Marital status differentials in rural to city migration in India.

Following the comparative method of analysis, this paper examines the marital status characteristics of rural to urban migrants in 3 Indian states-Biharm West Bengal, and Kerala. The discussion is based on the Census of India, 1971. The main thrust of this paper is that as these 3 states tend to differ markedly in terms of the social and cultural value system, the marital status characteristics of migrants also differ between states. Important findings emerging from this study are as follows. 1) Singles are more migratory than marrieds where singles are more likely to be males than females. 2) Similarly married females are greater migrants than married males. 3) However, these differences by sex are much less marked in Kerala than in Bihar and West Bengal. Married migrants tend to migrate alone rather than with their family in Bihar and West Bengal, while in Kerala family migration is more common than individual migration.

On the industrialization of small towns in Pakistan.

"Migration to large metropolitan cities in Pakistan from rural areas and small towns has put enormous pressure on those cities and created many socio-economic and demographic problems. This article suggests that, in conjunction with other steps, many smaller towns should be developed and industrialized to ease the pressure on the larger cities, as has been done in other areas of the world."

New trends and problems in urbanization: a survey of farmers who moved into townships in the Shanghai suburbs.

Results are presented from a survey conducted in China to evaluate 1984 changes in a rural migration policy. "To reflect the new trends and problems of the urbanization of the rural population in Shanghai suburbs in the light of the policy, the Institute of Population Studies of East China Normal University conducted a sampling survey, in early 1989, of the farmers who had moved into townships in the Shanghai suburbs in recent years. From the seven townships selected, a total of 1,057 samples were obtained, representing 17.0% of the total number of farmers who had moved into the townships."

[Migratory strategies in the overpopulated Nile Delta region].

The author describes cyclical migration from the densely populated Nile Delta region of Egypt during the 1970s. The trend toward this type of migration emerged as a strategy for coping with a lack of local resources without having to permanently migrate to an urban environment. She concludes that "while emigration [to] the Gulf countries helped greatly in this process...cyclical migration towards the towns brought about a longer-term strategy. It furthered the survival of most agricultural developments and encouraged the expansion of a more and more urbanised social strata." (SUMMARY IN ENG AND SPA)
