[Expression and significance of cyclooxygenase-2 in human pancreatic carcinomas].

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) reduced the incidence of gastrointestinal neoplasms with inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). This study was designed to investigate the expression and significance of COX-2 and the relationship between COX-2 and bcl-2 in human pancreatic carcinoma. METHODS: COX-2 and bcl-2 expression was determined with ABC immunohistochemical analysis in the samples of pancreatic carcinoma. RESULTS: COX-2 and bcl-2 proteins were found in 22 of 30 (73.3%) and 20 of 30 (66.7%) patients with pancreatic carcinoma, which were higher than those with pancreatic benign disease and normal pancreas, respectively (P< 0.05). There was positive correlation between the expression rates of COX-2 and bcl-2 in pancreatic carcinoma. The correlation coefficient was 0.470 (P< 0.01). There was no significant difference in expression rates of COX-2 in patients among age, sex, tumor location, tumor size, histological degree, and TNM staging (P >0.05). CONCLUSION: COX-2 protein is overexpressed in human pancreatic carcinoma. The co-expression of COX-2 and bcl-2 might play an important role in the regulation of apoptosis of pancreatic carcinoma cells.

[Palliative treatment of liver tumors].

Metastases of extrahepatic primaries are the most prevalent cause of malignant cells found in the liver. This overview is focusing on different regional and systemic palliative treatment modalities according to the histology of the primary tumor with special emphasis on metastastic colonic cancer. Furthermore indications and contraindications of the various treatment options are discussed.

[Immunohistochemical analysis of physicochemical properties of target antigens with anti-tumor monoclonal antibodies].

A new simplified assay for the identification of physicochemical nature of the antigen recognized by monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against tumor using direct immunohistochemical methods of avidin-biotin peroxidase complex (ABC) is first described. The experimental results demonstrate that this method does not need to purify the target antigens or special equipment, but is as specific and sensitive as immunoblotting technique. For these reasons, this procedure is much simpler and less expensive than the methods previously published. This method may thus be useful to investigate the properties of antigens to which MAbs are directed.

[Manifestations of local fibrosis in the clinical picture of carcinoids of digestive organs].

A complex of clinical, functional, and morphological studies was made in 20 patients aged 39 to 78 years who had histologically verified gastrointestinal carcinoids in the pre- and postoperative periods, by employing laboratory tests and instrumental techniques. Removed tumors were morphologically studied. Sixteen patients were operated on. Among them, 10 and 6 patients underwent planned and emergency operations, respectively. On referral for emergency laparotomy, the preoperative diagnoses were acute ileus in 2 cases, acute pancreatitis in 1, and acute appendicitis in 3. The local paracrine effect of serotonin on the intestinal wall leads to spasm and fibrosis, which manifests itself as the clinical picture of obstruction of a hollow organ or acute appendicitis. Cordlike or concentrated deformity as a kink is a characteristic sign of small intestinal carcinoid. Formation of fibrosis occurs not only in the pathways of evacuation of excess serotonin from hepatic metastases into the right ventricle of the heart (Hedinger's syndrome), but by the paracrine pathway in the immediate vicinity of a carcinoid tumor, in whatever organ the tumor is located.
