Pension coverage and benefits, 1972: findings from the retirement history sutdy.

This article, based on data from the Retirement History Study, examines coverage by an employee pension plan on the longest job and the extent to which covered workers received an employee pension upon retirement and the size of their benefits. It also examines the joint receipt of employee pension and OASDI benefits and the size of the combined benefits. Each of these pension variables is analyzed for differences by class of worker (private wage and salary or government), sex, and characteristics of the longest job (industry, occupation, tenure, recency of job, extent of employment, and annual earnings rate). The majority of completely retired individuals in their early to middle sixties in 1972 did not receive employee pension benefits in that year. Women employed in private industry on their longest job were the most disadvantaged in this regard. Even when they were fortunate enough to receive retirement benefits from employee pension plans, their benefits were substantially lower than those of men or of women employed in government.

Some determinants of temporal experience in the retired and its correlates.

The effects of physical health status, attitude toward retirement, and social class on temporal experience were studied in 70 male Ss, aged 52--74. A semistructured interview was utilized, and a content analysis by independent raters was performed on the resulting interview material. In general, it was found that chronic illness had a differential effect on experience, depending upon social class, for certain temporal variables. Among the healthy retirees it was also found that willingness to retire interacted with social class, and that blue collar workers who had resisted retirement resembled the chronically ill in terms of affect and temporal experience. The possibility for adjustment in retirement was linked to variations in temporal experience, and implications were drawn for preretirement intervention with specific social class target populations. Finally, psychological and behavioral consequences of variations in temporal experience were discussed, and the possibility of developing methods of altering temporal experience as a means of helping the elderly to adjust to life transitions was explored.

Impact of inflation on private pensions of retirees, 1970-74: findings from the retirement history study.

Many private pension plans have provided benefit increases or other forms of protection against inflation to their retired workers in recent years. This article, based on panel data from the Retirement History Study, examines the extent to which completely retired persons in their sixties benefited from these increases from 1970 to 1974. The private pension benefits of retirees rose slightly during the period, but their purchasing power declined sharply on account of the considerable growth in the inflation rate. Social security benefits, on the other hand, rose substantially more than the consumer price index. As a result, total retirement benefits largely maintained or nearly maintained their purchasing power.

Retirement against the demographic trend: more older people living longer, working less, and saving less.

The American population is aging rapidly and individuals are living longer. Yet Americans are saving less and older workers are leaving the labor force at younger and younger ages. The accelerated drop in labor force participation corresponds roughly to the introduction of Social Security and the adaptation of employer-provided pension plans. I have illustrated that Social Security and employer-provided pension plans provide substantial incentive to leave the labor force early. The quantitative effect of this inducement is illustrated by simulating the effects of changes in pension plan and Social Security provisions on the retirement decisions of employees in a large firm, who are covered by a typical defined benefit pension plan. Scheduled Social Security changes would have little effect on the retirement decisions of employees with a typical defined benefit pension plan like the one considered here. But if the pension plan provisions were changed to correspond to the Social Security changes, the effect would be very large. And, although not contemplated by current legislation; it is clear that an increase in the Social Security early retirement age would have a substantial effect on the early retirement rates of the large number of employees not covered by a pension plan.

Age of retirement legislation, March 1987.

This legislation provides that, under any collective agreement in which the retirement age for female workers is lower than that for male workers, women can choose to retire at any point between the different ages set for men and women. Passage of this legislation followed a decision of the National Labour Court that setting a different retirement age for men and women in a collective agreement did not constitute discrimination.

N-cadherin mediates nitric oxide-induced neurogenesis in young and retired breeder neurospheres.

Neurogenesis may contribute to functional recovery after neural injury. Nitric oxide donors such as DETA-NONOate promote functional recovery after stroke. However, the mechanisms underlying functional improvement have not been ascertained. We therefore investigated the effects of DETA-NONOate on neural progenitor/stem cell neurospheres derived from the subventricular zone from young and retired breeder rat brain. Subventricular zone cells were dissociated from normal young adult male Wistar rats (2-3 months old) and retired breeder rats (14 months old), treated with or without DETA-NONOate. Subventricular zone neurosphere formation, proliferation, telomerase activity, and Neurogenin 1 mRNA expression were significantly decreased and glial fibrillary acidic protein expression was significantly increased in subventricular zone neurospheres from retired breeder rats compared with young rats. Treatment of neurospheres with DETA-NONOate significantly decreased neurosphere formation and telomerase activity, and promoted neuronal differentiation and neurite outgrowth concomitantly with increased N-cadherin and beta-catenin mRNA expression in both young and old neurospheres. DETA-NONOate selectively increased Neurogenin 1 and decreased glial fibrillary acidic protein mRNA expression in retired breeder neurospheres. N-cadherin significantly increased Neurogenin 1 mRNA expression in young and old neurospheres. Anti-N-cadherin reversed DETA-NONOate-induced neurosphere adhesion, neuronal differentiation, neurite outgrowth, and beta-catenin mRNA expression. Our data indicate that age has a potent effect on the characteristics of subventricular zone neurospheres; neurospheres from young rats show significantly higher formation, proliferation and telomerase activity than older neurospheres. In contrast, older neurospheres exhibit significantly increased glial differentiation than young neurospheres. DETA-NONOate promotes neuronal differentiation and neurite outgrowth in both young and older neurospheres. The molecular mechanisms associated with the DETA-NONOate modulation of neurospheres from young and older animals as well age dependent effects of neurospheres appear to be controlled by N-cadherin and beta-catenin gene expression, which subsequently regulates the neuronal differentiating factor Neurogenin expression in both young and old neural progenitor cells.

Vascular endothelial growth factor mediates atorvastatin-induced mammalian achaete-scute homologue-1 gene expression and neuronal differentiation after stroke in retired breeder rats.

Neurogenesis declines with advancing age. The mammalian achaete-scute homologue-1 encodes a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor, which controls neuronal differentiation. In this study, we first tested whether atorvastatin treatment enhances neurological functional outcome and neuronal differentiation after stroke in retired breeder 12 month rats. Rats were subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion and treated with or without atorvastatin (3 mg/kg) for 7 days. Atorvastatin significantly increased expression of mammalian achaete-scute homologue-1, beta-tubulin III, and vascular endothelial growth factor in the ischemic brain, and concomitantly improved functional outcome compared with middle cerebral artery occlusion control rats. Increased neurogenesis significantly correlated with functional recovery after stroke. To further investigate the mechanisms of atorvastatin-induced neuronal differentiation, experiments were performed on neurospheres derived from retired breeder rat subventricular zone cells. Atorvastatin increased neuronal differentiation and upregulated vascular endothelial growth factor and mammalian achaete-scute homologue-1 gene expression in cultured neurospheres. Vascular endothelial growth factor-treated neurospheres significantly increased mammalian achaete-scute homologue-1 and beta-tubulin III expression. Inhibition of vascular endothelial growth factor decreased atorvastatin-induced mammalian achaete-scute homologue-1 and beta-tubulin III expression. These data indicate that atorvastatin increases neuronal differentiation in retired breeder rats. In addition, atorvastatin upregulation of vascular endothelial growth factor expression, influences mammalian achaete-scute homologue-1 transcription factor, which in turn, facilitates an increase in subventricular zone neuronal differentiation. These atorvastatin-mediated molecular events may contribute to the improved functional outcome in retired breeder rats subjected to stroke.

Modulation of the exercise and retirement effects by dietary fat intake in hamsters.

An experiment was conducted to determine the effects and interactions of exercise-retirement and dietary fat intake on body composition and hepatic lipogenic enzyme activities in hamsters. Forty-eight adult female hamsters were randomly allotted to eight groups of six each for a 40-d experiment. Exercise was in the form of voluntary wheel-running. Four groups served as either exercise or sedentary controls and were fed either a low or a high fat diet for 40 d, in a factorial fashion. Another four groups had access to exercise for 32 d and were then retired for 8 d. Of these four groups, two were fed either the low or high fat diet for the entire 40-d period; the other two were changed to the other diet on d 32. Results showed that compared to sedentary hamsters, exercise hamsters had greater body weight gain but less body fat content and hepatic lipogenic enzyme activities. Under both sedentary and exercise conditions, high fat-fed hamsters had lower hepatic lipogenic enzyme activities and less body fat content than low fat-fed hamsters. Upon retirement, high fat feeding led to a faster increase in body fat especially in previously high fat-fed hamsters. Results of this study suggest that dietary fat intake can significantly modulate the exercise and retirement effects with respect to body weight gain and body fat content.

Factors related to self-concept of elderly residing in a retirement center.

The purpose of this study was to explore the self-concept of elderly adults residing in retirement centers as well as its relationship to other variables, including function of activities of daily living (ADL), subjective well being, etc. Selected demographic attributes (sex, age, years of education etc.) were also examined for their relationship to self-concept. The subjects were a convenience sample of people aged 65 or older who were recruited from a retirement center in the south of Taiwan (N = 42), and a control group of elderly living with their family (N = 33). The Tennessee Self-Concept Scale (TSCS) was used to measure self-concept. The Multidimensional Functional Assessment Questionnaire- Chinese Version (MFAQ) was applied to measure the function of activities of daily living. A total of 37 subjects from the retirement center group and 28 subjects from the home group completed these questionnaires. The data were analyzed using SPSS/PC software version 10.0. After multiple linear regression analysis, the results showed that the elderly residing in the retirement center had significantly lower Personal Self and Family Self scores. The variables of ADL, sex and subjective well-being had effects on the total self-concept. Female elderly individuals also revealed significant higher scores than males in the subscales of Moral- Ethical, Family Self, Social Self, Identity, Satisfaction Self. These results suggest we should design appropriate programs to increase elderly people's interaction with others and establish new social networks for them which may enhance a sense of positive self-concept.

Exercise before puberty may confer residual benefits in bone density in adulthood: studies in active prepubertal and retired female gymnasts.

Exercise during growth may contribute to the prevention of osteoporosis by increasing peak bone mineral density (BMD). However, exercise during puberty may be associated with primary amenorrhea and low peak BMD, while exercise after puberty may be associated with secondary amenorrhea and bone loss. As growth before puberty is relatively sex hormone independent, are the prepubertal years the time during which exercise results in higher BMD? Are any benefits retained in adulthood? We measured areal BMD (g/cm2) by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in 45 active prepubertal female gymnasts aged 10.4 +/- 0.3 years (mean +/- SEM), 36 retired female gymnasts aged 25.0 +/- 0.9 years, and 50 controls. The results were expressed as a standardized deviation (SD) or Z score adjusted for bone age in prepubertal gymnasts and chronological age in retired gymnasts. In the cross-sectional analyses, areal BMD in the active prepubertal gymnasts was 0.7-1.9 SD higher at the weight-bearing sites than the predicted mean in controls (p < 0.01). The Z scores increased as the duration of training increased (r = 0.32-0.48, p ranging between <0.04 and <0.002). During 12 months, the increase in areal BMD (g/cm2/year) of the total body, spine, and legs in the active prepubertal gymnasts was 30-85% greater than in prepubertal controls (all p < 0.05). In the retired gymnasts, the areal BMD was 0.5-1.5 SD higher than the predicted mean in controls at all sites, except the skull (p ranging between <0.06 and <0.0001). There was no diminution across the 20 years since retirement (mean 8 +/- 1 years), despite the lower frequency and intensity of exercise. The prepubertal years are likely to be an opportune time for exercise to increase bone density. As residual benefits are maintained into adulthood, exercise before puberty may reduce fracture risk after menopause.

The impact of pituitary adenoma on morbidity. Increased sick leave and disability retirement in a cross-sectional analysis of Swedish national data.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify sick leave and medical retirement for the year 1989 in adults with a history of nonsecreting pituitary adenoma. DESIGN AND SETTING: A cross-sectional analysis of official Swedish data from 1989 was performed. Sick leave and disability pension data for these patients were obtained from the Swedish National Social Insurance Board, which also supplied information on sick leave taken by an age- and gender-matched control population of 5121 individuals. Uptake of disability pensions and the reasons for drawing these pensions in the study group were compared with national statistics. STUDY POPULATION: A group of 809 eligible adults with nonsecreting pituitary adenoma was identified from the national cancer registry. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES AND RESULTS: Almost a quarter of the patients with a history of pituitary adenoma had retired due to ill health (23.8%); this was twice the figure expected from national statistics (11.5%). Similar results were obtained when men and women were considered separately. Some patients (17%) had received disability pensions before the diagnosis of pituitary adenoma, but the majority (75%) retired on medical grounds at least 1 year after their diagnosis. The reasons for early retirement in the study group were largely related to the diagnosis of pituitary adenoma (e.g. neoplasm, endocrine disorders), but there was some evidence of an increase in the number of disability pensions awarded because of diseases of the nervous system and sensory organs. Patients with a history of pituitary adenoma took significantly more sick leave in 1989 than those in the control group (mean 40.2 vs 24.0 days), and this significant difference applied to both sexes. CONCLUSIONS: A cross-sectional analysis of Swedish national data from 1989 showed excess morbidity, relative to reference data, in patients with a history of nonsecreting pituitary adenoma. Suboptimal conventional hormone replacement therapy and untreated growth hormone deficiency might to some extent explain the increased morbidity found in the present study.

Histological changes, rhinoscopical findings and nickel concentration in plasma and urine in retired nickel workers.

Histological examination of nasal biopsy specimens, rhinoscopical evaluation and nickel analysis in plasma and urine were performed on 59 retired nickel workers. The histological characteristics were graded according to a numerical classification table. Workers with short employment and short retirement time had a significantly lower mean histological scores than those with long employment and long retirement. Thirteen persons (22%) showed epithelial dysplasia, possibly representing precancerous lesions. Also included in the material were four cases of nasal carcinoma. Presence of hyperplastic/polypoid nasal mucosa was inversely related to the duration of retirement, possibly reflecting gradual regression of the mucosal swelling after termination of the irritation. The nickel concentration in plasma and urine was significantly higher among former roasting/smelting workers than in former electrolysis and non-process workers. This is probably a consequence of the slow release of heavy soluble nickel compounds that have accumulated in the organism at the former place of work.

[The effect of the interval from dinner until retiring on the concentration of lithogenic substances during sleep].

The relationship between the interval from dinner until retiring and the concentration of various substances secreted into the urine during sleep was studied in 69 healthy men who had eaten the same meal. The specific gravity and the concentrations of creatinine, uric acid and magnesium in the morning spot urine were highest in subjects who had retired within 2 hours after dinner. The concentrations of calcium and oxalate in the morning spot urine were highest in those who had retired between 2 and 4 hours. The specific gravity and urinary concentrations of creatinine, uric acid and oxalate were markedly higher in those with the interval less than 4 hours than in those 4 hours or longer. The concentrations of calcium, magnesium and citrate were not significantly different between the two groups. From these results, we recommend that the interval from dinner until retiring be prolonged and fluid be drunk before going to bed to decrease the concentration of lithogenic substances during sleep.

[Cancer of the respiratory tract observed in workers having retired from a poison gas factory].

Okunojima, a small island in the Inland Sea of Japan, off the shore of Takehara city was notorious for the production of poison gases from 1927 to 1945. Of the gases produced there, yperite and lewisite were the most poisonous and caused severe residual damage. It has been ascertained by studies conducted to date that the retired workers of this poison gas factory have a high risk of various types of malignant tumors including cancers of the respiratory tract. Such cancers observed in the retired workers from the poison gas factory are characterized by the following clinical features. Cancers are mainly central-type tumors with the site of development distributed from the airway to the hilar region and histologically, squamous and undifferentiated cell carcinoma predominate. Recently, the occurrence of malignant tumors has been discussed in relation to suppressed immune competence. Such disturbance of the immunological surveillance system seems to induce malignant changes of normal cells. On the other hand, we have demonstrated that the retired workers often showed impaired immunity. Therefore we considered that potentiation of immunity might possibly prevent the occurrence of malignant tumors and we took steps to enhance the immune competence of the retired workers with N-CWS. Its effect in preventing carcinogenesis will be shown in the near future.

Federal Employees' Retirement System Act of 1986.

In June, President Reagan signed the Federal Employees' Retirement System Act of 1986 (Public Law 99-335), which establishes the Federal Employees' Retirement System (FERS) for employees hired after December 31, 1983. The program, which goes into effect on January 1, 1987, features a defined benefit retirement plan to augment mandatory coverage under social security. It also permits FERS participants to contribute up to 10 percent of their earnings, on a tax-deferred basis, to a thrift savings plan, with partial matching by the Government. This article describes the provisions of the new system, including survivor annuities and disability benefits. It also explains how employees covered under the Civil Service Retirement System may freeze their earned benefits under that program and transfer to FERS during the period July-December 1987.

Income of new retired workers by age at first benefit receipt: findings from the New Beneficiary Survey.

Using data from the New Beneficiary Survey (NBS) of the Social Security Administration (SSA), this article examines how income sources and total monthly income received by newly retired social security beneficiaries vary with the age at which the first benefit check was received. The NBS respondents who received a first benefit at age 65 or older were better off economically than were those who received a first benefit at ages 62-64. At the time of the interview, 18-30 months after receiving a first benefit, these older beneficiaries had higher levels of total income and were more likely to have income from earnings and assets. Pension receipt rates did not vary by the age at which the first social security benefit was received except for married women retired workers, for whom the rate was higher at the older ages. The largest proportion of aggregate income (slightly more than one-third) was derived from social security benefits. More than 90 percent of the NBS Medicare-only respondents--a sample of nonbeneficiaries who were eligible for monthly cash benefits but had established their entitlement only for the purpose of enrolling in the Medicare program--reported earnings income. They had lower rates of pension receipt and higher rates of asset income receipt than the retired workers. The Medicare-only respondents had substantially higher incomes than did retired workers, and most of their aggregate income was from earnings. The NBS retirees were generally in better financial condition than a group of social security beneficiaries aged 65 or older from all benefit categories in the Current Population Survey Income Supplement with whom they were compared.

The retired breeder rat as a new model for antiplatelet drug discovery.

Spontaneous circulating platelet aggregates were observed in male retired breeder rats but in nonbred males of the same age and strain. Fasting serum lipid, platelet serotonin, and platelet rich plasma cyclic guanosine monophosphate levels were similar in retired breeders and nonbred rats. The in vitro response of platelets from retired breeder and nonbred rats to adenosine diphosphate and collagen were also similar. Administration of prostaglandin E1 and antiplatelet drugs (acetylsalicylic acid, sulfinpyrazone, and dipyridamole) reduced the number of circulating platelet aggregates in the breeder rats. It was concluded that the retired breeder rat may be a useful model for identification of new anti-platelet drugs.
