated by the observer, the probability of disappearance of apparent straight uniform motion of the spot was equal to 0.75. The findings suggest than one of the conditions under which apparent movement illusion appears involves an agreement between the shape of trajectory of test object presentation as expected by the observer, and its real shape in the experiment.

Identifying and characterizing adolescent smoking trajectories.

Our understanding of longitudinal patterns of adolescent smoking development and the determinants of these patterns is limited. The present study evaluated adolescent smoking trajectories and characterized these trajectories with social, psychological, and behavioral factors in a cohort of adolescents assessed annually from grades 9 to 12. Complete data (smoking practices, novelty seeking, academic performance, substance use, peer smoking, physical activity and sports participation, and tobacco ad receptivity) were available on 968 participants; data were analyzed using latent class growth modeling. Four adolescent smoking trajectories emerged: never smokers, experimenters, earlier/faster smoking adopters, and later/slower smoking adopters. Early adopters were characterized by their high novelty seeking personality, depressive symptoms, poorer academic performance, and receptivity to tobacco advertising, as well as their exposure to other smokers, and use of other substances. Later adopters were characterized quite similarly to the early adopters, although they tended to perform better in school and to be more involved in sports. Experimenters also shared many of these same risk characteristics but to a lesser degree. Overall, never smokers were the most conventional in their profile. These data suggest that there is significant heterogeneity in the timing, rate, and intensity of smoking progression. Adolescent smoking prevention and intervention programs will need to consider this heterogeneity and tailor or enhance attention to risk and protective factors depending on the subpopulation.

[Particle trajectory model desulfurization spray tower used in numerical simulation of flue gas].

The commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software FLUENT is used to predict the two-phase flow in a flue gas desulfurization (FGD) spray tower. The Euler-Lagrange method is used, in which the gas flow is described with standard k-epsilon turbulence model, and the motion of the liquid droplets is described with the particle trajectory model. The procedure of model definition, including force analysis of liquid particle, gas turbulent dispersion and the gas-liquid coupling method, is presented. The results show that the uniformity of axial gas velocity in the spray tower is satisfactory, and the hollow spray nozzle used in the tower can efficiently prevent short-circuiting of the flue gas. The concentration of liquid droplets in the central region is higher than near the wall, and this problem can be solved by optimizing the arrangement of the spray nozzles near the wall. Model predictions for particle trajectory are shown to be in good agreement with experimental results, and the particle trajectory model can predict the two-phase flow in the spray tower successfully.

[Interspecies similarity of the trajectory of reactive leukocytosis].

Reactive leukocytosis was studied in 60 patients after appendectomy by daily test for 8 days. Reactive leukocytosis trajectory in these patients was compared to the analogous trajectory in 87 dogs with experimentally induced inflammation. The similarity of reactive leukocytosis trajectory in humans and animals has been established and a uniform period of leukocyte blood count changes equal to 48 h has been determined.

Improved automatized recording of masticatory reflexes through analysis of effort trajectory during biofeedback.

Tap and sound evoked inhibitory motor reflexes within masseteric EMG were studied by means of a new technique that uses real time analysis of the trajectory followed during voluntary occlusal effort, controlled through visual biofeedback, in order to stimulate on exactly the same activity background. This technique uses a two computers system, doing parallel processing to support data acquisition, video indication, calculus of the pursued trajectory and evaluation of it. Stimuli were automatically delivered when the effort's trajectory fulfilled a set of conditions. Denomination of reflexigram (RFXG) is proposed to the cumulative, rectified and filtered EMG's series so recorded. Normal morphologies of RFXG were established on a 90 normal patients group. Clear clinical correlations were also found within two groups: 30 bruxists and 50 with temporomandibular joint dysfunction.

[Trajectory types of health status during the life of the dairy cow].

This paper presents a first approach of the health over the whole life-cycle of dairy cows, a scale which is intended to define a trajectory. Trajectories are defined as the chain of health profiles on the lactation scale, which are characterized by major disorders: foul of the foot; lameness; arthritis; calving disorders; mastitis; digestive and metabolic disorders; and no disorders. A few examples of trajectories are discussed for life-cycles lasting 4 lactations.

Selective averaging of evoked potentials using trajectory-based clustering.

A clustering method has been developed to group evoked potentials that display similar prestimulus dynamic behavior. The procedure involves using the method of time delay embedding to construct a trajectory in state space from a time series. Certain features that characterize the geometry of the trajectory have been defined. The trajectory-based clustering algorithm has been applied to visual evoked potentials to determine relationships between prestimulus EEG and evoked potential shape.

Examining early-phase symptom trajectories in interpersonal psychotherapy versus antidepressant medication for adults with depression: A dynamic time warp network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Depression is characterized by substantial symptom heterogeneity, which is often concealed when examining total severity scores. Analyzing symptom-level change can improve our understanding of treatment effects and recovery processes. This study, therefore, examined dynamic symptom networks during early-phase interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant treatment, assessing patterns of symptom change across as well as differences between treatments. METHODS: Using weekly item-level Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) data from a randomized clinical trial comparing IPT and SSRIs for adults with depression, this preregistered study examined symptom trajectories in the first six weeks of treatment with Dynamic Time Warping (DTW). RESULTS: Depressive symptom trajectories and DTW-based symptom networks were largely similar for IPT and SSRI. In both conditions, changes in somatic symptoms of anxiety and middle insomnia tended to precede improvements in depressed mood. CONCLUSIONS: Early symptom change may occur outside the core affective domain, underscoring the importance of monitoring symptoms broadly. Symptom-level patterns may reflect patients' stage of recovery and provide clinically relevant information beyond total severity scores. The absence of differences in improvement patterns between IPT and SSRI suggest few indications for treatment selection based on baseline symptom profiles. Future research should replicate and extend these findings to subsequent treatment phases using more frequent assessments and a broader range of interventions.

Genetic heterogeneity affects the risk of incident depression, comorbidity, and response to environment: A prospective trajectory study.

BACKGROUND: Depression exhibits significant heterogeneity in its genetic underpinnings. The role of genetic components in the development of depression and its comorbidities remains insufficiently explored. METHODS: First, depression risk loci from a large-scale genome-wide meta-analysis were annotated to Gene Ontology (GO) terms by functional enrichment. GO-based polygenic risk scores (GO-PRS) were then calculated for individuals in the UK Biobank. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied for dimensionality reduction, followed by cluster analysis to identify genetic subtypes of depression. Multistate models were applied to assess the impact of genetic patterns on the trajectory from healthy status to incident depression, and depression to 26 subsequent diseases, as well as the associations between environmental factors and disease trajectories across genetic subtypes. RESULTS: Participants were categorized into three genetic subtypes: immune-dominant, neuro-dominant, and comprehensive-risk. Significant differences in risk of depression and subsequent diseases, and susceptibility to environmental factors were observed across subtypes. Comprehensive-risk subtype showed higher risks of depression compared to immune-dominant (HR: 1.10, 95% CI: 1.05-1.15) and neuro-dominant subtype (HR: 1.12, 95% CI: 1.08-1.16). Comprehensive-risk subtype exhibited higher risks of transition from depression to subsequent diseases, such as anemia compared to immune-dominant subtype, and diseases of the digestive system compared to neuro-dominant subtype. Environmental factors were more strongly associated with the transition from depression to subsequent diseases in immune-dominant and comprehensive-risk subtypes, including cardiovascular, respiratory, and metabolic diseases. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings highlight the genetic heterogeneity of depression and comorbidities, and shed light on how genetic components modulate responses to environmental factors.

Long-Term Weight Trajectories in Infants Receiving Prolonged Breastfeeding: Impact of Formula Supplementation.

OBJECTIVE: This study compared weight trajectories in infants breastfed for at least 1 year, with or without formula supplementation. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort of 252 infants followed in well-baby clinics. All infants were breastfed ≥12 months and received complementary foods at 4-6 months. Of these, 174 received no formula, and 78 received daily formula supplementation. Anthropometric data were collected from birth to 5 years of age. RESULTS: Among males, those breastfed without formula had significantly lower body weight between 13 and 18 months compared with those receiving formula (10.20 kg vs. 10.97 kg, p < 0.001). From 19 months onward, no significant weight differences were observed and trajectories converged through 5 years. CONCLUSION: Prolonged breastfeeding in male infants is associated with lower weight in early toddlerhood; however, differences resolve by age two. These findings suggest early variations may represent physiological patterns. Further controlled studies are needed.

Classification of organelle trajectories using region-based curve analysis.

A method based on analysis of the region of movement and the functioning of the acto-myosin cytoskeleton has been elaborated to quantify and classify patterns of organelle movement in tobacco pollen tubes. The trajectory was dilated to the region of movement, which was then reduced to give a one-pixel-wide skeleton, represented by a graph structure. The longest line in this skeleton was hypothesized to represent the basic track of the organelle along a single actin filament. Quantitative features were derived from the graph structure, direction of movement on the longest skeletal line, and distance between skeletal line and particle. These features corresponded to biological events like the amount of linear movement or the probability of attachment of an organelle to the actin filament. From 81 analyzed organelle trajectories, 17 had completely linear, 17 had completely non-linear, and 47 had alternating linear and non-linear movement. Selected features were employed for classification and ranking of the movement patterns of a representative sample of the population of organelles moving in the cell tip. The presented methods can be applied to any field where analysis and classification of particle motion are intended.
