How many Samoans? An evaluation of the 1980 census count of Samoans in the United States.

"This paper reports the results of applying demographic methods, in combination with assumptions about vital rates and migration, to estimate the total Samoan population of the United States in 1980." The authors conclude that the most plausible estimate of the Samoan population in the United States in 1980 is between 46,600 and 50,800. These estimates are 10 to 17.5 percent higher than the census count.

[Simulation of possible developments in urbanization in the German Democratic Republic by the use of a multi-regional population model].

An attempt is made to forecast likely trends in urbanization in the German Democratic Republic over the next 50 years using the multi-regional approach developed at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Laxenburg, Austria. "Three scenarios describe possible variants in the changes of fertility, mortality and interregional migration as demographic factors. The term 'region' is applied to 4 sizes of communities each grouped as rural communities, small towns, small medium-size towns, and large medium-size towns/large towns. The results of the simulation indicate for all three scenarios an absolute and relative decline in population of the rural communities and a continuation of the process of concentration among the population." Population geography of calamity: the sixteenth and seventeenth century Yucatan.

"This historical demography for Yucatan [Mexico] at the time of Spanish contact presents a number of problems. There were multiple Maya-Spaniard contacts before the Spaniards established a continuous presence after the protracted conquest of the Yucatan. The area of Yucatan that was controlled by the Spanish at any one time is not precisely known, and Yucatan offered ¿refuge' areas where the indigenous population could avoid Spanish control and counts. These issues are addressed here by considering different regions of the Yucatan and using a numerical computer simulation to generate new estimates of population that result from migration, warfare, agricultural calamity, and epidemics."

Population of Turkey by ethnic groups and provinces.

"The principal objective of this paper...is to estimate the number of Kurds in Turkey and their spatial distribution.... The ethnically Kurdish component of the population has increased from 3.132 million in 1965 to 7.046 million in 1990. This very substantial increase has been due to high fertility, which is a characteristic of agrarian or recently agrarian societies...,coupled with falling mortality, a typical case of demographic transition.... Perhaps more importantly, the massive population movements during the last two decades have spatially redistributed the Kurds."
