[Visual fatigue as an occupational pathology problem in ophthalmology].

A study of incidence and peculiarities of visual fatigue in workers of visually strained, in particular, precision labour (about two thousand subjects) has shown a connection between visual fatigue and the character and conditions of work. This allows to consider visual fatigue from positions of professional pathology. The attention is drawn to necessity to consider results of scientific researches in the field of industrial ophthalmology, ophthalmological ergonomics and professional pathology of the eye as well as in their further active development.

[The results of research on visual fatigue in children by determining the perception time of a sequential color contrast].

The paper analyses results after a study of visual fatigue by means of determining the perception time of a color successive contrast in children, aged from 10 to 13 years, before and after intensive dosed visual load. The revealed high percentage of visual fatigue in children (40.4-52.5%) is likely to be connected with the fact that the study was made in spring time when signs and body asthenization, avitaminosis are expressed. It was found that perception of a color successive contrast in children with eye myopization is shorter as compared with children with stably normal visual acuity.

[Usefulness of selected psychophysical methods in the evaluation of lighting conditions].

The author examined the frequency of blinking and the position of the near point influenced by practicing a work of considerable visual requirements in various conditions of illumination. It was established that a 7-hours work causes an increase in the frequency of blinking in all the examined persons and receding of the near point in 93 p.c. of subjects. Calculated was the coefficient of correlation and the tangent of the inclination angle of the extent of changes of the measured functions from the logarithm of intensity of the illumination on the work stand. The received coefficients of correlation were -0.08 in case of changes of the near point and -0.63 for the changes of blinking frequency; instead the tangent of inclination angle respectively -0.41 and -122.

[Interocular accommodative disparities: asymmetry and/or paresis?].

Description of interocular accommodative disparities about 3 cases of young patients, whose occupations require an excellent stereopsis in near vision. Is is a paresis, an asynergy or a constitutional asymmetry? In order to delimit this pathology, the accommodative power of each eye has been measured on a reference population including 100 subjects aged 20 to 35 years. The suitable correction of this anomaly, allows an exact compensation and the recovery of a normal functional comfort.

Computer eyestrain.

Main ocular mechanisms probably underlying eyestrain symptoms in computer users-diminished aqueous tears, extraocular muscle fatigue, color fatigue and decreased amplitude of accommodation induced by monochromatic light--are discussed. With this background, some practical consequences are drawn to avoid or reduce eyestrain.

[Hygienic substantiation of the system of education based on information science and technology in senior classes using computers].

The conducted studies showed that the degree of fatigue of the 10-grade students at the lessons on the basics of information science and computing technology was determined by the duration of work with video terminals. Thus, the general length of work with displays in the IIId class should be limited by 30 min: 20 min at the beginning of the lesson and then 10 min later the complex of physical exercises for general and visual fatigue unloading. More prolonged with displays resulted in deterioration of students'++ body functional state and decrease of their work capacity.

[Working at video display terminals].

With the introduction of VDU work the frequency of various health problems increased proportionally to an increase in work hours on VDU's. Today the frequency of health problems is still greater, than it is for traditional office work. The observed symptoms are mostly stress reactions of multifunctional cause. Only with a close collaboration of workphysiology oriented physicians and VDU users, using the principles of workphysiology and ergonomics, can a satisfactory solution be reached.

Effects of ocular functioning and time upon reading proficiency.

We hypothesize that children with fusional and/or accommodative abnormalities will tend to tire more readily when reading than will children with normal vision and that, consequently, they will show a greater decrement in reading proficiency over time on a task requiring reading. Forty-five subjects who passed the New York State Optometric Association Vision Screening Battery and 32 who failed were given a "maze" reading test developed for the study. The abnormal vision group made significantly more errors than did the normal vision group on the reading test. The abnormal vision group also made progressively more errors than did the normal vision group at the end of each segment of the reading test. The differences, however, were not statistically significant. While the correlations between speed and accuracy reversed over time, the abnormal vision group began and ended at the most extreme levels, having undergone a significantly more radical shift in this regard.

[Hygienic electrooculographic evaluation of working conditions of school children using a computer].

The technique for the electrooculographic analysis of the visual system of schoolchildren working with computers is described. The strain of the oculomotor system and fatigue manifestation have been detected in children under unfavourable environmental conditions. It is recommended to use the derived indicators of evaluating electrooculograms when hygienically assessing the working conditions of schoolchildren using computers.

[Hygienic evaluation of artificial lighting in the classroom for studying information science and computer technics in secondary schools].

Body functioning state of schoolchildren was investigated under different lighting conditions of the computer keyboard and video display terminals (VDT). The findings of lighting engineering and physiologic studies showed that optimal conditions for the children working on computers should be ensured by two interdependent indicators, i. e., the level of lighting at the workplace and on VDT. The most favourable indicators of children's visual functions were established at the level of lighting of 400 lx at the workplace and 100 lx on VDT under general luminescent lighting.
