Excited complexes in oxidation-reduction photoreactions of pigments. I. Spectral detection of triplet state exciplex in the chlorophyll oxidation reaction.

Photooxidation of chlorophyll "a" with p-benzoquinone in toluene and dioxane is studied by the method of flash photolysis. It is shown that in nonpolar medium the triplet exiplex is the product of this reaction. The experiments on competitive quenching of chlorophyll triplet state with naphthacene prove the diffusion mechanism of exiplex formation. The spectrum of triplet-triplet absorption of the exiplex is presented and the rate constant of intercombination degradation equalling 1.103 sec(-1) is measured. Possible structure of the exiplex is discussed.

A kinetic completion of the cyclic photosynthetic electron pathway of Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides: cytochrome b-cytochrome c2 oxidation-reduction.

In Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides, following a single-turnover flash of light, cytochrome c2 is oxidized by reaction center bacteriochlorophyll, and a cytochrome b is reduced by the primary electron acceptor, probably via ubiquinone. In this report we show that, in the uncoupled state, the rate of re-oxidation of the cytochrome b is identical to the rate of reduction of the cytochrome c2, a kinetic completion of the cyclic photosynthetic electron transport system.

Gene organization for nitric oxide reduction in Alcaligenes faecalis S-6.

norB and norC encoding the cytochrome b-containing subunit and the cytochrome c-containing subunit, respectively, of the nitric oxide reductase (NOR) in Alcaligenes faecalis S-6 were cloned and sequenced. Both NorB and NorC showed more than 40% sequence identity to the corresponding subunits of cytochrome bc-type NORs in other denitrifying bacteria. norCB was in a gene cluster containing seven other genes; these were named dnr, orf2, orf3, norE, norF, norQ, and norD on the basis of their similarity with NOR systems in other bacteria. Potential FNR-binding sites were present in front of norCB, norEF, and/or orf2/orf3, suggesting that most of these genes are regulated simultaneously by an FNR-related protein. NorB and NorC proteins produced in the membrane fraction in Escherichia coli showed no enzyme activity, probably due to lack of NorQ and NorD, which appear to perform some essential function for activation of the NorB-NorC complex in the recombinant E. coli.

[The effect of aromatic plant substances on the status of oxidative-reductive enzymes in a chronic experiment].

In chronic experiment (during 3 months) was studied the influence of various vegetable aromatic substances (VAS) contents in the air upon oxidative-restoration enzymes activity in experimental animals (Wistar line male rats). On the base these experiments' results may be made a conclusion that the lack of VAS in the air involves changes in the most important enzymes of glycolysis and pentosophosphatic cycle. Provision of the atmosphere with essential lavender oil in concentration 0.58 mg/m3 (natural concentration) may correct such disturbances.
