Epoxy-based production of wind turbine rotor blades: occupational contact allergies.

BACKGROUND: An industry producing rotor blades for wind turbines with an epoxy-based technology had experienced an increasing number of workers with dermatitis, among whom the frequency of occupational contact allergy (OCA) was suspected to be underestimated. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the frequency of OCA by patch-testing with a specially profiled occupational patch test series. METHODS: In a blinded study design, 603 workers were first interviewed and thereafter clinically examined. Based on a history of work-related skin disease, clinical findings of dermatitis, or both, 325 (53.9%) of the workers were patch-tested with an occupational patch test series and the European Standard patch test series. RESULTS: Of the 603 investigated workers, 10.9% had OCA and 5.6% had contact allergy to epoxy resin in the standard test series. Contact allergy to amine hardeners/catalysts was found in 4.1% of the workers. Among the workers with OCA, 48.5% reacted to work material other than epoxy resin in the European Standard patch test series. CONCLUSION: Approximately 50% of the workers with OCA would not have been detected if only the European Standard patch test series had been used.

Fiber manufacturing, membrane classification, and winding technologies associated with membrane oxygenators.

Fiber bundling refers to the process of winding hollow polypropylene fibers onto the central core of a membrane oxygenator. Identifying the various bundling techniques serves to facilitate the clinician's understanding of unique device characteristics and the subsequent manufacturing process. This technical information has been voluntarily provided by the product managers and engineers of current membrane manufacturers. Currently the industry employs four primary bundling techniques: single strand, mat configuration, tape and helical. Single strand wraps one fiber at a time, up and down a central core to create the fiber bundle. A modification of the single strand technique is the single strand multi toe, where multiple fibers are wound at a time. Mat technology wraps a large, woven sheet consisting of uniformly placed fibers and spacing filaments, around the oxygenator core. A modification is the double mat, where two sheets of fibers oriented at a specific bias to each other, are wrapped to yield a fiber bundle. Tape technology involves evenly spaced fibers, 5 to 10 fibers wide, wrapped up and down the length of the core. Helical utilizes a spacing filament that is spiraled around each individual fiber and then around the core of the device.

[The application of aerodynamic method for the evaluation of the efficiency of the vocal, articulation and respiratory organs during singing and playing wind instruments].

This paper discusses the application of the aerodynamic method for the estimation of the efficiency of the vocal articulation and respiratory organ during singing and playing wind instruments. An evaluation of the vocal and respiratory organ was carried out on the basis of an analysis and correlation between the following parameters: PV--phonation volume, MPT--maximum phonation/playing time, SP--subglottal/blowing pressure, MFR--mean flow rate, GR--glottal resistance, EP--expiratory power, W--work. Volume and airflow was measured by a pneumotachometr with an electronic spirometer. The application of a plethysmographic booth made it possible to carry out non-invasive, indirect measurements of the subglottal and blowing pressure. Changes of pressure during singing and playing were recorded in the form of an aerodynamogram curve. This curve was used to determine the maximum duration of sound. Other quantities were derived from a mathematical analysis.

Hemoptysis in musical wind instrument players.

Three cases of haemoptysis amongst musical wind instrument players encountered in last five years are reported. None had an identifiable pathology in lungs. Detailed investigations including computed tomography of chest and fibreoptic bronchoscopy were normal. Turbulent airflow, frictional trauma to airways due to repeated blowing is proposed as the underlying aetio-pathogenesis.

Survival of bacterial isolates exposed to simulated Jovian trapped radiation belt electrons and solar wind protons.

With missions to Jupiter, the spacecraft will be exposed for extended durations to solar wind radiation and the Jovian trapped radiation belt. This study is designed to determine the effect of these radiation environments on spacecraft bacterial isolates. The information can be used in the probability of contamination analysis for these missions. A bacterial subpopulation from Mariner Mars 1971 spacecraft (nine spore-forming and three non-spore-forming isolates) plus two comparative organisms, Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 17917 and a strain of Bacillus subtilis var. niger, were exposed to 2, 12, and 25 MeV electrons at different doses with simultaneous exposure to a vacuum of 1.3 x 10(-4) N m-2 at 20 and -20 degrees C. The radioresistance of the subpopulation was dependent on the isolate, dose and energy of electrons. Temperature affected the radioresistance of only the spore-forming isolates. Survival data indicated that spores were reduced approximately 1 log/1500 J kg-1 (10 J kg-1=1 krad), while non-spore-forming isolates (micrococci) were reduced 1.5-2 logs/1500 J kg-1 with the exception of an apparent radioresistant isolate whose resistance approached that of the spores. The subpopulation was found to be less resistant to lower energy than to higher energy electrons. The bacterial isolates were exposed to 3 keV protons under the same conditions as the electrons with a total fluence of 1.5 x 10(13) p cm-2 and a dose rate of 8.6 x 10(9) p cm-2 s-1. The results showed that only 20% of S. epidermidis and 45% of B. subtilis populations survived exposure to the 3 keV protons, while the mean survival of the spacecraft subpopulation was 45% with a range from 31.8% (non-spore-former) to 64.8% (non-spore-former). No significant difference existed between spore-forming and non-spore-forming isolates.

Treatment of fever due to exopathic wind-cold by rapid acupuncture.

57 cases of common cold, influenza, acute tonsillitis and acute bronchitis were treated by rapid needling with filiform needles at Dazhui (Du 14), Fengchi (GB 13), and Quchi (LI 11). The indices for observation were first determined, and the 19 cases that manifested an axilla temperature drop of over 1 degree C after treatment and a ratio of < 0.3 of the main symptom scores after treatment were regarded as markedly effective; the 27 cases that manifested an axilla temperature drop of 0.5-1.0 degree C and a symptom score ratio of 0.3-0.6 were regarded as effective, and the 11 cases that manifested an axilla temperature drop of < 0.5 degrees C and a symptom score ratio of > 0.7 were regarded as failures. The total effective rate was 80.7%. Analysis of the individual patients indicated that the peripheral blood leucocyte and lymphocyte counts differed insignificantly after needling, while the body temperature, rate of respiration, pulse, blood pressure and acupoint temperature all dropped, with a simultaneous increase in the percentage of T-lymphocytes. The immediate effects were especially marked in fevers due to exogenous wind and cold.

[Athletic injuries in wind surfing].

We made an anamnesis of sports related injuries for 189 members of the Swiss Wind Surfing Federation. This data enabled us to calculate an yearly incidence of 0.02 injuries per athlete. By comparison, this frequency amounts to 0.03 for tennis players, to 0.24 in football and 2.30 for competitive cyclists. Feet injuries made up for 36.5% of all cases, whereas legs were affected for 23.5%. The athlete had to stop his training for 25.2 days on average. His work had to be interrupted for 10.2 days and his mean hospital stay was of 2.0 days. One third of all injuries were due to board contact events, 20% happened on the shore and 19% were ascribed to falls on/of the mast. Bruises and other wounds were mainly due to the lack of surf-shoes and/or other protective clothing items.

[Bis-(2-guanidoethyl)-disulfide, when complexed with DNA, prevents its winding within the B-family].

Earlier we have shown that DNA forms stoichiometric complexes with bis-(2-guanidoethyl)-disulfide (GED), the helix being transformed from the B-like structure into the C-like one. The present work demonstrates that the DNA helix in the saturated complex does not change its conformation within a broad range of conditions: 0 less than [NaCl] less than 5.10(-2) M; 0% less than [methanol] less than 60% (v/v); 5 degrees less than temperature less than 50 degrees. Free DNA undergoes a non-cooperative winding within the B-family under all these influences. Increase in NaCl concentration beyond 5.10(-2) M results in abrupt cooperative unwinding from the C-like form to the B-like one, apparently due to GED dissociation. The obtained data are in accord with the idea that the conformational transition of DNA within the B-family is induced by change of phosphates interaction with the hydrated cations of alcaline metals; formation of strong hydrogen bonds of the phosphates with GED makes the DNA helix non-sensitive to variations of the environment.

Successful correction of velopharyngeal stress incompetence in musicians playing wind instruments.

Two professional musicians who played wind instruments developed velopharyngeal stress incompetence which prevented them from generating the high intraoral pressures required to play their instruments. In both cases, we did a V-Y pushback with a superiorly-based pharyngeal flap. At 1 1/2 and two years postoperatively, both patients remain free of velopharyngeal incompetence and are actively engaged in their musical careers.

A wind-tunnel study of the flow of air pollution in Armadale, central Scotland.

A wind-tunnel experiment was performed to clarify the effect of local topography on the distribution of air pollution from a steel foundry in Armadale, central Scotland, under various conditions of air flow. The findings indicated that two areas, one directly to the southwest of the foundry and the other in the north of the town, were liable to receive pollution more frequently than had been expected. These observations were used to interpret the results of earlier investigations which had demonstrated relatively high concentrations of metal pollutants in areas of the town which also had surprisingly high mortality from lung cancer during previous years.

Winding anomalies in nuclear DNA from malignant cells II. Functional implications.

A molecular mechanism is proposed by which physical, chemical and viral cancerogens together with DNA topoisomerases of type I effect an increase in the topological winding deficiency of nuclear DNA inside living cells. The resulting conformational changes of DNA, as monitored by an abnormally high negative superhelical density, could be of general relevance in the expression of the malignant cell phenotype.

Wind-up and neuroplasticity: is there a correlation to clinical pain?

It is neurophysiologically and neurobiologically verified that the central nociceptive system can undergo changes and become hyperexcitable. Hyperexcitability involves wind-up (exaggerated responses) of dorsal horn neurones which in humans can be studied (temporal summation) by electrophysiological and psychophysical reactions to repeated nociceptive stimuli. Temporal summation occurs if repeated stimuli evoke increasing pain reactions. Human experimental models are adequate to investigate basic aspects and pharmacological modulation of summation and to bridge the gap between basic and clinical sciences facilitating the transfer of knowledge from basic science into the clinic. Human experimental investigations have confirmed animal studies that show that central summation is a potent mechanism in both normal and pathophysiological (hyperexcitable) conditions. Central summation should be considered as a target for the development of new centrally acting analgesics, for designing management regimens to treat intractable pain, and as a possible way of inhibiting surgically-induced afferent barrage from reaching brain centres (subconscious pain) during anaesthesia.

[Peculiarities of DNA winding with bifunctional cations].

Addition of the bifunctional cations, bis(2-aminoethyl) disulphide-cystamine, and bis(2-guanidoethyl) disulphide-GED, into water solution of DNA results in a decrease in magnitude of the positive circular dichroism (CD) band. However, unlike the similar effect due to alcaline ions or ions of ammonium and guanidinium the above effect occurs at much smaller, stoichiometric with phosphates, concentrations of the dications. Another peculiarity of GED is the attaining of a plato region for the curve of the CD change with the rise of GED concentration. Since the decrease in positive band CD is connected with increase in the rotation angle between the base pairs, the observed behavior of the bifunctional cations are supposedly due to peculiarities of their winding action upon DNA helix. Reducing the disulphide bond in the cations gives rise to increase in the DNA positive CD band up to the values inherent to those in the presence of the corresponding monocations. The higher efficiency of the bifunctional cations is thus due to the cationic groups belong to one and the same molecule. Such compounds could thus be considered as a simple model of DNA-protein interaction.

[Functional features of wind-sensitive receptors triggering the wing muscle neurons of the desert locust, Calliptamus barbarus].

At each side of the head of C. barbarus, 5 receptive fields were found triggering the activity of neurons which directly control the work of wing apparatus. Total number of wind-sensitive receptors (presented by trichoid sensillae) amounts up to 200. Lateral receptive fields 1 and 5 are most developed and contain 24 +/- 5 and 23 +/- 4 sensillae respectively. In the response of a receptor to adequate stimulation, two components may be differentiated--phasic and tonic ones. The discharge frequency of the tonic component is equal to 90--100 impulses per sec. Simultaneous recording of impulse activity in axons of two receptors reveals a possibility of interaction of the receptors. In the experiments performed, this peripheral interaction was of the inhibitory nature. Functional peculiarities of the receptor investigated are discussed.

A study of acute "short-wind" (pneumonia) in village pigs of Papua New Guinea.

Observations were made over a 12-month period in two villages of the incidence and nature of an acute pneumonia syndrome of village pigs. A detailed ante-mortem and post-mortem examination was made of seven pigs with acute pneumonia, "short-wind". The principal ante-mortem findings were gross malnourished stunted young pigs with severe respiratory embarrassment. Post-mortem examination revealed acute bacterial pneumonia, superimposed on existing chronic enzootic and lungworm pneumonia. No single bacterial species was constantly isolated, Pastuerella spp. and Staphylococcus were the most frequently isolated. The pathogenesis of the disease is discussed. It is suggested that enzootic pneumonia is not a significant limiting factor in traditional pig husbandry. Low nutritional status and heavy nematode infections resulting in increased susceptibility to bacterial pneumonia of pigs are thought to be responsible for the high incidence and mortality from acute pneumonia.
