Association between environment and psycho-emotional stress experienced at sea by Lithuanian and Latvian seamen.

This is the first scientific research in Lithuania and Latvia that involves a national cross-sectional study of the seamen of two different countries--Lithuania and Latvia--including the evaluation and comparison of seamen's working environment, lifestyle, health, the prevalence of health-damaging risk factors, as well as the causative relationships between the objective and subjective health evaluation and psycho-emotional stress experienced at sea. The aim of the study was to investigate the frequency and predictors of the psycho-emotional stress experienced at sea by Lithuanian and Latvian seamen. Beside the common statistical methods, the logistic stepwise regression analysis was used in order to find the risk factors of the self-rated stress and to correct the risk estimates for the confounding variables. Seamen of both countries indicated that they experienced psycho-emotional stress after, on the average, 2.7-2.8 months from the beginning of the voyage. More than one-half (57.5%) of Latvian seamen stated that they had experienced psycho-emotional stress, whereas the respective percentage of Lithuanian seamen was smaller (46.1%). The obtained findings showed that, having evaluated the influence of all the analyzed factors (industry-specific, health and lifestyle, medical and demographic), there was no significant difference between the seamen of the two countries concerning the experience of psycho-emotional stress on the ship. The following main prognostic factors related to the occurrence of psycho-emotional stress on the ship were determined: higher or specialized secondary education level (p<0.001), age of 35-44 or 45-54 years (p<0.01), 9-10 or 11-12 hours of work per day when being exposed to detrimental factors (p<0.01), the evaluation of one's health status as "average" (p<0.05), and evaluation of one's physical capacity as "quite good" or "average" (p<0.01). The occurrence of psycho-emotional stress was mostly influenced by work in the environment requiring increased visual strain (p<0.001) and vibration (p<0.05). We found that the following factors were associated with the occurrence of psycho-emotional stress on the ship: depression that occurred more frequently at sea than on shore (p<0.001), disturbed working and resting regimen due to time zone changes (p<0.001), and disturbed regular sexual life (p<0.001). Many of the unique aspects of seafaring are unchangeable. However, it possible to modify, supplement, or develop new strategies to reduce the impact these factors have on the health of individual seafarers.

[Relationship between visual fatigue of students and artificial illumination in classroom with television].

A comparison of visual fatigue of 105 students 20-25 yrs old, attending classes with T. V. education program at 30, 45, 65, 100, 150 (lx) on desk was made. Visual fatigue was determined by the changes of visuognosis persistent time, nearest and farthest point in nearvision, and accommodation from before to after classes. The results indicated that the lightest fatigue appeared in 65 1x. Under the illuminance, fluorescent lamp used as light source was more advantageous than incandescent lamp, but the difference of visual fatigue between watching colour and black-white television was not (obvious).

[Functional state of the body and morbidity among diamond cutters].

The article contains results of the studies of the visual analyzer, cardio-vascular system and central nervous system, as well as prevalence and structure of morbidity with temporary disability among the major professions in diamond processing. It was established that resulting from a complex of labour factors (hypodynamics, forced posture at work, overstrain of the sight, monotony) the working capacity was falling down in the shift dynamics, fatiguability was rapidly developing with concomitant decline in health state indices, thus necessitating the introduction of preventive measures.

[Ergo-ophthalmologic aspects of work responsibilities with high visual requirements].

Visual requirements, in the case of modern technologies, are concerned in particular with control and regulation mechanisms of the visual system. For this reason differentiated analyses of visual requirements are necessary along with comprehensive optometrical care. In the latest official sight capacity criteria D 77, account is taken of these points. Measurements of the strain experienced, the routine of breaks during working hours and the extension of optometrical methods are therefore subjects of current research. Attention needs to be paid to raising the qualification levels and to finding new partners for cooperation.

[Characteristics of visual fatigue developing during the performance of precision operations].

The assessment of visual fatigue developing in the process of performing precision works with the usage of monocular optic devices has shown that visual fatigue develops due to impairment of the functional state of binocular functions to which changes of the accommodation system join. The obtained psychophysiologic portraits can be helpful for a quantitative assessment of developing visual fatigue.

[Rest position of the eyes and its effect on viewing distance and visual fatigue in computer display work].

A deviation between the angle of convergence during visual work and the resting level of the vergence system (vergence discrepancy) should be associated with costs; subjects should tend to reduce these costs by increasing the observation distance. The remaining costs should contribute to visual fatigue. Both hypotheses were tested using a sample of 40 subjects, mainly students. In agreement with the first hypothesis, subjects with large initial vergence discrepancy increased their observation distance more in the course of 1 1/2 hours of visual work than subjects with smaller initial vergence discrepancy. Visual fatigue was assessed using a set of questions developed in two pilot studies. Contrary to the second hypothesis, visual fatigue did not depend on effective vergence discrepancy, that is, the deviation between the resting level of the vergence system and the actual angle of convergence. In addition, such a relationship was not found for further dependent variables (performance, BMS questionnaire, critical flicker frequency, evaluation of conditions of work, postural complaints). The results are discussed with respect to the role of tonic and dynamic components of the vergence system for visual fatigue.
