[Intensity of parasitic contacts in the colonies of large gerbils under conditions of different population density of the animals and their fleas].

In the period from April to May and September to October of 1967--1973 in the Mujun-Kum a radioactive tracing of great gerbils was carried out. In all 225 tests were conducted. The greatest intensity of parasitic contacts between the animals was noted at their average quantity. Its further rise does not result in the increase of the parasitic relations. If the number of fleas is high the parasitic contacts level even at the relatively low number of great gerbils is usually high enough for a further passing of the plague microbe. If the number of both fleas and great gerbils is low the parasitic relations provide but not always an agent transmission.

A review of emerging flea-borne bacterial pathogens in New Zealand.

Recent studies have shown that Rickettsia typhi, R. felis, Bartonella henselae, and B. clarridgeiae occur in New Zealand. To raise awareness of these emerging and re-emerging flea-borne bacterial pathogens among New Zealand health workers, we review the clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of infections, and the biology of the major flea vectors.

Where have all the fleas gone? Low levels of Blue Tit Parus caeruleus nests infestation.

Prevalence of flea infestation in nests of Blue Tit Parus caeruleus was analyzed and compared with these of other hole-nesting birds. Nests were collected from nestboxes prior to youngs fledging. It was found that prevalence of fleas was very low in comparison to other studies of Blue Tits nests and to other bird species. The possible reasons of this low prevalence are discussed.

[New flea species in the fauna of the Crimean peninsula].

Two species of fleas, Spilopsyllus cuniculi Dale, 1878, and Stenoponia tripectinata tripectinata Tiraboschi, 1902, were reported in European rabbit and small rodents (common field mouse, yellow-necked field mouse, house mouse) respectively, of the Crimean peninsula. The finding of new for the fauna of the Crimea species of fleas demonstrates new changes in its fauna and enlarges the picture of the distribution area of these species, thus supplementing the available information on the ways of the fauna formation of the peninsular as a whole.

[Fleas from the nests of Passer domesticus and Passer montanus].

In the years 1986-1988 102 nests of Passer domesticus and 113 nests of P. montanus were collected from Słupsk, Warszawa and its surrounding. Ceratophyllus gallinae was found in 55 nests of P. domesticus and in 74 nests of P. montanus: C. fringillae in 13 nests of P. domesticus. The highest mean number of C. gallinae per nest was recorded in nest of P. domesticus (11.9), lower in nest of P. montanus (5.9). The highest percentage of nests with fleas and the highest mean number of fleas per nest were recorded in September in P. domesticus and in June, July and September in P. montanus. The highest (111) nests to be inhabited by 1-10 specimens. Number of specimens in nests was not depending on the weight nests.

[Enhanced blocking capacity of the plague microbe in the body of the flea].

During the stay of plague microbe in the organism of flea, under the effect of bactericidal factor increases its ability to form the block of proventriculus in these insects. Thus, in fleas infected on white mice, which were infected in a natural way through blocked individuals, the block of proventriculus appears 2 to 3 times as often (59.5 and 34.0%) as in insects (15.02%) infected on animals, which were infected artificially.

[Flea infestation establishment in the East German district of Rostock].

From sendings of citizens and own examinations 9 species of fleas were found out. Ctenocephalides felis was the most frequent species, followed by Ceratophyllus gallinae and Pulex irritans. Most of the sendings came from cities. Pests and flea control dominated in the months August to October.

[An attempt to search for the correlations between the indices of plague infectivity in small mammals and fleas].

On the basis of faunal analysis of 1.2 mln fleas collected from about 300,000 individuals belonging to 30 species of small mammals were obtained average indices of abundance and similarity between faunas of ectoparasites of different animals in a number of autonomous plague nidi of the Aral sea area. Their comparison with published earlier average data on the infection of mammals with plague has revealed notable statistical connections between these indices in all nidi under study. Thus, has been shown a leading role of transmission of plague microbe by fleas in the maintenance of natural nidality of this zoonosis. At the same time a new confirmation of the multiple-host nature of Middle Asian natural nidus of plague has been obtained.

[Faunistic analysis of the fleas on small mammals in the trans-Aral Sea area].

Materials on occurrence and abundance of 36 species of fleas on 17 species of small mammals are systematized. A great similarity between the faunas of ectoparasites of rodents and predators has been shown by means of special indices. The conception of parasitic field is formulated which implies the phenomenon of community of the fauna of plague vectors parasitic on its potential carriers. Some aspects of the formation of parasitic field and its possible effect the epizootic process are considered. It is established that the similarity between the faunas of fleas from different animals is ensured in this region first of all by a wide distribution of specific parasites of gerbils.

[The quantity of blood ingested by various species of fleas in an experiment].

Data are given on the blood amount engorged by the fleas Xenopsylla conformis, X. cheopis, Leptopsylla segnis, Nosopsyllus laeviceps, N. consimilis, Ctenophthalmus golovi, Neopsylla setosa, Citellophilus tesquorum and Coptopsylla lamellifer. The average weight of blood portion in females of different species engorged for the first time ranged from 0.05 mg (X. conformis) to 0.72 mg (C. lamellifer). Females of most species, which had multiple blood meals, engorge more blood. Males engorge less blood than females and blood portions do not increase with age. In all sex-age groups most ectoparasites cease feeding spontaneously after having incomplete blood meal. Indices are suggested for the estimation of saturation rate in fleas during feeding.

Systematics and evolution of the genus Paraceroglyphus and related taxa (Acari: Acaridae) associated with fleas (Insecta: Siphonaptera).

Collections of fleas from terrestrial Sciuridae from New Mexico and Montana yielded 2 species of acarid mites: Acarus monopsyllus from Ceratophyllus ciliatus and Paraceroglyphus cynomydis n. sp. from 4 species of Oropsylla. The genera Acarus, Paraceroglyphus, and Trichopsyllopus form a clade distinct from other genera of flea-associated mites, with Paraceroglyphus the sister group of the other 2 genera. Paraceroglyphus cynomydis is the sister group of a clade comprising P. xenopsylla and possibly P. californicus, with P. meles as the nearest outgroup.

[Efficiency of Neopsylla abagaitui fleas as plague vectors in Transbaikalia].

Experiments have shown that the block of proventriculus develops in 1.1 to 1.5% of individuals of the flea Neopsylla abagaitui infected with plague microbe. These insects transmit the agent during bloodsucking to different plague carriers (Citellus dauricus, C. undulatus, Meriones unguiculatus, Microtus gregalis). The plague microbe is preserved in fleas for 65 days (the observation period).
