[Use of oxygen baths in the early rehabilitation of patients with transient disorders of cerebrovascular circulation].

As many as 75 patients with a history of transitory disorders of cerebral circulation, minor brain strokes and brain strokes with minimum residual symptomatology were examined. Multimodality rehabilitation treatment of these patients included oxygen baths which were administered early (starting from the 4th-5th week since the moment of disorder onset) or in the long-term period. The conclusion is made that balneotherapy can be included into a complex of treatment measures along with antiaggregation remedies as early as possible, leading to improvement in 90% of patients together with recovery of normal function of hemostasis both in persons with the latent DVC syndrome and in those with hypercoagulation. It has been established that oxygen baths do not produce any angiospastic effect or material changes in the lipid content of blood serum. The treatment with the use of oxygen baths administered in the long-term period turned out less effective since only 46% of patients improved.

[The public health relevance of various microbiologic marker pathogens for assessing bathing water].

Regarding the quality of natural recreational water for bathing purposes, the limit values of E. coli and coliforms, faecal coliforms and totalcoliforms, respectively, laid down by the Council of the European Community, differ considerably from those prescribed by some Land Governments of the Federal Republic of Germany and by the DIN Standard Regulation No. 19643 entitled 'Processing and Disinfection of Water in Swimming Pools and Basins in Public Baths'. It must be concluded by virtue of hygienically plausible considerations, as well as for juridical reasons, that only the limit values of the EC-Code of Practice are authoritative, whereas standards of the DIN 19643, especially in respect of E. coli and coliforms, differing from the limit values of the EC-Code of Practice are not legally binding. Moreover, coliforms are not relevant for controlling swimming pools and basins in public baths. Staphylococcus aureus should therefore be investigated instead whereas other parameters such as E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and total colony counts are good markers. However, the standards of these organisms as established by the DIN 19643 are more in line with technical practibility and biased aesthetics instead of the hygienically important prinicple of commensurability.

["Dry" carbon dioxide baths in treating patients with myocardial infarction at the sanatorium stage of rehabilitation].

A group of 75 patients with a history of myocardial infarction and repeated myocardial infarction were subjected to treatment involving dry carbon dioxide baths. Its results demonstrated normalization of IHD manifestations, such as coronary and heart failure, functional state of the cardiovascular system, its reserve potentialities and adaptation to physical effort. Under the influence of a course treatment with dry carbon dioxide baths hemodynamic parameters of cardiac output (cardiac and stroke volume) underwent favourable changes, rhythm slowed down, diastole became longer and systolic and diastolic arterial pressure decreased. The data obtained substantiate application of dry carbon dioxide baths in the recovery period to I-III functional classes patients with a history of myocardial infarction.

[Treatment of dry skin by the use of a "physiologic" bath oil].

The results obtained by using a bath oil (Idrovel bath) for treating skin dryness, both primary and associated with pathological conditions, are reported. Twenty patients out of 40 considered for treatment were undergoing photochemotherapy. The patients were evaluated both subjectively and, in order to obtain an objective measuring of skin hydratation, by instrumental capacitance method. The results were very encouraging, characterized by a statistically significant increase of capacitance data after treatment. These results seem to be due to the bath oil formulation, i.e. vegetal polyunsaturated oil mixture with little liquid paraffin content. In conclusion, this formulation is very similar to normal epidermal lipids composition, and seems to represent a good compromise between the occlusive and integrative effects of topical emulsions.

The sauna and sauna bathing habits--a psychoanalytic point of view.

Sauna bathing is a pleasant and relaxing experience that combines psychic, physical and social pleasures. A person's inner feelings about sauna bathing, its essential components are mainly unconscious. The sauna bath reduces the aggressive behaviour and enables bathers to forget the commonplace pressures of everyday life. The sauna evokes memories of childhood development, awakening feelings of maternal warmth and paternal power in the bather. The sauna is a positive mental health resource, even though its effects are transitory.

[Evaluation of bacteriological examinations of bathing-water from lakes in Carinthia (author's transl)].

The evaluation of the bacteriological examinations relates on 2330 water-samples, which were taken from 76 bathing-places of 23 Carinthian lakes in the course of 11 years. The examinations were performed for the purpose of hygienic control. After a short supervision on the methods of examination and of sampling the base of judgement is discussed. A relation to the limnological classification of the lakes could be made from the hygienic point of view. In bathing lakes in the alpine region the experiences proved a lower border-value for the indicators of fecal-charge more from the reason of lake-protection than from the reason of protection of the human health. A proposal for the judgement of bathing-water from lakes is made, including the significance of enterococci, and a scheme for recording the results is given.

[Arsenic-iron balneotherapy in anxiety syndromes. Controlled clinical study at the Levico thermal baths].

A comparative clinical study was conducted in order to assess the efficacy of arsenic-iron bath treatment in subjects suffering from endogenous reactive anxiety syndromes with somatisation. The study group of 76 subjects included 50 given the classic arsenic-iron bath treatment for two weeks and 26 untreated controls. Zung and Crown self-assessment Rating Scales amplified with items of socioepidemiological interest were completed by all subjects on entry, immediately after treatment and a mean 4 months later. Biometrical analysis of the data collected each time revealed a statistically significant (0.001 less than P less than 0.05) reduction in all parameters evaluated (anxiety, somatisation forms, consumption of drugs and number of medical consultations) among the treated Group. In contrast no significant difference was revealed among the untreated group. In order to verify the possible influence of climate the data on the control group, all local people, were then compared only with data on treated "locals". Here too there was a statistically significant reduction in anxiety and somatisation parameters only among treated subjects. It is therefore clear that the difference between the two groups is solely attributable to the arsenic-iron baths whose therapeutic efficacy is therefore confirmed.

Trioxsalen bath plus UVA treatment of psoriasis. Plasma concentration of the drug and clinical results.

Forty-five patients with psoriasis were treated with trioxsalen bath plus UVA. Good or excellent results were obtained in 34 (67%) of the 51 treatments. Trioxsalen plasma concentrations were determined at different stages of the treatment in 10 patients 1 hour after trioxsalen bath, and in 11 patients undergoing treatment for vitiligo 2 hours after ingestion of 0.6 mg trioxsalen per kilogram body weight. The determinations were performed using the glass capillary, gas chromatography, mass spectrometry method, reaching a sensitivity of greater than or equal to 25 pg/ml. The trioxsalen plasma concentrations varied between 12.5 and 0.27 ng/ml after oral ingestion and between approximately 9 ng/ml and less than 25 pg/ml after bath application.

Bathing water control according to the EEC Directive with a critical evaluation of coliforms as pollution indicators in marine environments.

The Danish bathing water control system as it has been worked out on the basis of the EEC Directive is described. According to the national tradition a standard for E. coli which is more stringent that the mandatory value in the directive has been maintained. Additionally water which has not distinctly been appointed as bathing water is protected against deterioration in the national legislation. Local authorities have been authorized to prohibit dogs on the beaches. Results from 1978 show that 16284 samples were taken from 1525 sampling points. Acceptable water quality was proved at 1292 stations. Only at 23 stations did local authorities completely prohibit bathing activities. The coast has been classified as excellent, good or unfit for recreational use. In fig. 1 a survey of water quality for the whole country is indicated. The use of coliforms as pollution does not essentially improve the evaluation of the hygienic condition of the water at least in the marine environment.

[The effect of radon baths at Khmel'nik health resort on the central hemodynamic indices, on thyroid function and on adrenal glucocorticoid function in hypertension patients].

As many as 63 patients with stage I, II hypertensive disease were examined. Characteristics of central hemodynamics were studied by means of tetrapolar thoracic rheography, the content of thyroid-stimulating hormone, thyroxin, triiodothyranine, hydrocortisone were determined by radioimmunologic method. All investigations were done before and after the patients having radon baths. Hypotensive effect of radon baths in hyperkinetic type hemodynamics was manifested by a significant drop in cardiac index and increase in specific peripheral resistance. In hypokinetic type hemodynamics there was a significant fall in average hemodynamic pressure, and improvement of the arteriole patency. The levels of thyroxin and hydrocortisone have raised significantly. The Khmel'nik health resort radon baths have hypotensive effect in HD patients, enhance the function of the thyroid gland and glucocorticoid function of the adrenals.

[Studies on the effect of deltamethrin bath treatment of hamsters infected with Leishmania donovani for interrupting kala-azar transmission].

Phlebotomus chinensis were fed respectively on two groups of Cricetulus barabensis infected with Leishmania donovani, of which one group had received deltamethrin bath and the other was not treated with insecticide bath. The results showed that all the sandflies in the former group died within 24 hours, while those in the latter group had a high survival rate. Among the 165 sandflies examined, 114 (69.1%) became infected. The promastigotes not only developed well in the midgut, but also invaded esophagus, pharynx and proboscis. In the control group, the mortality of sandflies in 24 hours was 5.1% (3/59). According to the data obtained in the present study, the authors consider that insecticide bath treatment of infected domestic dogs in endemic villages could be used for interrupting kala-azar transmission.

[The combined use of carbon dioxide baths and physical training on a bicycle ergometer in the treatment of patients with ischemic heart disease at sanatoria and health resorts].

The effectiveness of exercise on bicycle ergometer in combination with effervescent baths was studied in 158 patients with ischemic heart disease receiving treatment in conditions of the sanatorium. Relevant combination is shown to raise IHD sanatorium treatment efficacy, the best regimen being bicycle ergometry exercise followed in 2 hours by the baths or performed on the next day after the bath taking.

[The effect of iodobromide baths on the physical work capacity and extrasystole in patients with ischemic heart disease and stable stenocardia].

68 patients with CHD and stable angina pectoris class 1-2 in the presence of extrasystole were examined (spiro-bicycle ergometry, Holter ECG monitoring) before and after a course of general iodobromide baths (38 patients) or general fresh-water baths (30 patients). General iodobromide baths exerted marked antiarrhythmic effect in coronary heart disease with stable angina pectoris, the occurrence of ventricular, supraventricular extrasystoles reduced at least by half. Painful and silent myocardial ischemia decreased. Due to training effect of iodobromide balneotherapy muscular performance and coronary heart reserves improved.

[The effect of carbon dioxide baths on the physical work capacity and extrasystole of patients with ischemic heart disease and stable stenocardia].

97 patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) and stable angina pectoris class I and II underwent balneotherapy: 67 patients took effervescent baths and 30 patients took baths without carbon dioxide. Spiroveloergometry and ambulatory Holter's monitoring showed that carbon dioxide baths contribute to enhancement of antiarrhythmic effect in CHD patients with stable angina pectoris and secure a 50% decrease in the mean occurrence of ventricular and supraventricular extrasystoles correlating with a reduction in myocardial ischemia (painful and silent). There is also a training effect associated with improvement of muscular performance and coronary heart reserve.

[The effect of contrast baths on the hemostatic function of patients with ischemic heart disease].

Contrast baths effects on hemostasis were studied in 72 patients with postinfarction cardiosclerosis and stable angina pectoris. Hemostasis was assessed by recalcification time, blood plasma tolerance to heparin, fibrinolytic activity, functional activity of antithrombin, soluble fibrin-monomeric complex, platelet count and aggregation. The results were compared to those in patients exposed to laser irradiation. Hydrotherapy with contrast baths was hemostatically effective in 70.9% of patients. Blood coagulation and platelet aggregation improved, the risk of intravascular microthrombogenesis diminished. Contrast baths had more pronounced beneficial effects on coagulation in ischemic heart disease of NYHA functional class II.

Determination of the carbon kinetic isotope effects on propane hydroxylation mediated by the methane monooxygenases from Methylococcus capsulatus (Bath) by using stable carbon isotopic analysis.

Authentic propane with known position-specific carbon isotope composition at each carbon atom was subjected to hydroxylation by the particulate and soluble methane monooxygenase (pMMO and sMMO) from Methylococcus capsulatus (Bath), and the corresponding position-specific carbon isotope content was redetermined for the product 2-propanol. Neither the reaction mediated by pMMO nor that with sMMO showed an intermolecular (12)C/(13)C kinetic isotope effect effect on the propane hydroxylation at the secondary carbon; this indicates that there is little structural change at the carbon center attacked during formation of the transition state in the rate-determining step. This finding is in line with the concerted mechanism proposed for pMMO (Bath), and suggested for sMMO (Bath), namely, direct side-on insertion of an active "O" species across the C-H bond, as has been previously reported for singlet carbene insertion.

Chlorophyllin chemoprevention in trout initiated by aflatoxin B(1) bath treatment: An evaluation of reduced bioavailability vs. target organ protective mechanisms.

Chlorophyllin (CHL) is known to inhibit DNA adduction and hepatocarcinogenesis in trout when administered at doses up to 4000 ppm in the diet with aflatoxin B(1) (AFB(1)). The principal protective mechanism is believed to involve CHL:AFB(1) complex formation, which may reduce systemic carcinogen absorption. However, mechanisms operative within the target organ in situ have not been ruled out. The present study used alternative CHL and AFB(1) exposures as well as hepatic metabolism studies to distinguish these mechanisms. Duplicate lots of 150 rainbow trout each were initiated by brief water bath exposure to 0.1 ppm AFB(1), with or without 500 ppm CHL in the water. The addition of 500 ppm CHL to the water bath, under conditions where AFB(1) is calculated to be >99% sequestered as the CHL:AFB(1) complex, reduced hepatic AFB(1)-DNA adduction by 95% and reduced hepatocarcinogenesis from 20.5% to 2%, compared with exposure to AFB(1) alone. Inclusion of 500 ppm CHL in the water bath also significantly reduced total body burden and hepatic levels of AFB(1) as well as AFB(2), a structural analogue of AFB(1) unable to directly form the 8,9-epoxide proximate electrophile but equally capable of complexing with CHL. By contrast, internal target organ CHL loading by pretreatment of trout with 4000 ppm dietary CHL for 7 days prior to (and 2 days following) AFB(1) waterbath exposure had no effect on AFB(1)-DNA adduction or tumorigenicity. Dietary CHL up to 8000 ppm had no effect on hepatic CYP2K1, CYP1A, glutathione transferase, UDP-glucuronosyl transferase, or, with one exception, the relative ratios among hepatic AFB(1) metabolites in vivo. These results support the hypothesis that CHL:AFB(1) complex formation and reduced systemic AFB(1) bioavailability is a principal mechanism for CHL chemoprevention in this model and that in situ target organ inhibitory mechanisms are relatively insignificant.
