Crystal structure, Judd-Ofelt analysis, and spectroscopic assessment of a TmAl3(BO3)4 crystal as a new potential diode-pumped laser near 1.9 micron.

TmAl3(BO3)4 crystallizes in the trigonal system R32 (No. 155) with a = b = 9.2741(13) A, c = 7.218(3) A, alpha = beta = 90 degrees , gamma = 120 degrees , V = 537.7(2) A(3), D(c) = 4.494 g cm(-3), and Z = 3. The absorption spectrum of this crystal was recorded at room temperature. The Judd-Ofelt (J-O) theory was applied to the absorption intensities of TmAl(3)(BO3)4 to obtain the three J-O parameters: Omega(2) = 2.40 x 10(-20) cm(2), Omega(4) = 0.48 x 10(-20) cm(2), and Omega(6) = 1.09 x 10(-20) cm(2). The radiative probabilities, radiative lifetimes, and branching ratios of TmAl3(BO3)4 were calculated. The absorption and emission cross sections, together with the potential laser gain near 1.9 microm, were investigated. The potential laser gain curves indicate that the tunability range is about 200 nm.

A convenient route to synthesize the fully conjugated bimetallic complex (Bu4N)2[tto[Ni(dmit)2]] (tto = tetrathiooxalate, C2S4(2-), and dmit = 1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate, C3S5(2-) and the crystal structure of a new crystal form.

A novel route for the conversion of (Bu4N)2[Ni(dmit)2] to (Bu4N)2[tto[Ni(dmit)2]] is reported here. This provides a much more efficient way of synthesizing (Bu4N)2[tto[Ni(dmit)2]] than the literature method. During the process, the conversion of dmit2- to tto2- was realized for the first time. This new synthesis should facilitate further research on the conducting bimetallic complexes [C]x[tto[Ni(dmit)2]]. In addition, a new crystal form of (Bu4N)2[tto[Ni(dmit)2]]. In addition, a new crystal form of (Bu4N)2[tto[Ni(dmit)2]] was determined by X-ray crystallographic analysis.

Growth of Sr6Rh5O15 single crystals from high-temperature solutions: structure determination using the traditional 3-D and the 4-D superspace group methods and magnetic measurements on oriented single crystals.

Single crystals of Sr6Rh5O15 were grown from a molten potassium carbonate flux. The structure was solved by both the traditional 3-D crystallographic approach and the 4-D superspace group approach using JANA2000. Both methods produced an equivalent structure determination, thereby confirming the 4-D superspace group approach as an effective structure solution method for 3-D commensurate composite structures. Sr6Rh5O15 corresponds to the n = 1, m = 1 member of the A3n+3mA'nB3m+nO9m+6n family of 2H hexagonal perovskite-related oxides. This compound is characterized by pseudo-one-dimensional polyhedral chains of four face-sharing RhO6 octahedra followed by one RhO6 trigonal prism. These chains in turn are separated by [Sr](infinity) chains. Magnetic measurements were carried out on oriented single crystals, and a very large magnetic anisotropy in the magnetic susceptibility was observed.

Effect of solvation on induce-fit molecular recognition in supercritical fluid to organic crystals immobilized on a quartz crystal microbalance.

The inclusion behavior of guest molecules to a solid apohost of an orthogonal anthracene-bis(resorcinol)tetraol (1) was investigated in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)) by using a 9 MHz quartz-crystal microbalance (QCM). Compound 1 forms crystals composed of molecular-sheet bound together by an extensive hydrogen-bonded network. The selective binding of gaseous ethyl acetate to the apohost-immobilized QCM in scCO(2) was observed, and the inclusion amount of ethyl acetate showed a drastic increase above a threshold concentration, [Guest](th) = 0.08 M, and the apparent Gibbs' free energy for the binding was DeltaG(app) = -1.3 kcal mol(-1). Similar selective bindings of ethyl acetate or ethanol had been observed in the gas phase and in water: [Guest](th) = 0.002 M with DeltaG(app) = -3.5 kcal mol(-1) and [Guest](th) = 0.5 M with DeltaG(app) = -0.41 kcal mol(-1), respectively. These values obtained in scCO(2) were intermediate between those in the gas and water phases. Since various physical properties (viscosity, density, polarity, diffusion constant, and solvation) of supercritical fluid are known to be intermediate between gas and liquid, these values clearly reflect the solvation behavior of guest molecules. Thus, the lower solvation of guest molecules indicates the lower threshold concentration and the larger binding energy in the following order: in air > in scCO(2) > in water.

Single-crystal-to-single-crystal topochemical polymerizations of a terminal diacetylene: two remarkable transformations give the same conjugated polymer.

Host-guest chemistry was used to prepare a cocrystal of a dipyridyl substituted oxalamide host and a resorcinol derivative of a terminal diacetylene. X-ray crystallography revealed that the molecules assemble into a triple-helix with the diacetylene functionalities aligned in the center of the helix. Upon heating, the diacetylenes polymerize to give the corresponding polymer. In a second experiment, the X-ray structure of the crystalline hydrate of the same diacetylene also showed a suitable alignment of the diacetylene functionalities. These crystals polymerize at only 50 degrees C with the C1 carbon end of the diacetylene undergoing an unprecedented 2.4 A inward swinging movement. This results in a remarkable 9% increase in crystal density. These are the first structurally characterized polymerizations of any terminal diacetylene. A detailed comparison of the two sets of structural changes offers an interesting insight into the precise trajectories of polymerization reactions.

Tunable photonic band gap crystals based on a liquid crystal-infiltrated inverse opal structure.

Composite materials comprised of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) and SiO(2) inverse opal films were fabricated. Their optical properties were quite different from those of inverse opal films without the LCs. The optical properties could be controlled by changing the refractive indices of the LCs, which vary with orientation, phase, and temperature. In particular, the optical properties were drastically changed by thermal or photoinduced isothermal phase transitions of the LCs. This means that the photonic band structure could be controlled, and tunable photonic crystals have been achieved, based on the inverse opal structure. The mechanism of this change was investigated by the evaluation of the effective refractive indices. As a result, it was found that the change in optical properties was derived from the orientation of the LC molecules in the voids in the inverse opal film. Furthermore, once the mechanism was understood, it was also possible to control the position of the reflection peak by changing the alignment of the LCs. Such materials have the possibility for practical use in optical devices and fundamental research systems.

Green chemistry strategies using crystal-to-crystal photoreactions: stereoselective synthesis and decarbonylation of trans-alpha,alpha'-dialkenoylcyclohexanones.

This paper describes steps to develop green chemistry strategies to prepare compounds with adjacent quaternary centers by stereospecific photodecarbonylation of crystalline ketones bearing radical-stabilizing alkenyl substituents in their alpha-positions. Crystals of trans-2,6-dimethyl-2,6-di(benzyloxycarbonyl-trans-ethenyl)-cyclohexanone, trans-2, prepared by double Michael addition of benzyl propiolate to 2,6-dimethyl-cyclohexanone iso-butylimine (1), were investigated along with those of the dicarboxylic acid (trans-3) and a dibenzylammonium salt derivative (trans-4) to establish the best substrates for the solid-state reaction. While reactions of the ester and the acid lose CO to give radical combination products with high selectivity at low conversions, the crystalline salt gave a similar product in >97% yield. Explorative reactions carried out under sunlight and in semipreparative (1.5 g) scale highlight the potential of reactions in crystals as a viable strategy for the development of green chemistry.

Molecular crystals with moving parts: synthesis, characterization, and crystal packing of molecular gyroscopes with methyl-substituted triptycyl frames.

We report a highly convergent synthesis for the preparation of molecular gyroscopes consisting of para-phenylene rotors linked by triple bonds to methyl-substituted triptycenes acting as pivots and encapsulating frames. The desired 1,4-bis[2-(2,3,6,7,12,13-hexamethyl-10-alkyl-9-triptycyl)ethynyl]benzenes were prepared from 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene using Diels-Alder cycloadditions and Pd(0)-catalyzed coupling as the key reactions. The main challenge in the synthesis came about in the preparation of 9-alkynyl-triptycenes by Diels-Alder reaction of benzynes and 9-alkynyl-2,3,6,7-tetramethylanthracenes. These reactions occurred with chemical yields and regioselectivities that were strongly influenced by steric and electronic effects of substituents at C10 of the anthracene core. Anthracenes with methyl, propyl, and phenyl substituents were utilized to complete the synthesis of their corresponding molecular gyroscopes, and their solid-state structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Examination of these results indicated that, as expected, the bulky triptycyl groups encourage crystallization motifs that create more free volume around the phenylene rotor, as needed to facilitate fast gyroscopic motion in the solid state.

Exhaustively methylated azacalix[4]arene: preparation, conformation, and crystal structure with exclusively CH/pi-controlled crystal architecture.

[structure: see text]. Described are the preparation, conformation, and crystal structure of exhaustively methylated azacalix[4]arene involving nitrogen atoms as bridging units. NMR and X-ray crystallographic analysis have demonstrated that this novel azacalix[4]arene adopts a 1,3-alternate conformation both in solution and in the solid state. The crystal structure has been characterized solely by intermolecular CH/pi interactions, by which the azacalix[4]arenes mutually interact with each other outside the cavity to furnish a two-dimensional network structure.

We report the first quantum mechanical calculations of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene inclusion complexes in the crystalline state with geometrical aspects demonstrating good agreement with experiment, while comparison of the configurations calculated for an isolated complex and in the crystal, illustrate that crystal packing forces contribute to the observed structure of the host-guest assembly.

Site-directed regiocontrolled synthesis of a 'head-to-head' photodimer via a single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation involving a linear template.

Co-crystallisation of 1,8-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (1,8-nap) with trans-1-(3-pyridyl)-2-(4-pyridyl)ethylene (3,4-bpe) gives a discrete molecular solid-state assembly, 2(3,4-bpe).2(1,8-nap) 1, that is held together by four O-H...N hydrogen bonds wherein the diacid directs a regiocontrolled [2 + 2] photodimerization; the reaction occurs by way of a single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation.

Mixed crystals containing the dioxo complex [[Ph3SiO]2VO2]- and novel pentacoordinated oxoperoxo complex [[Ph3SiO]2VO(O2)]-: X-ray crystal structure and assessment as oxidation catalysts.

[n-Bu4N][[Ph3SiO]2VO2] reacts with H2O2 to yield an oxoperoxo complex which crystallizes as a mixed-crystal compound, [P(C6H5)4][[(C6H5)3 SiO]2VO2]x[[(C6H5)3 SiO]2VO(O2)](1-x), 1(x = 0.57). It has been characterized by elemental analysis and spectroscopy (51V NMR, UV-visible and IR). The X-ray structure analysis reveals the presence of two interrelated anions: [[Ph3SiO]2VVO2]-, 1a, and [[Ph3SiO]2VVO(O2)]-, 1b with a cisoid geometry of the [VO(O2)]+ moiety. The two structures differ only slightly: anion 1a exhibits unusual tetrahedral coordination around the vanadium centre found in the precursor, whereas the geometry at the metal ion in 1b can be described as a trapezoidal pyramid. Steric constraints due to Ph3SiO- ligands and PPh4+ cations are responsible for this geometry. The reactivity of 1 in the C-C bond cleavage of 2-methylcyclohexanone under anaerobic conditions has been studied. The results suggest that peroxygen species are involved in the oxidative cleavage of C-C bonds of cycloalkanones.

Photochromism of diarylethene single crystals: crystal structures and photochromic performance.

Diarylethenes undergo thermally irreversible and fatigue-resistant photochromic reactions not only in solution but also in the single-crystalline phase. This article describes recent development of the single-crystalline photochromism of diarylethene derivatives. We focused on the relationship between their crystal structures and the photochromic performance. Photocyclization/cycloreversion quantum yields, absorption spectra, the absorption anisotropies, and surface morphology changes are strongly dependent on the conformations and packing structures of the molecules in the crystals.

Reversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal guest exchange in a 3-D coordination network based on a zinc porphyrin.

A self-complementary tecton based on a zinc porphyrin core bearing two pyridines at the opposite meso positions leads to the formation of a 3-D coordination network in the crystalline phase which offers channels which are filled with solvent molecules; reversible exchange of the guest molecules has been proven to take place in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal type transformation demonstrating the robustness of the coordination framework.
