Declining towns in the former USSR.

"The paper comprises an update of an earlier study...focused on towns with declining population during the 1959-1970 period. Based on recently published data on individual urban centers with 15,000 or more inhabitants reported in the 1979 and 1989 censuses, it identifies centers where population declined from 1970 to 1989. The study also assesses selected geographical aspects, economic functions, and size characteristics of such urban centers. Comparisons with data from the 1959-1970 period are made to arrive at a 30-year perspective."

[Population growth and urbanization in Brazil in the 1980s].

"The population of Brazil has undergone important demographic changes in the last decades. These were ignored by those in charge of public policies. This article describes these changes--decrease in the annual volume of births, aging of the population, decrease in family size, and in the population growth of large cities, and increasing of medium-sized cities in the country side--and discusses their effects on the demand [for] public services." Application of the population potential model in the structural regionalisation of Poland.

"The application of population potential in the research procedure employed to arrive at Poland's structural regionalisation allows three main tasks to be solved: (1) determining the interaction in the urban system, (2) establishing macroregional nodes, and (3) delimiting peripheral zones of macroregions. The configuration of the potential surface and membership functions indicates the spatial structuring of socio-economic reality at the level of population interaction."

The national settlement system of Italy at the beginning of the 1990s.

"The paper presents recent changes in the Italian settlement system and variations in urban hierarchical relations. Functional classification of towns and their new position compared with the situation at the beginning of [the] 1980s is...proposed in terms of three categories of cities, medium-sized towns and small towns. The analysis and verification attempted in this study have revealed a marked reduction in the number of small towns as well as shifts in functional characteristics within urban areas in Italy."
