[Study on the application of the Chinese version of SF-36 scales and selection of interceptive cents for its grade range].

OBJECTIVE: To study the possibility of measuring quality of life by Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey scale and to subdivide grade range of Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-From Health Survey (SF-36) total cents through a Quality of Life questionnaire among the elderly Chinese. METHODS: The quality of life of the 167 elderly Chinese in Suzhou was measured simultaneously by SF-36 and the Quality of Life questionnaire developed by Epidemiology Group of Geriatric Medicine Committee of China for the elderly. Validity and reliability were analyzed and subdivided the grade range of SF-36 total scores by Quality of Life questionnaire for the Chinese elderly. RESULTS: Eight common factors from factorial analysis were in accordance with their theoretical structure, and the cumulative contribution rates of the Quality of Life questionnaire for the elderly and SF-36 were 74.244% and 72.081%. The split-half reliability of the Quality of Life questionnaire for the elderly was 0.6676. The split-half reliability of SF-36 was 0.9384. In SF-36, the Cronbach's alpha coefficient of internal consistency reliability ranged from 0.81 to 0.89, which was satisfactory for group comparison except 0.63 for the social functioning and 0.42 for mental health scale and 0.69 for vitality scale. The Quality of Life questionnaire for old people seemed to have good validity and reliability but the SF-36 was better. The cent of the furthest truncation between the good quality of life and the medium one in the SF-36 was 117 with a Kappa value of 0.58. CONCLUSION: The SF-36 scale could be used for measuring and evaluating the quality of life for the Chinese elderly. The cent of the furthest truncation could provide reference to judge the level of the quality of life of the elderly.

A comparative study on methods of measuring mesiodistal tooth diameters for interceptive orthodontic space analysis.

AIM: This study was designed to find the most reliable method of measurement of mesiodistal tooth diameter. METHODS: Measurements were made of all erupted permanent teeth of 14 orthodontic study casts. These measurements were made directly by using A) a digital calliper, B) measuring photocopies of casts with a calliper, C) a Magiscan Image Analysis using a photocopy of the casts. Measurements derived from the two methods were compared by statistical analysis. RESULTS: These showed that the electronic digital calliper was the most reliable method of measuring mesiodistal tooth diameter using dental study casts. The measurement of photocopies was unreliable and the image analysis method had a too high error factor.

Amelogenesis imperfecta: early interception to prevent attrition.

Early recognition and action are essential elements in the management of amelogenesis imperfecta. The authors describe how a combination of prompt clinical action and preventive care were used to minimize the chances of decay and wear to the permanent dentition of a young patient suffering from this condition.

Modulation of resynthesis of 1-alkyl-2-arachidonyl-glycero-3-phosphocholine and phosphatidylinositols for interception in vivo of free arachidonic acid, lyso-PAF, diacyl-glycerols, and phosphoinositides.

Thermal injury causes directly a liberation of inositolphosphates, diacylglycerols, free arachidonic acid, and lyso PAF from eukaryotic cells. From lyso PAF derivates PAF, from free arachidonic acid are derivating PG, LT, and TX. These "soluble mediators" are stimulating inflammatory cell populations in a feedback mechanism: the stimulus activates the inflammatory cells to produce the same soluble mediators (Fig.1). The arising soluble mediators are the take off for the inflammation cascade causing as later step the activation of kinin, clotting, and complement systems. The pure biochemical lesions at the onset results in the clinical manifestation of oedema, increased dermal temperature, and pains. The possibilities for prevention and allevation of early pain, due to the acute burn, lie in the inhibition of the spreading out of inflammatory mediators (Bauer 1987a) (Fig.2).

Development of novel embryotoxic compounds for interceptive fertility control in the dog.

Studies in pregnant rats, hamsters and guinea-pigs with a series of 2-phenyltriazole isoindoles and isoquinolines and related compounds have demonstrated that these agents are potent abortifacients. These compounds were very effective when administered around the time of implantation and less effective even at higher doses when administered several days before or after implantation. Most of the members of these series of compounds are effective with a single injection although the dosage can be 5 or more times as large as that needed for each of 5 daily injections. The least soluble compounds, L-14105 and L-12717 (Lotrifen), have the longest duration due to slow clearance from the injection site and were the most potent abortifacients. Experiments in beagle and mongrel dogs treated with L-10492, L-10503, L-11204 and Lotrifen during various stages of gestation indicated that all were most efficacious when administered around Day 20 of pregnancy. Lotrifen was the most potent. High abortifacient potency and slow release from the injection depot permitted treatment of bitches during any of the first 15 days after mating with a dosage low enough to reduce unwanted side effects to acceptable levels. Toxic manifestations in all species generally were related to the gastrointestinal tract and consisted of reduced feeding, anorexia and loss in body weight, vomiting by non-rodents, congestion of the intestines and in some animals there was blood loss from this tract. The mechanism of activity has not been defined, but the abortifacient activity is primarily limited to the early post-implantation period.

Effects of interception of snout sensory input on murine neck muscles: an electron microscopic study.

To examine whether the interference of the snout sensory input causes neuromuscular dysfunction in the murine neck muscles, the fine structure of the dorsal neck muscles was studied by electron microscopy. The infraorbital nerves were bilaterally transected in the adult ICR mice (one-month-old), and the animals were sacrificed after postoperative periods ranging from six to 18 months. Alpha motor end-plates showed remarkable changes characterized by shrunken synaptic boutons containing abundant lysosomes and/or disappearance of the synaptic boutons. The changes in the muscle spindles were characterized by the sarcolemmal undulation of the intrafusal muscle fibers and the frequent appearance of lysosomes in their sensory terminals. These degenerative changes were observed between nine months and 18 months after neurotomy and intensified with the length of the postoperative period. From the results of the present study, it was concluded that a reflex pathway exists between the snout receptor organs and the dorsal neck muscles.
