Corneal laceration and forehead erythema: a syndrome in infants.

PURPOSE: To illustrate a syndrome of transient erythema in the first division of the fifth cranial nerve caused by minor corneal laceration, occurring in infants. METHODS: Case reports are presented, together with photographs. These must, of necessity, usually be obtained by the general practitioner because of the short duration of the signs. RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS: Opinion is sought as to whether other practitioners have recognized this association and whether it has been described elsewhere.

Rejuvenation of the forehead and eyelid complex.

The goal of this article is to explain both the options and the techniques that are available when considering the rejuvenation of the eyelid and brow complex. We first explain the relevant anatomy. We then list and explain the different techniques with both the brow lift and the blepharoplasty. During this discussion we also explain a newer technique that we have been using. This combines the endoscopic technique with a trichophytic incision. The selection of patients is discussed in reference to which technique is appropriate given each patient's particular anatomy and desired effects. We also highlight the unique differences that the male patient presents.

Reliability of an infrared forehead skin thermometer for core temperature measurements.

The SensorTouch thermometer performs an infrared measurement of the skin temperature above the Superficial Temporal Artery (STA). This study evaluates the validity and the accuracy of the SensorTouch thermometer. Two experiments were performed in which the body temperature was measured with a rectal sensor, with an oesophageal sensor and with the SensorTouch. After entering a warm chamber the SensorTouch underestimated the core temperature during the first 10 minutes. After that, the SensorTouch was not significantly different from the core temperature, with an average difference of 0.5 degrees C (SD 0.5 degrees C) in the first study and 0.3 degrees C (SD 0.2 degrees C) in the second study. The largest differences between the SensorTouch and the core temperature existed 15 minutes after the start of the exercise. During this period the SensorTouch was significantly higher than the core temperature. The SensorTouch did not provide reliable values of the body temperature during periods of increasing body temperature, but the SensorTouch might work under stable conditions.

Surgical techniques for the removal of forehead hemangioma.

Hemangiomas of the bone are rare tumors, accounting for 0.5-1% of all benign skeletal tumors. Most of these tumors are found in the vertebral bodies and they are rarely seen in the cranial bones, where their frequency is 0.2% of all bone neoplasms. The authors, after reviewing the literature, describe their experience with a case of frontal bone hemangioma.

Surgical improvement of the aging forehead and eyelids.

Periocular reconstruction is limited to the upper lid, lower lid, and brow. Although many of the same principles apply as in other facial rejuvenation procedures, special techniques are involved frequently using microsurgical procedures. Although the majority of oculoplastic procedures are done for cosmetic purposes, occasionally patients with extreme distortion in periorbital anatomy may benefit from this procedure. These include patients with profound ptosis and severe cases of lower lid distortion who have visual compromise.
