The mediating role of protective factors in relationship between caregiving components and psychosocial adjustment among young carers: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Higher youth caregiving is associated with poorer psychosocial outcomes in young carers; hence a research priority is to investigate protective factors that mitigate the adverse effects of youth caregiving. This systematic review with meta-analysis examined the relationships among youth caregiving components and young carer psychosocial adjustment and protective factors, as well as the mediating role of the protective factors in the relationship between caregiving components and psychosocial adjustment. METHODS: Three electronic databases were searched until April 2024 and 10,244 unique publications were identified. Following abstract and title screening, 422 publications were subjected to full-text screening and 60 quantitative studies were included in this study. RESULTS: Meta-analytic structural equation modeling (MASEM) results revealed positive direct effects of caregiving responsibilities and caregiving experiences on benefit finding (β = .43, 95% CI [.074, .782], p < .05) and emotion regulation (β = .72, 95% CI [.44, 1.00], p < .001), respectively. However, there was neither a significant direct effect of caregiving components on psychosocial adjustment nor a significant indirect effect of caregiving components on psychosocial adjustment through benefit finding or emotion regulation. CONCLUSION: Findings revealed a need for research into how caregiving contextual factors affect relations among youth caregiving, protective factors, and adjustment.

A risk-need-responsivity (RNR)-informed systematic review of needs during the pretrial period.

OBJECTIVE: Pretrial risk assessments are becoming increasingly popular in the United States. Despite the importance of assessing and intervening around "needs" in the risk-need-responsivity model, few pretrial risk assessments include comprehensive assessment of needs. We aim to provide a systematic review of the prevalence of and predictive utility of needs within the pretrial population. HYPOTHESES: There were no hypotheses given the nature of the study. METHOD: We conducted searches for articles in the EBSCO, ProQuest, and Google Scholar databases using key words related to 11 needs domains: antisocial personality, procriminal attitudes, procriminal associates, substance use, family/marital relationships, school/work, prosocial recreational activities, self-esteem, housing, mental health, and physical health. We identified 215 articles that reported on the prevalence of needs or explored their predictive associations with pretrial misconduct outcomes in adult populations. RESULTS: Overall, we find few comprehensive investigations of needs in the pretrial domain, apart from substance use. Variation in methodology and operationalization contributes to wide variability in prevalence estimates. We found only 15 articles that examined predictive associations between pretrial needs and outcomes, which were limited to investigations of behavioral health, employment, and housing needs. Substance use and housing needs emerged as the only consistent predictors of pretrial misconduct. CONCLUSIONS: Researchers should more directly assess the prevalence and predictive utility of needs within the pretrial period to bolster the evidence base for including these factors in pretrial risk assessments. Analyzing salinity tolerance in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella): Insights from genome-wide association study and genomic selection.

Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) is one of the most widely cultured freshwater fish species globally. However, the expansion of its farming scale faces severe limitation owing to freshwater scarcity; therefore, the development of strains with greater salinity tolerance is key for expanding production using brackish water resources. To investigate the genetic basis of salinity tolerance in grass carp, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was conducted using 200 individuals representing extreme phenotypes, namely salinity-tolerant and salinity-sensitive groups. In total, 17 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) related to salinity tolerance were detected, which were distributed across 11 chromosomes. Through gene annotation, 38 candidate genes were obtained from these loci. Enrichment analysis revealed these candidate genes are primarily implicated in key biological processes, including osmotic regulation, energy metabolism, and stress responses. Analyses of different SNP densities revealed that the 5 K SNP density panel can balance prediction accuracy and computational efficiency. The BayesA model achieved the highest prediction accuracy under the GWAS_Evenly selection strategy, with substantial reductions in mean absolute error and mean square error. This study reveals the genetic mechanisms of salinity tolerance in grass carp, which might be optimized through genomic selection, and provides insights for selectively breeding new varieties with greater salinity tolerance.

Tissue-derived extracellular matrix hydrogels instruct epigenetic adaptation in metastatic colonization.

The extracellular matrix (ECM) plays a central role in regulating tumor progression and metastatic colonization by providing biochemical and mechanical signals that shape cancer cell fate. However, most organoid culture systems rely on basement membrane extracts that fail to reproduce the tissue-specific extracellular environments encountered during metastasis. Here, we develop tissue-derived decellularized matrix hydrogels to reconstruct organ-specific microenvironments and investigate epigenetic adaptation to ECM cues during metastatic colonization. Patient-derived colorectal cancer organoids cultured in colon-derived matrices exhibited enhanced maintenance of stem-like phenotypes and colon-specific chromatin accessibility landscapes compared with cultures grown in basement membrane extracts, demonstrating improved physiological relevance for primary tumor modeling. When exposed to matrices derived from secondary organs, the organoids showed distinct growth phenotypes accompanied by rapid, tissue-dependent chromatin accessibility remodeling, indicating that ECM composition alone can reshape regulatory programs governing metastatic adaptation. Notably, liver-derived matrices selectively activated hepatocyte nuclear factor 4 alpha (HNF4A)-associated transcriptional networks and created a context-specific dependence on c-MET signaling for survival. Functional perturbation of HNF4A or c-MET signaling confirmed that both are required for organoid formation specifically within the liver matrix environment. Together, these findings establish tissue-derived matrix hydrogels as instructive bioactive materials that actively regulate cancer cell epigenetic states and reveal microenvironment-specific therapeutic vulnerabilities during early metastatic colonization.

Does Timing Matter? Age of First Mobile Phone Acquisition and Psychological Outcomes in Middle and Late Adolescence.

The age at which adolescents acquire their first smartphone has decreased markedly in recent years; however, evidence on its long-term effects on psychosocial adjustment remains limited. This study investigated whether age at first mobile phone acquisition is associated with psychosocial functioning in middle and late adolescence, including social integration and competence, emotion regulation difficulties, disordered eating behaviors and problematic social media use (PSMU). The sample comprised 1179 adolescents aged 15-17 years (53.8% female). Linear regression and generalized additive mixed models were used to examine both linear and nonlinear associations, adjusting for age, gender and school clustering. Earlier smartphone acquisition was linearly but weakly associated with greater emotion regulation difficulties, disordered eating and PSMU, even after adjustment for covariates. In contrast, associations with social integration and competence were nonlinear: acquiring a first smartphone between ages 6 and 10 or after age 13 was associated with lower social integration in adolescence, whereas acquisition between ages 11 and 13 was linked to higher social functioning. These findings suggest that the developmental timing of first smartphone access shows a modest association with subsequent psychosocial functioning during middle and late adolescence. Focusing on the timing of access, alongside other demographic and contextual factors, may contribute to a better understanding of digital influences on adolescent well-being.

Analysis of the Relationship between Early Clinical Factors and Glasgow Outcome Scale in Patients With Traumatic Brain Injury.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the association between early clinical factors and the Glasgow outcome scale (GOS) in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 98 TBI patients who underwent emergency surgery between January 2021 and January 2024. Based on GOS scores at 6 months post-surgery, patients were classified into a favorable outcome group (GOS ≥ 4, defined as moderate disability or good recovery, n = 58) and an unfavorable outcome group (GOS < 4, i.e., death, persistent vegetative state, or severe disability, n = 40). Baseline and early clinical parameters were compared between groups. Statistically significant variables from univariate analysis were entered into a multivariate logistic regression model to identify independent prognostic factors. RESULTS: Significant intergroup differences were observed in age, time from injury to surgery, bleeding site, midline shift, Glasgow coma scale (GCS) score at admission, blood glucose level, and D-dimer level (all p < 0.05). Multivariate analysis confirmed that age, time from injury to surgery, GCS score, blood glucose, and D-dimer level were independent predictors of GOS (all p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Early clinical factors, including age, time to surgery, GCS score, blood glucose, and D-dimer level, independently influence GOS in TBI patients. Time from injury to surgery emerged as a potentially modifiable factor in this cohort, suggesting that minimizing delays may improve outcomes.

Elucidation of the immunotoxicity of PEDOT: PSS on RAW264.7 macrophages by oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and NF-κB pathway activation.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) nanoparticles, widely used conductive polymers, pose environmental and health risks due to their nanoscale dispersion. However, the characteristics of PEDOT: PSS in aquatic systems and the underlying mechanisms of its toxicity in animal and cell models remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the toxicological effects of PEDOT: PSS nanoparticles on macrophages, with a focus on RAW 264.7 cells. After an acute exposure to PEDOT: PSS nanoparticles at different concentrations (5, 10, 20 μg/mL), we observed significant impairments in cell viability, proliferation, migration, adhesion, and phagocytosis, as well as morphological alterations. Concurrently, there was a marked upregulation of inflammatory markers, including reactive oxygen species (ROS), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), indicating the induction of oxidative stress and inflammation. Mechanistically, PEDOT: PSS nanoparticles activated the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway, a key regulator of inflammatory responses, suggesting that they may mediate inflammatory responses and cell damage via activation of the NF-κB signaling pathway. These findings reveal the toxic mechanism of PEDOT: PSS nanoparticles in macrophages and provide new insights into their biological safety implications.

A profile of suspected female homicide cases at the Johannesburg and Diepkloof Forensic Pathology Service Medico-legal Mortuaries for 2020-2022.

This study profiles suspected female homicide victims in Johannesburg, South Africa, during the COVID-19 period marked by socio-environmental changes from lockdown restrictions. Guided by the Socio-Ecological Model, a retrospective case series of 369 victims was reviewed using medico-legal mortuary records from Johannesburg and Diepkloof Forensic Pathology Service facilities. Descriptive analyses were conducted, supplemented by a chi-square test to assess whether distributions of causes of death among women differed between COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 periods. No statistically significant association was found, χ2 (6, N = 339) = 6.68, p = 0.35. Key findings highlight that Black, unemployed, unmarried women aged 21-40 were at greatest risk. Cause of death was established in 97.0% (358/369) of cases, with firearm injuries predominating (43.9%), followed by sharp‑force (24.5%) and blunt‑force trauma (13.1%). Approximately 90% of victims were suspected to have been killed by males, with half of deaths attributed to intimate partner violence. Homicide frequency decreased during strict lockdowns but rose as restrictions eased, suggesting that movement and alcohol controls may reduce risk. Despite temporary disturbance caused by COVID‑19 restrictions, the underlying risk profile of female homicide victims remained unchanged. These findings inform multi-level prevention and intervention strategies in South Africa.

Integrative analysis of transcriptome and DNA methylome dynamics during caudal fin regeneration in silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus).

Caudal fin regeneration in teleost fish is a complex, multi-stage process involving coordinated molecular and cellular changes. While the role of epigenetic regulation particularly DNA methylation has been studied in model freshwater species such as zebrafish, its contribution to regeneration in marine teleosts remains largely unexplored. In this study, we integrated transcriptomic and DNA methylomic data to characterize the temporal dynamics of gene expression and methylation during caudal fin regeneration in the silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus). Using RNA-sequencing and reduced representation bisulfite sequencing (RRBS) at three biologically critical time points 1, 3, and 7 days post-amputation (dpa), we characterized the spatiotemporal molecular landscape of caudal fin regeneration. These time points capture the key transitional phases of wound healing and inflammation (1 dpa), blastema formation and progenitor proliferation (3 dpa), and regenerative outgrowth with tissue remodeling (7 dpa), enabling robust detection of the major molecular programs underlying epimorphic regeneration. Concurrently, CG-methylome analysis identified thousands of dynamically changing differentially methylated regions (DMRs). A strong global inverse correlation was observed between promoter methylation and gene expression. Integrative analysis pinpointed key regeneration genes (fgf20a, msxb, sox9b) whose expression was associated with dynamic methylation changes in their promoters or gene bodies. We conclude that DNA methylation is a dynamic and key regulatory layer that acts in concert with transcriptional reprogramming to coordinate tissue regeneration, providing new insights into the epigenetic mechanisms underlying complex regenerative processes in teleosts.

Extreme Temperature and Incident Diabetes Risk Among Middle-Aged and Older Adults in China: A National Longitudinal Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The metabolic consequences of extreme temperature exposure in nondiabetic populations remain poorly understood. This study aimed to examine associations between heatwave and coldwave exposure and incident diabetes mellitus (DM) and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) in middle-aged and older Chinese adults. METHODS: A total of 1803 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study participants aged ≥45 years with normoglycemia at baseline were followed from Wave 1 (2011) to Wave 3 (2015). Eighteen extreme-temperature indicators were derived from city-level fifth-generation European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts atmospheric reanalysis data. Outcomes were classified according to American Diabetes Association criteria. Generalized linear mixed-effects models (GLMMs) were pooled across five imputed datasets, with Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons (α = 0.0028) and sensitivity analysis adjusting for individual follow-up duration. RESULTS: All nine heatwave indicators showed odds ratios (ORs) < 1.0 for DM and IGT. HT9 (≥97.5th percentile, ≥4 consecutive days) was the sole Bonferroni-significant result: OR = 0.845 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.802-0.890). Coldwave indicators showed no consistent associations. Age significantly modified the HT9 effect (P-interaction = 0.004): adults aged 65-84 showed a stronger inverse association (OR = 0.616) than those aged < 65 (OR = 0.921). CONCLUSION: Prolonged heatwave exposure was consistently associated with reduced diabetes risk, with pronounced age heterogeneity. Replication in larger prospective studies is warranted.

Proteomic responses of the oil palm pest Metisa plana (Psychidae) to farnesyl acetate exposure.

Metisa plana Walker (Lepidoptera: Psychidae) is a major defoliator of oil palm in Malaysia, causing substantial economic losses. Farnesyl acetate (FA), a sesquiterpenoid compound, has been proposed as a potential insecticidal agent against M. plana, yet its molecular impact on larval physiology remains poorly understood. Here, we employed label-free quantitative proteomics, functional enrichment analysis, and targeted transcript assessment to characterize the temporal proteomic response of M. plana larvae at 7 and 14 days after treatment (DAT) with FA. Principal component analysis revealed robust separation between treated and control samples at both time points, indicating sustained treatment-driven proteomic restructuring. Early exposure (7 DAT) elicited a heterogeneous response involving stress-associated proteins, redox enzymes, and cytoskeletal regulators, whereas later exposure (14 DAT) produced a consolidated profile characterized by metabolic reprogramming, downregulation of ribosomal proteins, induction of heat shock proteins, and enrichment of RNA surveillance and mitochondrial pathways. Targeted transcript analysis qualitatively supported proteomic trends for HSP83 and aldehyde dehydrogenase X, although limited amplification precluded quantitative inference. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that FA exposure drives a shift from acute proteomic perturbation toward a maintenance-oriented physiological state, prioritizing proteostasis, energy management, and stress adaptation over growth and development. This integrated molecular perspective provides mechanistic insight into the chronic effects of FA, highlighting its potential to suppress larval performance and informing the development of biorational, physiology-based pest management strategies in non-model insects.

Effects of exercise snacking on neuromuscular performance in insufficiently active adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of exercise snacking (ES) on neuromuscular performance in insufficiently active adults. METHODS: Six databases were searched from inception to July 17, 2026. Randomized controlled trials and non-randomized studies of interventions involving insufficiently active adults undertaking ES interventions were included. Outcomes were functional performance, muscular strength, and muscular power. A three-level random-effects meta-analysis was performed. Risk of bias was assessed with RoB 2 or ROBINS-I, and certainty of evidence was evaluated using GRADE. RESULTS: Nine studies (13 reports) involving 313 participants were included. In the primary three-level model, ES showed a small positive overall effect on neuromuscular performance (g = 0.37, 95% CI 0.16-0.58, p = 0.001), which remained supported under trial-clustered robust inference with small-sample adjustment. Domain-specific estimates for muscular power/velocity, functional performance, and muscular strength were positive but imprecise and were not statistically supported after small-sample robust adjustment. Robust moderator tests provided no evidence of between-subgroup differences, and the certainty of evidence was low for all outcomes. CONCLUSION: Current low-certainty evidence suggests that ES may produce a small improvement in overall neuromuscular performance. However, domain-specific effects remain uncertain because of the limited number of independent trials, and the overall prediction interval crossed zero, indicating uncertainty across future populations and settings. Larger, preregistered randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm these preliminary findings.

Mechanisms linking the gut microbiota to colorectal cancer development and progression.

Colorectal cancer remains a leading cause of global cancer mortality, with a concerning rise in early-onset cases driven by complex interactions between environmental exposures, lifestyle factors, and host genetics. Mounting evidence indicates that gut microbiota dysbiosis critically modulates this oncogenic process, acting as an active participant rather than a passive bystander. This review systematically synthesizes the dichotomous roles of the intestinal microbiome in colorectal tumorigenesis through the conceptual framework of the driver-passenger model. We discuss how early initiating driver bacteria, such as Polyketide synthase-positive Escherichia coli and enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis, compromise mucosal barriers, induce chronic mucosal inflammation, and inflict direct genomic instability. As the local tumor microenvironment undergoes profound metabolic remodeling, opportunistic passenger pathogens, notably Fusobacterium nucleatum, become enriched, further promoting cellular proliferation and facilitating tumor immune evasion. Conversely, protective commensals, exemplified by Clostridium butyricum and Streptococcus thermophilus, exert robust tumor-suppressive effects through multifaceted mechanisms. These beneficial microbes actively antagonize malignant progression by redirecting tumor metabolic fluxes toward oxidative stress, orchestrating deep epigenetic reprogramming, and degrading core oncoproteins to reverse chemoresistance. Transitioning from fundamental mechanisms to clinical application, we evaluate a comprehensive spectrum of microbiota-targeted interventions, encompassing non-invasive diagnostic biomarkers, fecal microbiota transplantation, engineered bacteria, phage therapy, and postbiotics. Finally, we critically address the formidable translational challenges associated with microbial heterogeneity, long-term safety, and regulatory standardization, aiming to provide a balanced perspective on integrating microbiome-based strategies into next-generation precision oncology for colorectal cancer.

Microbial diversity, functional activities, and safety risks in fermented tea: a comprehensive review.

Microbial fermented teas are gaining global popularity due to their unique sensory profiles and health benefits. The quality and safety of these products are governed by complex microbial ecosystems that orchestrate the biotransformation of tea leaf components. This review addresses a critical paradox in the field: the same microbial activities that generate desirable bioactive metabolites, such as theabrownins and organic acids, also create ecological niches for mycotoxigenic fungi, posing significant health risks from contaminants like ochratoxin A, citrinin, and aflatoxins. While extensive research has cataloged the microbial diversity in these systems, a comprehensive framework linking processing environments to microbial community assembly, functional outcomes, and quantifiable safety risks remains elusive. This review systematically bridges this gap by synthesizing current knowledge on the microbial consortia-dominated by Aspergillus, Penicillium, Bacillus, and Lactiplantibacillus species-that drive tea fermentation. We critically analyze their functional roles in enhancing flavor, bioactivity, and potential probiotic activity while simultaneously evaluating the mechanisms of mycotoxin production and accumulation. By integrating microbial ecology, biochemistry, and food safety, we propose a forward-looking perspective focused on transitioning the industry from traditional, spontaneous fermentation to modern, controlled biotechnological processes. This approach, centered on the use of defined starter cultures, predictive modeling, and active biocontrol strategies, provides a roadmap for ensuring the consistent quality and safety of fermented tea products, ultimately unlocking their full potential as high-quality functional foods.

Mitophagy-mediated ferroptosis involved in 2,5-hexanedione-induced neurotoxicity in rats.

n-Hexane, a widespread environmental and industrial pollutant, poses serious health risks, particularly neurotoxicity. Chronic exposure primarily induces sensorimotor neuropathy via its metabolite 2,5-hexanedione (HD), yet the mechanisms underlying HD-induced neuronal injury remain unclear. Recent evidence implicates ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death, in neurodegenerative processes. In this study, Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were exposed to HD to establish a neuropathy model. Ferroptosis involvement was assessed using the iron chelator deferoxamine (DFO) and the ferroptosis inhibitor Ferrostatin-1. The potential role of mitophagy in HD-induced ferroptosis was evaluated by monitoring mitophagy markers and by autophagy inhibition with chloroquine (CQ). In vitro, SH-SY5Y cells were transfected with PINK-1 siRNA to explore mitophagy-mediated regulation of ferroptosis. HD exposure led to iron accumulation, lipid peroxidation, mitochondrial abnormalities, and decreased GPX4 in rat spinal neurons. DFO or ferrostatin-1 treatment ameliorated these changes and preserved mitochondrial integrity. Mechanistic analyses revealed HD-induced activation of mitophagy, as shown by upregulation of Beclin-1, LC3II, Drp-1, and PINK-1, with concomitant downregulation of P62 in spinal mitochondria. CQ suppressed mitophagy, reduced iron deposition and lipid peroxidation, and improved motor function. Similarly, PINK-1 knockdown in SH-SY5Y cells mitigated HD-induced mitophagy and ferroptosis. These findings demonstrate that HD induces neuronal ferroptosis via mitophagy activation. Inhibition of ferroptosis or mitophagy effectively attenuates HD-induced neurotoxicity, suggesting potential therapeutic strategies to reduce neural damage from environmental n-hexane exposure.

Epitranscriptomic erasers in bivalves: Evolutionary divergence and species-specific transcriptional plasticity of the ALKBH family under acute thermal stress.

The AlkB homolog (ALKBH) family of Fe(II)/α-ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenases mediates nucleic acid demethylation, thereby governing RNA metabolism and genomic stability. Despite their pivotal roles in epitranscriptomic regulation across vertebrates, the evolutionary dynamics and functional significance of ALKBH proteins in bivalve mollusks remain largely unexplored. Here, we present a comprehensive phylogenomic analysis of 210 ALKBH genes identified across 35 bivalve species. Our analyses reveal a distinct evolutionary trajectory characterized by the lineage-specific loss of ALKBH4 and the restricted distribution of ALKBH5 to the Mytilidae family, contrasting sharply with vertebrate repertoires. Using the noble scallop (Chlamys nobilis) and Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) as model systems, we demonstrate that ALKBH genes exhibit conserved spatiotemporal expression patterns, with pronounced enrichment in gonadal tissues and during metamorphic transitions, implicating these enzymes in gametogenesis and larval development. Furthermore, comparative thermal stress experiments reveal divergent transcriptional plasticity: the subtropical scallop C. nobilis mounts rapid, transient induction of ALKBH1/2/6 under heat shock, whereas the eurythermal oyster C. gigas maintains sustained ALKBH3 expression, potentially underpinning its superior thermal tolerance. Conversely, cold stress elicits bimodal regulation in C. nobilis, with ALKBH1/2 upregulation contrasting with ALKBH6/7/8 suppression. These findings illuminate the functional diversification of bivalve ALKBH genes and their potential utility as molecular biomarkers for assessing developmental competence and thermal resilience in shellfish aquaculture.

Artificial neural network data fusion-mediated dual-mode sensor based on Fe3O4@PdIr for Salmonellatyphimurium detection in food.

Salmonella Typhimurium (S. typhimurium) is a major foodborne pathogen that poses a serious threat to public health. In this study, a colorimetric/electrochemical dual-mode biosensor assisted by artificial neural network (ANN) was developed for the sensitive detection of S. typhimurium. Fe3O4@PdIr nanocomposites with enhanced peroxidase-like activity and electrochemical performance were prepared and conjugated with an aptamer specific to S. typhimurium to obtain Fe3O4@PdIr-Apt. Through the sandwich binding of Fe3O4@PdIr-Apt and Apt to the target, the nanocomposites were attached to microplates or Au electrodes, thereby generating colorimetric and electrochemical signals. The ANN model deeply resolved the complex nonlinear relationship between the dual signals, enabling mutual correction and ultimately performing data fusion to output a single detection result, which significantly reduced the mean square error while improving detection sensitivity and reliability. This sensor exhibited a wide linear range of 2.7-2.7 × 108 CFU/mL and a low detection limit of 1.66 CFU/mL. Additionally, this method was successfully applied to the detection of S. typhimurium in pork and milk, with a recovery rate of 95.19% ∼ 104.07%. It indicated that the constructed sensor holds great practical potential for S. typhimurium detection.

Uncovering parental exposure risks of TCPP: Impaired development and metabolic homeostasis in zebrafish offspring.

As brominated flame retardants are phased out, tris (1‑chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP), a phosphorus-based flame retardant, has emerged as a prominent detectable flame retardant in the environment. However, TCPP has been found to exhibit endocrine-disrupting effects on organisms, raising significant safety concerns. In our study, we utilized the zebrafish model to explore the toxic effects of parental TCPP exposure on offspring and uncover its regulatory mechanisms through metabolomics analysis. Moreover, the impact on the nervous system and lipid metabolism was examined through behavioral analysis and specific staining. Our findings demonstrated that both embryonic and parental TCPP exposure induced developmental disorders in larvae, along with decreased locomotor activity and disordered lipid metabolism homeostasis. Parental exposure to TCPP, exhibiting stronger developmental toxicity than direct embryonic exposure, notably led to reductions in crucial energy substrates such as amino acids and carbohydrates. Meanwhile, embryonic TCPP exposure primarily affected the endogenous lipid-related metabolites including phospholipids, lipid-soluble vitamins, steroids and fatty acids, promoting lipid accumulation in larval liver and subcutaneous tissue. What's more, continuously parental and embryonic exposure showed the most pronounced effects on zebrafish development and metabolic regulation. Our study highlights the risk posed by parental exposure to TCPP on offspring zebrafish, underscoring the need for comprehensive consideration of the impact from parental exposure in pollutants regulation.
