[Features of the clinical picture and dynamics of endogenous depression developing in adolescence (clinico-catamnestic study)].

The clinical picture and time-course of endogenic depressions were studied in 31 subjects who fell ill in adolescence, at the age of 10-17 years. The follow-up continued for 22 years. At the initial stages the overwhelming majority of the adolescents (93.55%) showed "masked" atypical manifestations of depression. The follow-up findings made it possible to identify a certain pattern in the time-course and transformation of affective disturbances. With time the affective disorders became clear-cut in half of the patients and no further complications of the syndrome structure were observed. In other cases the affective symptomatology was attended by hallucinational and hallucination-delirious disturbances. In the remaining cases a short stage of affective disturbances was followed by a negative symptomatology or the disease assumed a continuous course with the appearance of chronic productive disorders. The premorbid characteristics of adolescents and the structural specificities of the first depressive attack can serve as early prognostic criteria.

[Biological development of adolescents from rural areas, students of the School of Agriculture].

The paper contains the data on 15 somatic traits of 224 pupils of the Secondary School of Agriculture in Warsaw Voivodship, the time of menarche in girls was also noted. As compared with rural youth as a whole, their height and weight were found to be greater which is probably due to their superior living conditions. In comparison with their contemporaries living in Warsaw, their height and weight were found to be inferior while their body proportions were different. In girls, menarche appeared to have been delayed as compared with both Warsaw girls and rural girls generally throughout Poland.

[Epidemiology of violent deaths in Switzerland over a period of 10 years. A worrisome development among adolescents and young adults].

Violent deaths include those by accident (in traffic or otherwise), suicide and homicide. The present article studies, for different age groups (children, adolescents, youth, adults and elderly), the evolution of violent death rates in Switzerland over a ten-year period, on the basis of the data collected by the Federal Office for Statistics. These rates show two peaks, in the 15-24 age group and in the elderly (70-74 years of age). From 1 year to 35 years of age, violence is the most common cause of death. From 1970 to 1980, violent death rates tended to decrease for all the age groups considered except the 15-24 year olds, for whom it increased. This last trend is particularly marked for females, so that the difference between violent death rates in women and men is narrowing. Methodological aspects of studies of this kind are discussed, comparisons are drawn with research in other countries and some practical implications of our results are presented.

Drug use and personality in adolescence and young adulthood: structural models with nonnormal variables.

An introduction to structural modeling with nonnormal continuous variables is provided using the equations language of the micro-mainframe program EQS in the context of a longitudinal study of adolescent development that followed about 700 adolescents across an 8-year span into young adulthood. 2 models relating drug use and personality are developed to assess the influence of drug use on personality, and personality on drug use. A high level of self-acceptance is shown to have a small but significant inoculating effect against subsequent cannabis use in both early and late adolescence, while a small positive effect of cannabis use on subsequent self-acceptance occurs only during early adolescence. Substantial stability of self-derogation, cannabis use, and law abidance are demonstrated, with self-derogation during adolescence leading to increased law abidance during young adulthood.

Sexual and moral development of Israeli female adolescents from city and kibbutz: perspectives of Kohlberg and Gilligan.

This paper analyzes real-life moral dilemmas of Israeli city and kibbutz adolescents. The contribution of Gilligan's theory to our knowledge of adolescent moral development as originally conceived by Kohlberg is emphasized. It is suggested that Kohlberg's view of the adolescent as a moral philosopher limits the understanding of the moral development of female adolescents, who use both care and justice in their self-descriptions within existing relationships.
