[Genetic-physiologic features of reproduction in prolific animals].

Genetic and physiological functional relationships between major reproductive parameters were studied in domestic prolific mammals with special reference to selection-induced changes in fertility and mothering ability in ten generations of pigs of sino-European Tiameslan composite line, which was first bred in France. Based on our hypothesis, balance equations were derived describing highly adaptive functional coadaptations of reproductive traits. Properties of these equations were examined with regard to natural selection. Selection changes of secretory traits of mammary glands were shown to play a leading role in a correlated increase of biological fertility. Genetically controlled regulatory relationships maintained by natural stabilizing selection were established between fertility, sow milk production, perinatal survival, and survival to weaning. Thus, a system of simple complementary equations characterizing an independent integrative reproductive physiological mother-young(s) system was obtained, which had not been previously published. The self-regulated homeostatic mother-young(s) system, studied for the first time ever, ensured homeostatic development of suckling piglets, compensatory regulation, and stabilization at the optimal level of biological (11.6 +/- 0.17 piglets at birth) and actual (10.0 +/- 0.08 piglets at weaning) fertility in the Tiameslan line.

[Recent findings on the genetics of gastro-intestinal nematode resistance in ruminants].

The control of helminthiases in ruminants raised in open pasture has been mainly undertaken by using prophylactic measures in the environment, but these are often inadequate due to incorrect application. With the appearance of anthelmintics, the strategy for controlling these parasitoses, passed to pharmacological treatments which became effective in reducing their impact. However, the frequent and incorrect utilisation of these molecules resulted in resistance to anthelmintics and the presence of chemical residues in animal products for human consumption. Anthelmintic resistance is widespread throughout the world, heterogeneous and probably underestimated. This has encouraged the introduction of homeopathic agents and products derived from plants whose effectiveness has not been scientifically assessed. It is well known that it is possible to detect differences in resistance to the most important parasites between breeds. In Europe, it has been reported that some ovine autochthonous breeds, Scottish Blackface and Lacaune, showed higher resistance. The implementation of breeding strategies aimed at obtaining animals with naturally low susceptibility to nematode infestations could therefore play an increasingly important role. Standard animal breeding techniques have been largely successful in improving the performance of domestic animals in the last century. Standard quantitative selection requires field data on: i) individual phenotype performance; ii) expected covariance among animals due to blood relationship between them. The whole process of predicting the breeding value of animals in order to select subsequently the genetically superior parents of the next generation is entirely based on sophisticated computations (BLUP-animal model). In sheep, the main objective is always selecting for milk yield and sometimes, in addition, milk composition. However, due to the evolution of the EU agricultural policy and consumer demand in terms of healthy and organic food, more attention is now being given to traits related to health (resistance to EST, mastitis or parasitic diseases). Some studies conducted in New Zealand and Australia showed that nematode resistance is genetically controlled with high heritabilities and quite low genetic correlations with production traits. In this sense, some studies showed that it is possible to decrease the number of parasites in the framework of a traditional breeding programme. However, in most situations, this trait is not extensively recorded due to the high cost of individual recording. Therefore, it would be useful to implement breeding strategies based on the knowledge of the genes involved in this trait expression. Traditionally, two approaches are available to locate a gene: i) genome scan; ii) candidate gene approach. The candidate gene approach attempts to link general resistance to some particular genes. To date, genetic resistance against parasites is considered to be linked with the MHC and IgE genes. Furthermore, several gene detection studies based on the genome scan approach for this trait are currently being carried out on both crossed experimental populations (fat x lean Blackface lines and Sarda x Lacaune) and pure breeds (Churra). The preliminary results seem promising as to the use of marker assisted or genotype assisted selection for this trait, which is difficult and expensive to measure on a population scale.

[Alcohol and the risk of injuries in 3 emergency services in Acapulco, Mexico].

The present study of 421 cases and controls was conducted in three hospitals in the city of Acapulco, Mexico, over a one-month period to determine whether alcohol consumption constitutes a risk factor in four types of traumatic events: assaults and fights, falls, traffic accidents, and domestic accidents. A total of 274 cases were selected from the population over 15 years of age who presented at the emergency services in the three hospitals for injuries sustained in these occurrences, together with 126 controls from the same age group who consulted the services because of occupational accidents, sports injuries, and animal and insect bites. The amount of alcohol consumed prior to the trauma was measured by blood alcohol concentration (determined by an alcoholometer) and the degree and state of intoxication reported by the patient himself. The relative risk associated with each variable was calculated using the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals. Logistic regression was used to control the OR for sex, age, schooling, place of residence, occupation, and time of the week when the injury occurred. The results showed that moderate alcoholemia (10-99 mg/100 ml) constitutes a risk factor for assaults and fights (OR = 12.77; CI = 3.69-44.15) and traffic accidents (OR = 8.96; CI = 2.01-39.96). On the other hand, there was no significant correlation between the four types of injury and alcoholemia over 99 mg/100 ml.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Health survey of backyard poultry and other avian species located within one mile of commercial California meat-turkey flocks.

A survey was conducted to characterize domestic and exotic bird populations, estimate seroprevalence to selected disease agents, and describe health management practices on 62 premises containing "backyard" flocks located within one mile of 22 commercial California meat-turkey flocks participating in National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS). Chickens were present on 56 backyard premises and turkeys on seven. Antibodies were identified against Mycoplasma gallisepticum, M. synoviae, M. meleagridis, Salmonella pullorum, Newcastle disease virus, avian encephalomyelitis virus, Bordetella avium, hemorrhagic enteritis virus, infectious bronchitis virus, and infectious bursal disease virus in 367 blood samples from 32 backyard premises. Twenty-two owners of backyard premises said they restricted visitor contact with their birds, and two required visitors to wear rubber boots and use boot disinfectant. Owners of seven premises used biologics and/or pharmaceutics for disease prevention. One family member worked on a commercial turkey ranch, but no other contact between owners, relatives, or employees and commercial poultry was reported.

A survey of Army Medical Department personnel beliefs about domestic violence.

Army health care personnel play a key role in the Army's Family Advocacy Program, yet little is known about their beliefs toward domestic violence. This study surveyed the beliefs of selected Army Medical Department personnel concerning the extent, nature, causes, and management of spouse abuse. The study suggests that Army Medical Department personnel would benefit from short courses designed to increase their information about spouse abuse, prevention, identification, education, and intervention procedures.

[Selenium in human environment].

Selenium belongs to the group of elements which may be regarded as useful only in a very narrow range, while in excess doses they exert a harmful action. The content of the element in soil is usually from 0.1 to 2 mg/kg, with the Scandinavian soils have a low level of selenium, not exceeding 0.3 mg/kg. The highest level, exceeding 3000 mg/kg was noted in Northern Ireland. Selenium content in soil over 500 mg/kg produces chronic selenium intoxication in domestic animals. Selenium accumulation by plants is a selective process and depends on the chemical state of the element in soil and pH of soil. It is considered that the daily requirement for selenium is 50-300 mcg for adults, while the toxic dose is regarded as 5 mg daily. The toxic effects of selenium in the environment include inflammatory processes of the extremities in herbivorous animals (the so called Degnal disease in India and the Alkali disease in Great Britain). Selenium deficiency in the environment leads to the so called white muscle disease in these animals in Great Britain. Selenium is considered also to protect the organism in case of poisoning with lead, mercury or cadmium.

Food and Drug Administration Pesticide Program. Residues in foods--1987.

A total of 14,492 samples of domestically produced and imported food from 79 countries were analyzed for pesticide residues in 1987. No residues were found in over 50% of the samples. When residues were found, they were usually at low levels and rarely exceeded tolerances. Most violative residues were found in commodities where a tolerance had not been established for a specific pesticide/commodity combination. Less than 1% of the 14,492 samples contained residues that exceeded regulatory limits. These findings are supported by the Total Diet Study data, which show that the dietary intake of pesticide residues is only a small fraction of acceptable limits. The program described in this report continues with modifications designed to place additional emphasis on imports, better target both domestic and imported foods, increased the number of selective surveys to add information on residue occurrence, and expand FDA/state cooperative activities.

RESEARCH: Triage Law Enforcement: Societal Impacts on National Forests in the West.

/ Uses of outdoor natural areas, like National Forests in the United States, have been undergoing change. Some changes, including criminal activities and domestic terrorism, may have quite important impacts to outdoor enthusiasts and managers. Activities include some relatively traditional management challenges, like arson and thefts, and newer challenges, such as domestic violence and murder. To better understand the prevalence and impacts of these activities, selected managers in the western United States were interviewed in summer and fall 1998. Results indicate criminal activities and domestic terrorism are found in both urban-interface and rural sites. The most prevalent challenges were arson, criminal damage, domestic violence, dumping of household trash and landscape materials, marijuana cultivation, satanic cult activity, and thefts. Not as prevalent but found in almost all study sites were body dumping, extremist group activity, gang activity, murders, and suicides. Managers felt that most outdoor recreationists were unaffected by the activities. Most managers noted the increasing prevalence and the costs to management in time, personnel, and in other ways. They noted that their job had ceased being one of natural resources law enforcement and became one of "city" law enforcement. The findings of the study raise serious issues that require additional research.

Ambient temperature effects on energetic relations in growing chicks.

The effects of different ambient temperature conditions on the diet selection, intake, growth, body temperature, and activity of immature domestic chicks were assessed in two experiments. In Experiment 1, the ambient temperature either remained warm during both the light and dark phases of the photoperiod, as is characteristic in laboratory settings, or was warm during the light phase and cold during the dark phase. The latter condition reflects the daily temperature pattern in natural settings. Chicks exposed to low nocturnal ambient temperatures had lower body temperatures in both phases of the photoperiod, were less active, ate more, selected a higher percentage of carbohydrate in their diets, and grew faster but were less feed-efficient than warm-reared controls. In Experiment 2, the ambient temperature was either cool in both phases of the photoperiod or cool in the light phase and warm in the dark phase. Chicks reared continuously in the cold had lower body temperatures, selected a high-carbohydrate diet, and grew faster, but both rearing groups were relatively inactive. These results show that an animal's body temperature, diet composition, food intake, feed efficiency, and activity reflect its 24-hr energy requirements and are a part of a general strategy of maximizing energy income and minimizing energy expenditure in response to energetic challenges to growth.

Preventing domestic violence in the african american community: assessing the impact of a dramatic radio serial.

This article reports on the evaluation of "It's Your Business," a dramatic radio serial promoting domestic violence prevention in the African-American community that was made available for national broadcast. Radio stations in 4 study cities committed to airing the broadcasts. However, in only 1 of the 4 was the broadcast carried out in even a limited way. Consequently, only data from one city could be used to assess impact. Even there only 9 percent of the sample could confidently be called exposed, answering a recall question correctly and claiming to hear more than 2 episodes. These moderately exposed respondents scored higher than non-exposed respondents on 21 out of 27 anti-domestic violence beliefs and behaviors; 10 differences were statistically significant. However, the moderate exposure group only displayed stronger outcomes than a group who claimed exposure but could not recall much about the program in 2 out of the 27 outcomes at a statistically significant level. We conclude that the association of moderate exposure and anti-domestic violence outcomes was most likely an artifact of selective perception, and not a result of exposure alone. The evaluation points to the need to better understand how exposure can be achieved to complement our work on developing messages.

[Transgenics and controlled evolution].

Mutation events are responsible for the generation of genetic variability in the populations enabling the occurrence of natural selection which favors the better-adapted types. The exploitation of this variability, though carried out empirically, dates from ten thousand years ago with the domestication of the first cultivated crops. With the advent of genetics, rational selection procedures were adopted with a view of the genetic breeding of plants, animals and microorganisms which might be of interest to men. Recently, new DNA manipulation techniques came up enabling the transference of genes between organisms, cutting across barriers which hindered crossing between the vegetable, animal, protist and fungus kingdoms. The generation of genetically modified organisms, or transgenics, has aroused a heated and controversial debate in various sectors of our society. Yet we must be cautious before generalizing the use of transgenics since each one should be analyzed at a time for its particular advantages and drawbacks, and for its contribution to the improvement of life quality. This paper also considers recent methods of mutation and in vitro genic recombination.

Analysis of mitochondrial D-loop region casts new light on domestic water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) phylogeny.

The phylogeny of water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) is still a matter of discussion, especially if the two types of domestic water buffalo (swamp and river) derived from different domestication events or if they are products of human selection. To obtain more insight, we analyzed the entire mitochondrial D-loop region of 80 water buffaloes of four different breeds, i.e., 19 swamp buffaloes (Carabao) and 61 river buffaloes (Murrah, Jafarabadi, and Mediterranean), sampled in Brazil and Italy. We detected 36 mitochondrial haplotypes with 128 polymorphic sites. Pooled with published data of South-East Asian and Australian water buffaloes and based on comprehensive median-joining network and population demography analyses we show evidence that both river and swamp buffaloes decent from one domestication event, probably in the Indian subcontinent. However, the today swamp buffaloes have an unravelled mitochondrial history, which can be explained by introgression of wild water buffalo mtDNA into domestic stocks. We are also discussing indications for an independent domestication of buffaloes in China.

Japanese domesticated chickens have been derived from Shamo traditional fighting cocks.

With the aim of elucidating the evolutionary origin of Japanese domesticated chickens, this study evolutionarily analyzed 85 chicken mtDNA sequences. Thirty-four various ornamental chickens, 42 fighting cocks (Shamo), and nine long-crowing chickens (Naganakidori) were included. Of the Shamo, 18 were sampled from Okinawa, while the remaining 24 were collected in other islands around Japan. In addition, three Southeast Asian Junglefowls were used as a reference to determine the common ancestor of Japanese domesticated chickens. A phylogenetic tree was constructed for the 88 mtDNA sequences revealing that the Shamo group from Okinawa clearly diverged from the other Japanese domesticated chickens studied. This strongly suggests that all Japanese domesticated chickens, including the ornamental varieties and Naganakidori, derived from the ancestors of the Shamo in Okinawa. To create novel varieties of ornamental chickens, intensive artificial selection is imposed on ancestral Shamo populations, resulting in profoundly differentiated Japanese domesticated chickens.

A practice-centered intervention to increase screening for domestic violence in primary care practices.

BACKGROUND: Interventions to change practice patterns among health care professionals have had mixed success. We tested the effectiveness of a practice centered intervention to increase screening for domestic violence in primary care practices. METHODS: A multifaceted intervention was conducted among primary care practice in North Carolina. All practices designated two individuals to serve as domestic violence resources persons, underwent initial training on screening for domestic violence, and participated in 3 lunch and learn sessions. Within this framework, practices selected the screening instrument, patient educational material, and content best suited for their environment. Effectiveness was evaluated using a pre/post cross-sectional telephone survey of a random selection of female patients from each practice. RESULTS: Seventeen practices were recruited and fifteen completed the study. Baseline screening for domestic violence was 16% with a range of 2% to 49%. An absolute increase in screening of 10% was achieved (range of increase 0 to 22%). After controlling for clustering by practice and other patient characteristics, female patients were 79% more likely to have been screened after the intervention (OR 1.79, 95% CI 1.43-2.23). CONCLUSION: An intervention that allowed practices to tailor certain aspects to fit their needs increased screening for domestic violence. Further studies testing this technique using other outcomes are needed.

Nurses' understanding of domestic violence.

Domestic violence is considered to be an important health care issue world wide. In order to provide appropriate support and treatment to women who have been abused, it is essential that nurses understand and recognise domestic violence. This study aimed to explore nurses' understanding of domestic violence issues utilising a grounded theory approach. A total of 41 emergency nurses was interviewed in selected Australian and Japanese emergency departments. Analysis of data identified six groups of nurse perceivers of domestic violence: nave perceivers, inexperienced perceivers, compassionate perceivers, proactive perceivers, acting perceivers and reluctant perceivers. Findings indicate that the provision of ongoing education and instigation of policy and protocol enable nurses to respond in a structured manner when they encounter women who have been abused. As a result, nurses can contribute to the amelioration of violence in society and enhance the wellbeing of these women.

Convergent adaptation of human lactase persistence in Africa and Europe.

A SNP in the gene encoding lactase (LCT) (C/T-13910) is associated with the ability to digest milk as adults (lactase persistence) in Europeans, but the genetic basis of lactase persistence in Africans was previously unknown. We conducted a genotype-phenotype association study in 470 Tanzanians, Kenyans and Sudanese and identified three SNPs (G/C-14010, T/G-13915 and C/G-13907) that are associated with lactase persistence and that have derived alleles that significantly enhance transcription from the LCT promoter in vitro. These SNPs originated on different haplotype backgrounds from the European C/T-13910 SNP and from each other. Genotyping across a 3-Mb region demonstrated haplotype homozygosity extending >2.0 Mb on chromosomes carrying C-14010, consistent with a selective sweep over the past approximately 7,000 years. These data provide a marked example of convergent evolution due to strong selective pressure resulting from shared cultural traits-animal domestication and adult milk consumption.
