Time trends of mortality from digestive cancers in Italy during the period 1970-1989 were here studied either at the national level and for wide geographical areas (North, Center and South). Cancers of oral cavity and pharynx, of colon and rectum, of gallbladder and of the pancreas presented, during the considered period a generalized increasing trend. Stomach cancer mortality was decreasing in both sexes and in all areas, but a less marked rate of decrease appeared for younger cohorts, particularly for women. Trends almost stable, or contrasting across sexes and age classes, were observed for malignant tumours of the oesophagus and of the liver.

In 45 patients with chronic digestive tract diseases (gastric and/or duodenal peptic ulcer, cholecystolithiasis, conditions after gastrectomy and cholecystectomy) the biochemical parameters serving as indicators of the nutritional status of the organism (Hb, Bc, Fe, Ca, alkaline phosphatase) were determined. In the group with postgastrectomy syndrome the serum calcium level was decreased. The other parameters were normal in all groups of patients.
A study of 374 patients with ulcer disease, chronic gastroduodenitis and esophagitis allowed to distinguish three clinico-endoscopic syndromes (erosive-ulcerative, irritated pylorus, regurgitating syndromes). Therapeutic endoscopic manipulations were carried out: transesophageal block of the vagal nerve, pricking of the ulcer with trimecaine, solkoseryl, oxyferriscorbone, trental and laser treatment. The results were favourable.
Over 35,000 tonnes of food waste are generated from high concentration point sources (i.e., restaurants, hospitals and markets) in metropolitan Adelaide (Australia) each year. Anaerobic digestion is a preferred method of treatment to degrade highly putrescible waste streams such as food waste due its high methane potential. To maximise methane yield, a sequential batch anaerobic system was chosen as the most appropriate system. Two sets of sequential batch systems consisting of mature and start-up reactors in triplicate exchanged leachate. One set exchanged twice as much leachate by volume as the other set to determine the effects of different leachate exchange volumes. Results show that by increasing the leachate volume between mature and start-up reactors, the time to degrade feedstock decreases, but total methane generation yields did not markedly differ, being 229LCH4 kg(-1) VSadded and 214LCH4 kg(-1) VSadded. Process parameters used to determine when to cease leachate exchange in start-up reactors were a pH of 6.5 and methane generation rate of >0.5LCH4 kg(-1) VSadded day(-1). Changes in carbon dioxide and methane biogas composition in the mature reactors reflected process stress caused by the addition of leachate with high VFA concentrations from the start-up reactors and indicate there may be limits to leachate exchange rates and subsequent loading of mature reactors.
OBJECTIVE: A ten year prolective and multicentre study of cancer of the Digestive Tract aims to evaluate the variations on frequency and to identify risk factors. METHODS: Ten hospitals are participating five in Mexico City and five in other states. Data were obtained through the hospitals files and specially designed questionnaires, the latter mainly diet and habits oriented. RESULTS: Through this ten years in the 4,715 cases studied we can appreciate a decreasing tendency of the carcinoma of the stomach (GC) that has been the most frequent until 1984 in the general group General Hospital and Instituto Nacional de la Nutrición. Since then and up to date, first place in frequency in shared between the stomach and colorectal carcinoma (CRC). CRC has been increasing even in the General Hospital in which GC was very high. Eighth years ago we found that people in those hospitals in which GC was high the diet was poor in proteins, fat A and C vitamin. People in those hospitals with high frequency of CRC had diet high in protein, fat and low in fiber. A new study on diet is ongoing. Gallbladder and biliary tract carcinoma has been increasing in all the hospitals. A high O blood group was found in the Juarez Hospital in which gallbladder carcinoma was the highest. O group is highest in the indian people. Cancer of the gallbladder is very high in Pimas and Navajos indians. A plan to study litogenic index and culture of salmonella is going to be practiced in bile from normal and gallbladder carcinoma. Concerning habits, tobacco and alcohol consumption are most frequent in cancer of the esophagus and pancreas. Also coffee consumption is high in the latter. CONCLUSIONS: Along this 10-year study, the frequency of gastric cancer has been decreasing. Instead, the frequencies of colo rectal and biliary tract cancers have been increasing. Variations in frequencies correlated with the composition of the diet, fiber consumption habits and racial characteristics of the different groups.
The histopathological study of the digestive mucosae has a great diagnostic value. It appreciates lymphoid tissue; it may suggest AIDS when it discloses rare inflammatory or tumoral lesions; it may disclose an infectious and/or Kaposi sarcoma lesion which may be the first manifestation of AIDS in a seropositive LAV patient or may be an additional lesion in a patient known to have AIDS. The autopsies have shown the spread of the extension and the evolution of these lesions. The discussion of the histopathological lesions must always include the extra-digestive localisations as well as the "non opportunistic" associated infections.
