Establishing standards for health care archives: a case study of the Calgary Regional Health Authority.

Due to recent restructuring of Alberta's health care system, many historically valuable records are at risk. However, Freedom and Information and Protection of Privacy legislation has created awareness of the need to care for both administrative and medical records of health care institutions, and standards for the maintenance of these records are evolving. The Calgary Regional Health Authority has established archives, records management, and access and privacy programs, and now has the opportunity to establish a serious medical research repository. The CRHA's experience proves the feasibility of preserving historical health care records for both medical and historical use.

Data extraction and archiving for nursing research using a bedside clinical information system.

Institution wide use of an intensive care bedside information system creates the opportunity to make available vast amounts of clinical data to support research and quality improvement activities. Acting on this opportunity has required the development of several innovative approaches to transform this raw data into usable information. The process described herein uses commercially available software and hardware tools to extract on a daily basis, process and archive data for 7 intensive care units. Once this procedure is complete, attention is turned to using individual and combinations of data elements to build a higher level of information that more directly relates to the kinds of inquiries that help to address questions of outcome, and care quality.

The use of the thematic apperception test in the study of Native American psychological characteristics: a review and archival study of Navaho men.

The present study was designed as a "snapshot in time"--an archival analysis of the psychological characteristics of four Navaho men taken from Navaho Veterans--A Study of Changing Values (E. Z. Vogt, 1951). From a sample of 15 men, Vogt judged 2 as "most acculturated" and 2 as "most unacculturated." The present study was an attempt to examine the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) protocols of these men on the basis of any recurring and psychologically significant thematic patterns, shared and unshared by the "acculturated" and "unacculturated" subjects. Vogt administered cards from the original TAT set created by H. A. Murray (1943). In this article, a section concerning the definitional use of the term acculturation is provided, followed by a discussion of the limitations inherent in the analysis of TAT protocols. A general survey of psychological and cultural studies of Native Americans using the TAT or TAT modifications is also provided. The examination of the protocol sets resulted in the identification of four themes or approaches to the TAT cards that were thought to be most pervasive and significant across both levels of acculturation: economic deprivation and physical suffering, loneliness/isolation, interpersonal conflict/violence, and individualistic vs. familial orientations. These themes and approaches are illustrated with quotations from the original protocols and are later summarized as the first four categories of a table comparing the psychological characteristics of the most acculturated men with the most unacculturated men. Results of the thematic analyses are discussed within the framework of economic and social pressures traditionally experienced by Native Americans.

[Grassi's archives of the museum of comparative anatomy of Rome University "La Sapienza"].

The documents, reprints, books, correspondence of Grassi, found in his room at the University of Rome when he died, have been kept in the Institute of Comparative Anatomy, directed by Grassi himself from 1896 until 1925. This fund keeps documents concerning the whole life of the scientist, with a special reference to the Roman period. Numerous are the documents concerning his malariological studies between 1898 and 1910. A first reconaissance has been made in 1980 and then, twice in 1994 and 1998, the fund has been reorganized and an inventory of it has been made. It is collected in 48 boxes containing archivistic documents, 11 boxes of reprints and other publications. The inventory of archival documents has been computerized.

[Sources for the history of malaria in the historical archives of the Accademia Dei XL and the Accademia Dei Lincei].

A research has been performed in the Historical Archives of the Accademia dei XL and the Accademia dei Lincei, to verify the presence of documentary sources concerning the activity of some malariologists members of the above mentioned institutions. During the search, the Authors found out an envelope sealed out by Giovan Battista Grassi in 1925. At the moment, it is not possible to specify what kind of material the envelope keeps, because of the necessity to wait the deliberation of the classes, and consequently the beginning of the Academic courses.

[The fate of graduates of the Medical Cadet Officers School, the first nine graduating classes (1922-2001): based on the archives of Dr Roman Jakubski].

In 1922 a Military Medical School was set up in Warsaw. Following several reorganisations from 1928 it was known as the Medical Cadet Officers' School. This academy trained physicians, pharmacists and dentists for the needs of the Armed Forces. Professional studies were conducted at the Medical or Pharmacy Faculty of Warsaw University. By 1939, 17 incoming classes had been admitted, amounting to 903 students all told. Diplomas and officer's ranks were awarded to 462 graduates. Another 99 senior students were made officers on the eve of the war. The school ceased to exist the moment World War Two broke out. The subject of this article is the fate of graduates of the Medical Cadet Officers School (admitted from 1922 to 1930) who completed their studies in the first nine graduating classes, spent the war in Poland or returned home after the war. It is based on an analysis of archival materials gathered by the late Dr Roman Jakubski in London, who died in 2000. In 1998, he donated his collections to the Main Medical Library in Warsaw. Many graduates of the Medical Cadet Officers School survived the war, and about 26% of them perished. Many of the latter were murdered by Stalin's NKVD (security police) in Katyn and Kharkov, whilst the remainder died at the hands of the Germans while fighting on all the fronts of World War Two. The overwhelming majority of graduates of the school's first nine graduating classes proved through their often complicated biographies that their Alma Mata had played an important role in their lives. It produced many well-trained and at times superbly skilled military physicians. Some of them went on to become outstanding specialists in various fields of medicine and pharmacy. Most of them courageously defended their homeland during the Second War World, providing to be distinguished officers ready to risk their lives when the situation waranted.

A quantitative evaluation of cytophotometric DNA analysis in retrospective studies using archival tumor specimens.

Methods developed for the cytophotometric analysis of archival tumor specimens used in retrospective studies were evaluated quantitatively. May-Grünwald-Giemsa-stained cytologic slides up to 20 years old could be restained by the Feulgen reaction with excellent results if they were destained in methanol and refixed in formaldehyde prior to Feulgen staining. Storage time had only a minor influence on Feulgen stainability. However, a considerable variation in the intensity of the Feulgen stain was observed between different slides stained simultaneously; this variation was not related to storage time. As a consequence of this variation, the use of internal staining controls, such as granulocytes, is an absolute necessity in the quantitative comparison of different slides. By expressing DNA data from the tumor cells in relative values (c values) related to the internal staining control (with a defined mean value of 2c), Feulgen ploidy level determinations could be made as accurately from measurements on old, destained slides as on cells obtained from fresh tumor material. The ploidy level could also be accurately determined in most cases of prostatic carcinoma from measurements on histopathologic sections.

[Problems in archiving psychiatric patient records].

Not only is there a mandatory regulation that case notes no longer required are to be deposited in the care and supervision of state archives but also it is--in principle and with regard to data protection--desirable that such case notes should be preserved and utilized under specialist guidance. There is a general accord that case notes collected up to 1945 should be recorded without exception. On the one hand, this material is unique in medico-historical research interest: on the other, it has to be secured for descendants of NS victims on moral, humanitarian and legal grounds. Archivists, however, refuse a complete recording of case notes after 1945 for personnel, technical and financial reasons. A number of different selection modes are discussed. Taking into account all the arguments, a complete recording of case notes in selected catchment areas seems the most efficient solution today.

[Text, archiving, coding--integration with electronic data processing].

For a successful computer-installation in the medical area you need a staff, which is used to work with computers in the daily routine. We tried with this project to establish the computer in a medical office by doing the whole patient-related writings on a specially tailored software. Most of the daily routine can now be done with the help of the computer. A certain time-saving effect could be achieved, although this was not our first aim. On this base we are now able to solve other problems such as coding, statistics or archiving routines by using our established computer environment.
