[Study of the structure and metabolism of the rat thymus gland during long-term administration of tritium oxide in different doses].

During-3-month administration of tritium oxide (0.37, 0.925 and 1.85 MBq/g body weight) to rats one could observe the loss of the thymus weight, decrease in the concentration, content and production of DNA and RNA per organ, reduction of the molecular weight of single-stranded DNA, increase in the content of the salt-soluble polydeoxyribonucleotides, and activation of acidic DNAases. These changes were function of tritium dose daily administered to rats.

[Status of the endocrine function of the thymus gland in the normal and complicated course of pregnancy].

A total of 84 women with normal pregnancy and those with threatened abortions were examined, as were 28 healthy nonpregnant women, to estimate the function of the thymus. The findings evidence enhancement of the endocrine function of the thymus in pregnancy, this function being assessed from the thymic serum factor titer. The function activation is related to pregnancy course and is more marked in threatened abortion. Before labor the thymic serum factor titers are the highest and they persist high after spontaneous delivery. The biological sense of thymic hormonal function activation in pregnancy is discussed, as are the possible mechanisms of this phenomenon.

[Lesion of the thymus gland in infants caused by cytomegalovirus].

In the autopsy materials of 1972-1976, cytomegaly was diagnosed in 47 infants dying in the first year of life; two of them were found to have cytomegalovirusinvolvement of the thymus. The clinical course of the disease depended on the intensity of pathological lesions in organs and tissues associated with secondary infection. In the thymus, alongside with marked accidental involution, cytomegaloviral metamorphosis of the reticular epithelium and epithelium of Hassal bodies was found. Foci of calcinosis were observed in the parenchyma of the thymus. During the disease hypogammaglobulinemia was observed. A possible role of cytomegalovirus infection in the development of acquired immunodeficiency conditions in infants under one is suggested.

[Studies of the effects of BCG and Corynebacterium parvum vaccines in experimental infection of mice with influenza virus. Foot pad test, splenic indicator and histologic changes in the thymus gland, spleen and lymph nodes].

Evaluation of the influence of BCG and Coparvax on reticulo-endothelial system in mouse was performed. Mice were stimulated i.p. with BCG vaccine and Coparvax vaccine. Spleen index and histological changes in thymus, spleen and lymph nodes were evaluated after 14 days in mice vaccinated with BCG and after 7 days in mice vaccinated with Coparvax. Foot pad test was also performed by giving vaccine into three feet. Tuberculin was injected into mouse foot pad on the day 7th and 14th and a lysate of Coparvax vaccine on the day 7th. Spleen index and foot pad test showed higher values in mice vaccinated with Coparvax than with BCG. Histological changes of thymus, spleen, and lymph nodes showed morphological differences depending on the type of vaccine used. Both preparations were characterized by stimulating effect on reticuloendothelial system, which was much more pronounced after giving Coparvax vaccine.
