Primary osteomyelitis consequent to obligate anaerobic microorganisms represents an infrequently encountered type of infection in pediatric patients. Unlike osteomyelitis caused by more common microorganisms such as Staphylococcus, children with osseous lesions due to anaerobic microorganisms are frequently minimally symptomatic and rarely present the classic signs of fulminant osteomyelitis. Radiographically, the lesions may mimic malignant osseous tumors. Fastidious microbiologic analysis of the material obtained at surgery is necessary to isolate obligate anaerobes. Basic treatment, comprising surgical drainage and appropriate antimicrobial agents, does not differ from that for osteomyelitis caused by aerobic or by facultative anaerobic microorganisms.
Anaerobic paraproctitis (AP) was seen in 8.6% of 1057 cases with acute paraproctitis. Severe general condition of the patient, vast damage, fetid wound secretion, extensive detachment and necrosis of tissues were the main AP symptoms. Radical excision of affected tissues with daily revision and sanatation in combination with intensive general therapy permits to reduce mortality to 4.3%. In early postoperative period reversible insufficiency of anal sphincter developed in 16.1% AP patients. It is necessary to close wounds as early as possible. Perforated cutaneous pedicle flap from posterior wall of the scrotum may be successfully used for plastic repair of perineum wound.

Subphrenic abscess is a rare complication of amebic liver abscess, its diagnosis and treatment are problematic. We present one patient with a right subphrenic abscess secondary to amebiasis. Treatment with chloramphenicol and percutaneous drainage had good response. Radiological intervention is an option in treatment of this kind of complication.

The antibacterial effect of 0.25% metronidazole solution as root canal irrigant on anaerobic bacteria was studied in ten central incisors. Each tooth was treated at four appointments, and the presence of anaerobes in the root canal was studied on each occasion. No antibacterial intracanal dressings were used between the appointments. No anaerobes could be recovered from any tooth on the fifth appointment. In the control group, where normal saline was used as an irrigant, anaerobes could be recovered in four of the ten canals. These results suggest that 0.25% metronidazole solution is more effective than saline solution as a root canal irrigant.
On the basis of clinico-microbiological examinations the presence of anaerobic flora was found in 104 out of 198 patients with peritonitis. The authors propose using intra-aortal++ transfusions of oxygenated blood in complex therapy of anaerobic peritonitis.

Minimum inhibitory and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MIC, MBC) of tinidazole for 80 New Zealand isolates of anaerobic bacteria were determined. Growth of 95 percent of the isolates was inhibited by 4 micrograms/ml or less of tinidazole. MBC values were the same as, or one dilution higher than, the MIC.
