[Human rights and procreation].

The impact of procreation on freedom, health and welfare of human beings, is considerable. This relationship, however, is not mirrored in texts devoted to Human Rights. This omission obviously implies a neglect of women's and children's rights. The history of anticonceptive methods exemplifies the struggle for these rights. This conquest, which has lasted two hundred years, is far from completed. Because of the demographic outbreak in Third World countries, an ideological conflict has appeared between first generation Human Rights concerned with individual freedom ("rights of") and those of second generation aiming at social fairness ("rights to"). Adequate political and economic adjustment between North and South is a prerequisite to any balanced compromise that would resolve this conflict through democratic, albeit intensive, birth control.

Contraception↗

Health economics in developing countries.

The interpretation of health economics chosen for this paper is broad. It includes the relation between economic and other factors in health development. This interpretation has been chosen lest the acceptance of a disciplinary approach in the commissioning of papers should have the unintended effect of excluding some key areas of research which require the consideration of crucial interrelationships between disciplines. The only justification for covering this area in a paper on economics rather than, for example, epidemiology is that increasingly there is and indeed has to be a heavy focus on costs in considering alternative paths to health development. The word 'research' is loosely interpreted and not restricted to the type of activity which could lead to the award of a PhD. The compilation of experience in many areas is, in the view of the author, a priority need, to plan where further research and experiment is needed.

A new look at traditional medicine in Morocco.

Traditional medicine is still popular in Morocco since it is an important form of health care for many people. Its positive aspects could be encouraged if it were officially recognized and given a place in the health system.

Attitude to Health↗

Training for primary health care.

New courses in health services studies have been launched at Helsinki University. They offer undergraduates a chance to study this subject to degree and doctoral standards without previous medical training of any kind.

The road to health.

This article is published as a tribute to Professor Thomas McKeown, the eminent epidemiologist, who died in 1988 aged 75. In it the author urges that the spread of services comprising primary health care be arranged in strict order of priority. Since improvements in nutrition have a particularly profound effect on health they should be the primary aim of developing countries.

Communicable Disease Control↗

New needs in health management.

National health development policies demand the building of operational and management capacities. A WHO study has identified key requirements in these areas and has found that few countries are in a position to meet them.

Delivery of Health Care↗

Towards the measurement of community participation.

A description is given of the initial stages in the development of a methodology for assessing community participation in health schemes. A study in Nepal indicates that the approach adopted will be useful to planners who wish to evaluate involvement in primary care programmes.
