Much has been done to give blind people access to text-based information through computers. Unfortunately, the recent development of Windows operating systems and GUIs jeopardize these gains. Spatial information which is becoming more important to the sighted has never been widely available to blind people. Through a combination of gesture input with audio output, the KnowWare system offers blind users a new way to access spatial information. An invisible virtual map is defined on the desktop. When the user touches a feature on the map with the tip of his index finger, the computer tells him what he has touched by means of computer-generated speech or synthesized sound codes. Touching is detected by means of an overhead video camera that looks down at the user's hands as they rest upon the desktop. Specialized processors analyze the image of the user's hands and locate the fingertips. Because KnowWare is an electronic medium, it is possible to instantly zoom in on a particular state or country to examine it in more detail. Similarly, panning and overlays are possible. Twenty blind subjects have tested KnowWare and have been able to use it as well as they do traditional raised-line maps.

Multifrequency and multiple factors are the specific features of electromagnetic pollution (EMP) of cities and towns. To measure EMP presents great difficulties. Geoinformation technologies are most suitable in monitoring electromagnetic exposures. The basic potentiality of using this techniques is shown.
This paper describes Mapping Variables, the principal technique for planning and constructing a test or rating instrument. A variable map is also useful for interpreting results. Modest reference is made to the history of mapping leading to its importance in psychometrics. Several maps are given to show the importance and value of mapping a variable by person and item data. The need for a critical appraisal of maps is also stressed.
This study used administrative data, census data, and geographic information system (GIS) technology to map and analyze the rates and distribution of child physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect at the neighborhood level in a suburban jurisdiction. The results provide an example of how administrative data, census data, and GIS technology can give child protective services and community-based agencies a visual tool to help identify and target neighborhoods in which children may be at high risk for maltreatment.

This article examines geographic variations in conceptions to women aged under 18. It presents data on conception rates and the percentage leading to abortion for the three countries of Great Britain, the Government Office Regions of England and local authorities within Great Britain. It provides an overview of variations between areas at each of the three geographic levels and examines whether this variation is associated with the social and demographic characteristics of local authority areas. This article is the first occasion on which conception rates for Scotland have been published on a comparable basis to England and Wales and also the first use of the revised ONS classification to examine conceptions to women aged under 18.

INTRODUCTION: Sustainable control of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa is jeopardized by dwindling public health resources resulting from competing health priorities that include an overwhelming acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic. In Mpumalanga province, South Africa, rational planning has historically been hampered by a case surveillance system for malaria that only provided estimates of risk at the magisterial district level (a subdivision of a province). METHODS: To better map control programme activities to their geographical location, the malaria notification system was overhauled and a geographical information system implemented. The introduction of a simplified notification form used only for malaria and a carefully monitored notification system provided the good quality data necessary to support an effective geographical information system. RESULTS: The geographical information system displays data on malaria cases at a village or town level and has proved valuable in stratifying malaria risk within those magisterial districts at highest risk, Barberton and Nkomazi. The conspicuous west-to-east gradient, in which the risk rises sharply towards the Mozambican border (relative risk = 4.12, 95% confidence interval = 3.88-4.46 when the malaria risk within 5 km of the border was compared with the remaining areas in these two districts), allowed development of a targeted approach to control. DISCUSSION: The geographical information system for malaria was enormously valuable in enabling malaria risk at town and village level to be shown. Matching malaria control measures to specific strata of endemic malaria has provided the opportunity for more efficient malaria control in Mpumalanga province.
