Reproduction and heredity beliefs of the Hindus based on their sacred books.

Hindus see their children as the reincarnation of the husband. The mother is only a field where the father lays his seed. That the reincarnated husband might be a girl is explained by a more abundant female "semen." Differences among children are explained by the influence of the mother, the same way as a seedling is affected by the soil in which it grows. Because a son is generally desired, one can find in the sacred books of India rules that might increase the chances not only to have a son, but a healthy and gifted one.

External iliac artery and lumbosacral plexus injury secondary to an open book fracture of the pelvis: report of a case.

Lumbosacral plexus or external iliac artery injuries associated with pelvic fracture are reported rarely in the literature. A case involving a noncompound open book pelvic injury with diastasis of the symphysis pubis and combined ipsilateral lumbosacral plexus and external iliac artery injury is reported. Repeated clinical examination to diagnose vascular lesions with evolving pulse deficits is emphasized.

Endogenous versus exogenous shocks in complex networks: an empirical test using book sale rankings.

We study the precursory and recovery signatures accompanying shocks in complex networks, that we test on a unique database of the Amazon.com ranking of book sales. We find clear distinguishing signatures classifying two types of sales peaks. Exogenous peaks occur abruptly and are followed by a power law relaxation, while endogenous peaks occur after a progressively accelerating power law growth followed by an approximately symmetrical power law relaxation which is slower than for exogenous peaks. These results are rationalized quantitatively by a simple model of epidemic propagation of interactions with long memory within a network of acquaintances. The observed relaxation of sales implies that the sales dynamics is dominated by cascades rather than by the direct effects of news or advertisements, indicating that the social network is close to critical.

Criteria for acceptance of reports in experimental laboratory courses (an examination of the cook-book experiment in physiology and its relation to the scientific process).

The purpose of this paper is to solve a practical problem through a theoretical analysis based on concepts from another scientific field. A new hypothesis emerges from this 'hermeneutical' approach, namely that the criteria derived are a set of useful tools in improving instruction in laboratory course work of the Cook-Book-Experiment type in physiology and related subjects. The hypothesis has been empirically tested only to an extent that deems it worthy of further testing by other teachers.

Is routine antenatal booking vaginal examination necessary for reasons other than cervical cytology if ultrasound examination is planned?

Sixteen ovarian cysts, including one borderline ovarian malignancy, and ten trichomonal vaginal discharges but no cases of cervical incompetence or ectopic pregnancy had been detected at booking vaginal examination in 11,622 consecutive antenatal case records abstracted retrospectively. In an attitude survey of pregnant women 77% believed that vaginal examination was reassuring, 55% found it unpleasant, and 18% thought it could cause miscarriage. This, and a review of the literature, suggests that routine vaginal examination if ultrasound is planned has few advantages beyond the taking of a cervical smear.

Booking ultrasound examinations performed by obstetric senior house officers--time to reevaluate?

We evaluated the proficiency of obstetrics senior house officers, not formally trained in ultrasonography, in assessing fetal viability, the number of fetuses and gestational age. Of 366 women who had an ultrasound examination at the first antenatal visit, 7 (2.1%) had nonviable pregnancies and 7 pairs of twins were correctly identified. Of these women, 329 had a detailed anomaly scan at 18-20 weeks. No anomalies were detected at either scan. Of the booking scans performed by the senior house officers, 89.4% correctly assessed the gestational age of the pregnancy when compared to the anomaly scan (+/- 1 week). One in 10 of the scans performed by the senior house officers was inaccurate. This is important particularly when being used for risk assessment in serum screening for Down syndrome. At present the early ultrasound scan should be performed by more formally trained personnel.

Human genome. Finally, the book of life and instructions for navigating it.

The race is over. On 26 June, to much fanfare, two rival teams announced that they had each completed a version of the "book of life"--a rough draft of the complete human genetic code. So what, exactly, is in these two different volumes, and how will they fine-tune it so that everyone from workaday biologists to pharmaceutical giants can mine its gold?

Attendance at cultural events, reading books or periodicals, and making music or singing in a choir as determinants for survival: Swedish interview survey of living conditions.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the possible influence of attendance at cultural events, reading books or periodicals, making music or singing in a choir as determinants for survival. DESIGN: A simple random sample was drawn of 15,198 individuals aged 16-74 years. Of these, 85% (12,982) were interviewed by trained non-medical interviewers between 1982 and 1983 about cultural activities. They were followed up with respect to survival until 31 December 1991. SETTING: Swedish interview survey of living conditions comprising a random sample of the adult Swedish population. SUBJECTS: 12,675 people interviewed between 1982 and 1983. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Survival of subjects after controlling for eight confounding variables: age, sex, education level, income, long term disease, social network, smoking, and physical exercise. RESULTS: 6,301 men and 6,374 women were followed up; 533 men and 314 women died during this period. The control variables influenced survival in the expected directions except for social network for men; a significant negative effective was found when the analysis was made separately for men and women. We found an influence on mortality when the eight control variables were controlled for in people who rarely attended events compared with those attending most often, the relative risk being 1.57 (95% confidence interval 1.18 to 2.09). CONCLUSION: Attendance at cultural events may have a positive influence on survival. Long term follow up of large samples with confounders that are well controlled for and with the cultural stimulation more highly specified should be used to try to falsify the hypothesis before experiments start.

Microtome: histopathology day book based on a microcomputer system.

The development of a histopathology day book based on a microcomputer is described. The system has the capacity to search on file records for details of previous specimens from current patients. It also possesses a SNOP/SNOMED input and search system that can aggregate data for analytical and other purposes. The system is relatively inexpensive and is user friendly. It has been developed within and is exclusively devoted to the requirements of a histopathology department and is designed to permit expansion to a multiuser system.

The book of life.

It has recently been suggested that the practice of bioethics in the area of biology and genetics has been hampered by the lack of an accurate and appropriate metaphor. Beginning with previous metaphors that have compared the genome with a static blueprint or "book of life", I develop a dynamic metaphor that is compatible with our present understanding of the role of genetics in biology. The resulting metaphor is not only an accurate representation of current biology but of particular use to bioethicists and non-biologists in general.

A recommended core book list for public health libraries.

Public health is a multidisciplinary field ranging broadly across the health care spectrum. In light of this diversity the selection of basic reference books and textbooks in the field is a complex task. This paper first defines the components of what is public health and then presents such a list to serve as a guide to the librarian faced with this task.

Sensitivity of a rapid antigen detection test for group A streptococci in a private pediatric office setting: answering the Red Book's request for validation.

In the office laboratory of our private practice, the sensitivity of a single rapid antigen detection (RAD) test for group A streptococci (compared with backup throat culture) was examined over 3 winter periods. When cultures were held only 24 hours, the sensitivity was 92%; in the second period, when cultures were held to 48 hours, the sensitivity declined significantly to 86%; when the cultures were read without knowledge of the RAD test result, the sensitivity was 85%. As the Red Book Committee has suggested, physician office laboratories should validate the sensitivity of their RAD test against culture onto blood agar before abandoning the backup throat culture.

[Didactic books and teaching for health: the case of psychotropic drugs].

Eighteen didactic books on Sciences/Biology, Civic and Moral Education and Brazilian Political and Social Studies, for primary and secondary schools, were analyzed, with a view to assessing the way in which the issue of psychotropic drug use is dealt with. The texts analyzed are structurally centered on the discussion of the harmful effects of drugs instead of discussing others topics (such as etiology, concepts, treatment, incidence and prevalence). The texts are characterized especially by the use of non-scientific language in which emotional appeal and an exceedingly exacerbated style are the rule. The drug user is described as being necessarily a moral, physical and psychological decadent. The results were discussed in the light of recent theories on the prevention of drug abuse.

Becoming wise: a psycho-gerontological interpretation of the Book of Job.

The Book of Job, a prototypical "wisdom" text from the fifth or sixth century B.C.E., powerfully articulates a good man's struggle to understand unexpected misfortune. In coming to terms with his suffering and gaining understanding of his place in the universe, Job demonstrates the complex, dynamic yet integrative nature of growing wise. Drawing on our synthetic model of wisdom, we claim wisdom occurs in personality, cognition, and conation that transforms intrapersonal, interpersonal, and transpersonal experience. We discuss gender-specific obstacles that Job overcomes in attaining wisdom by analyzing modern interpretations of the text, which underscore its perdurance in a post-modern age.

Science, philosophy, and society: some recent books.

The essay discusses a number of issues developed in several recent books on philosophical and ethical problems in the natural sciences, both pure (especially biology) and applied (especially medicine). The scaffolding of the discussion can be outlined as follows: Science is most coherently portrayed as a set of activities through which societies deal with a distinctive, but continually evolving set of interwoven practical, empirical, and conceptual problems. Consequently, approaches which attempt to delineate universal features of "scientific methods" or to depict the sciences as providing an approximation to an "objective" view of reality are much less enlightening than are analyses rooted directly in concrete scientific history and in the actual interplay of science with other social configurations. However, scientists are granted some meaningful autonomy in exercising their "curiosity" and there is a real sense in which scientific ideas and activities do possess momentum of their own. In other words, as is also true for other spheres, such as the arts, it is important not to fall into mechanical viewpoints which treat the movement of science as simply a derivative of forces generated elsewhere.

A cookery book for self-catering mentally handicapped.

The more able patients from hospitals for the mentally handicapped in Southmead Health District Bristol, are being established in minimal-support homes. Dietitians were asked to advise on how to teach practical cookery skills and encourage good nutrition. They were unable to recommend any of the available cookery books, and have designed a recipe folder in picture form of suitable meals for one week. The mentally handicapped patient's background is discussed as it relates to the practical problems of rehabilitation.
