Ground-glass computed tomography pattern in chronic beryllium disease: pathologic substratum and evolution.

Five cases of chronic beryllium disease with predominant or isolated diffuse ground-glass lung opacities on computed tomography are reported with correlation to lung pathology. The ground-glass attenuation was either homogeneous and isolated (n = 1) or patchy and clearly predominant (n = 4) over linear and nodular opacities. In 4 cases, histologic samples showed a prominent diffuse involvement of the alveolar-capillary walls by florid granulomas. Evolution under corticosteroid was remarkable by the appearance of small-sized cysts in 3 cases.

Unexpected behavior of the near-threshold double-photoionization cross section of beryllium.

The threshold region of the double-photoionization cross section of atomic beryllium was investigated using monochromatized synchrotron radiation. The photon energy dependence of the double-photoionization cross section can be described by the Wannier power law up to 1.7 eV above threshold. However, we unexpectedly find oscillations in the cross section, which are in excellent agreement with a modulated threshold law based on the Coulomb-dipole theory [Phys. Rev. Lett. 49, 365 (1982)]]. This new finding casts some doubts on the general applicability of the Wannier power law.

Photoexcitation of K-shell and L-shell hollow beryllium.

We have observed K-shell and L-shell hollow beryllium atoms (2s(2)2p3s and 1s3s(2)3p) created by photoexcitation using synchrotron radiation. Resonance shapes were fitted to the Fano profile and the parameters were deduced. A Dirac-Fock calculation was performed to identify the configuration of the peaks and to predict other hollow atomic peaks. The results of the calculation were in good agreement with the experimental data. The comparison of the transition strength has revealed that the three-electron photoexcitation to the 1s3s(2)3p configuration is stronger than the two-electron photoexcitation to the 2s(2)2p3s configuration. This is attributed to the large overlap between the 2s orbital of the ground state (1s(2)2s(2)) with the orbital of the L-shell hollow state (1s3s(2)3p).

A new rubidium beryllium borate, RbBe4(BO3)3.

Single crystals of a new rubidium beryllium borate, RbBe4(BO3)3, have been obtained by spontaneous nucleation from a high-temperature melt. This new orthorhombic (Pnma) structure type contains [Be2BO4]- rings, made of two BeO4 tetrahedra and one BO3 triangle, which constitute the basic structural units. The m plane runs through the B and one of the O atoms and intersects the ring. These rings form chains in the a direction, which are connected in the b and c directions to form zeolite-type cages in which the Rb+ cations are located, at sites of m symmetry.

Beryllium-10 from the Sun.

Beryllium-10 (10Be) in excess of that expected from in situ cosmic ray spallation reactions is present in lunar surface soil 78481; its presence was revealed with a sequential leaching technique. This excess 10Be, representing only 0.7 to 1.1% of the total 10Be inventory, is associated with surface layers (<1 micrometer) of the mineral grains composing 78481. This excess 10Be and its association with surficial layers corresponds to (1.9 +/- 0.8) x 10(8) atoms per square centimeter, requiring a 10Be implantation rate of (2.9 +/- 1.2) x 10(-6) atoms per square centimeter per second on the surface of the Moon. The most likely site for the production of this excess (10)Be is the Sun's atmosphere. The 10Be is entrained into the solar wind and transported to the lunar surface.

Observer variation and relationship of computed tomography to severity of beryllium disease.

Although high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) is commonly used to assess interstitial lung disease (ILD), relatively little is known about interrater reliability and construct validity of HRCT-reported nodules, ground-glass opacity, or other typical findings. We determined the interobserver and intraobserver variability of HRCT findings and correlated HRCT abnormalities with physiologic measures in 57 patients with chronic beryllium disease (CBD). Reliability of HRCT scan measurements were assessed using weighted kappa (K(W)) and intraclass correlation coefficients. We correlated HRCT with spirometry, body plethysmographic lung volumes, diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DL(CO)), maximal exercise testing with measurement of arterial blood gases, and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL). Interobserver agreement for three of the HRCT abnormalities found in CBD was moderate: the K(W) for nodules, septal lines, and ground-glass attenuation were 0.53, 0.44, and 0.53, respectively. Agreement was poor for bronchial wall thickening (K(W) = 0.15). HRCT scores correlated significantly with DL(CO), gas exchange at rest and at maximal exercise, and lung volume. This study demonstrates that HRCT has good interrater reliability and correlates with indices of the severity of granulomatous lung diseases such as CBD.

Increased glutathione and glutathione peroxidase in lungs of individuals with chronic beryllium disease.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are mediators of chronic tissue damage and fibrosis. Endogenous antioxidants may increase in response to oxidants and reduce tissue injury. We investigated the antioxidant response of the lungs to the chronic release of ROS, as occurs in the immune-specific granulomatous inflammation of chronic beryllium disease (CBD), and compared it with that in healthy controls and individuals exposed to cigarette smoke. The antioxidants superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione (GSH) were quantitated in lung epithelial lining fluid (ELF) and serum from control subjects (n = 10), cigarette smokers (n = 8), and individuals with CBD (n = 9). GPx activity and extracellular GPx (eGPx) protein were increased in the ELF of subjects with CBD in comparison with that of control subjects and smokers (eGPx in ELF: controls, 1.3 +/- 0.2 microgram/ml, smokers, 1.9 +/- 0.3 microgram/ml, CBD, 3.8 +/- 0.8 microgram/ml; p = 0.002; GPx U/ml ELF, controls 1.4 +/- 0.3, smokers 1.8 +/- 0.4, CBD, 4.5 +/- 1, p = 0.02). Smokers' ELF had higher levels of GSH than that of controls, but CBD patients' ELF contained much more GSH than that of either controls or smokers (p < 0.001). Increases in GSH were correlated with eGPx, indicating similar inducing mechanisms for these antioxidants. Thus, coordinate augmentation of the glutathione antioxidant system occurs in granulomatous lung inflammation.

Observations on nickel-free, beryllium-free alloys for fixed prostheses.

Mechanical properties, electrochemical behavior, heat treatment response, micro-structural features, and compositions of two proprietary nickel-free, beryllium-free fixed prosthodontic alloys were studied. The alloys showed compositional and microstructural differences. Mechanical property values of Biocast and Neobond II are comparable with those of base metal alloys for removable partial dentures. The high hardness, high modulus of elasticity, and low elongation impede adjustment, adaptation of margins, and polishing of the final restoration.

Localization of sudanophil material at the sites of calcification in dentine, and the compact bone and epiphyseal cartilage plate of tibia in the rat given beryllium carbonate.

The localization of sudanophil material at dentine, the compact bone and epiphyseal cartilage plate of tibia of rat given beryllium carbonate was examined. Sudanophil material was seen at the boundary parts between dentine and widened predentine, and between widened preosseous matrix and calcified bone, but it was not seen at the area corresponding to the zone of provisional calcification. These facts suggest that the localization of sudanophil material in hard tissue of rat with Be rickets was similar to that in vitamin D deficient-induced rickets. This sudanophil material was not disappeared by the enzymes such as papain, pepsin and hyaluronidase as described in vitamin D deficient-induced rickets (Irving, 1960, 1963). Accordingly, it was suggested that the substance was not proteins and mucopolysaccharide.
