Relational factors in understanding satisfaction in the lasting relationships of same sex and heterosexual couples.

Satisfying relationships are important to the well-being of individuals and families. Because of increased longevity, many couples are staying together for extended periods of time. Thus, it is valuable to understand the factors that contribute to a sense of satisfaction among partners in lasting relationships. Relatively little attention has been paid in the research literature to relationships among older couples who have remained together for many years. Even less attention has been paid to the lasting relationships of couples of color and to gay male and lesbian couples. This paper focuses on understanding the factors that contribute to satisfaction of partners in the long-term relationships of a purposive sample of heterosexual and same-sex couples. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with 216 partners in 108 relationships that had lasted an average of 30 years. Using logistic regression analysis, two factors were identified as predictive of satisfaction during the recent years of these relationships: containment of relational conflict and psychologically intimate communication between partners. Based on these findings, a theoretical model for understanding satisfaction in lasting relationships is discussed.

Personality, attachment and sexuality related to dating relationship outcomes: contrasting three perspectives on personal attribute interaction.

Although people can bring personal attributes to their relationships that affect how satisfying and enduring those relationships are, it is more often personal attribute interaction that directly determines romantic relationship outcomes. In this study, three general perspectives on personal attribute interaction-similarity, complementarity and exchange perspectives-were contrasted empirically in their ability to predict dating relationship outcomes. Based on questionnaires completed by a sample of 44 heterosexual dating couples, feelings of relationship satisfaction were most closely associated with the interaction of socially valuable attributes, generally supporting the exchange perspective. Similarity of personal attributes was also connected with relationship satisfaction; however, this association was in the negative direction. That is, couples with dissimilar personality traits, attachment styles and sexual strategies were significantly more satisfied with their dating relationships. Complementarity of personal attributes had no link to satisfaction, but complementary couples experienced significantly higher ratings of relationship commitment, especially couples with complementary personalities. Discussion focused on the differences between personal attribute connections with romantic satisfaction and commitment and on the limitations of the present study.

The effects of relationship aversive female partner behavior on attributions and physiological reactivity of verbally aggressive and non-aggressive males.

The present study assessed the effects of aversive female partner behavior on cognitive attributions and physiological reactivity in verbally aggressive and non-aggressive college males (N = 39). Participants were presented four audiotaped vignettes which depicted hypothetical dating situations in which the female's behavior was relationship aversive or non-relationship aversive. Participants' physiological reactivity (i.e., systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and heart rate) was obtained before and after hearing each vignette. Attributional responses were obtained following the presentation of all vignettes. Relationship aversive partner behavior was expected to produce greater increases in attributional and physiological reactivity than non-relationship aversive partner behavior. Additionally, verbally aggressive males were expected to demonstrate greater negative intent and responsibility attributions and evidence greater physiological reactivity for situations involving relationship aversive partner behavior than were non-aggressive males. As hypothesized, results showed that relationship aversive partner behavior produced greater increases in systolic and diastolic blood pressure than did non-relationship aversive partner behavior. Results also showed that verbally aggressive males evidenced significantly greater negative attributions to relationship aversive partner behavior than did non-aggressive males. The potential interaction between physiological reactivity and attributions in explaining males' verbally aggressive behavior toward their female partners is discussed.

Associative interaction: joint control of key pecking by stimulus-reinforcer and response-reinforcer relationships.

The joint control of rate of key pecking in pigeons by stimulus-reinforcer and response-reinforcer relationships was studied in the context of a two-component multiple schedule of reinforcement. Food presentation was always associated with one component and extinction with the other. The stimulus-reinforcer relationship was manipulated by varying the relative durations of the two components. In the food-presentation component, a fixed rate of reinforcement, independent of rate of responding, was generated by a schedule referred to as "T*". One aspect of the response-reinforcer relationship, contiguity, was manipulated by varying the percentage of delayed reinforcers. With the multiple T* extinction schedule, stimulus-reinforcer and response-reinforcer relationships could be varied independently of one another. Rate of key pecking was sensitive to manipulations of both relationships. However, significant differential effects due to either the stimulus-reinforcer or response-reinforcer relationship were obtained only when the other relationship was weak: stimulus-reinforcer and response-reinforcer relationships interacted in the joint control of responding.

Health care access among individuals involved in same-sex relationships.

OBJECTIVES: We used data from the National Health Interview Survey to compare health care access among individuals involved in same-sex versus opposite-sex relationships. METHODS: We conducted descriptive and logistic regression analyses from pooled data on 614 individuals in same-sex relationships and 93418 individuals in opposite-sex relationships. RESULTS: Women in same-sex relationships (adjusted odds ratio [OR]=0.60; 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.39, 0.92) were significantly less likely than women in opposite-sex relationships to have health insurance coverage, to have seen a medical provider in the previous 12 months (OR=0.66; 95% CI=0.46, 0.95), and to have a usual source of health care (OR=0.50; 95% CI=0.35, 0.71); they were more likely to have unmet medical needs as a result of cost issues (OR=1.85; 95% CI=1.16, 2.96). In contrast, health care access among men in same-sex relationships was equivalent to or greater than that among men in opposite-sex relationships. CONCLUSIONS: In this study involving a nationwide probability sample, we found some important differences in access to health care between individuals in same-sex and opposite-sex relationships, particularly women.

Sex differences and interpersonal relationships: a cross-sectional sample in the U.S. and India.

This study introduces a methodology for exploring sex differences and life span patterns in a small sample for the purpose of generating hypotheses concerning the frequency and kinds of relationships people identify as important. Sixty-two participants from the United States and India, ranging in age from nineteen to seventy-five were interviewed as part of a study on ego and moral development. These open-ended, semistructured interviews yielded information on relationships that was subsequently coded for analysis. Sex differences were found in the number of relationships mentioned, with females mentioning a higher number of relationships than males. Life span patterns regarding the number of relationships mentioned were different for men and women between ages nineteen to thirty-one, with women naming more relationships. At age thirty-five there was a convergence in the number of relationships mentioned by both sexes. This age also was the low point in the number of relationships mentioned by both sexes, with later life ages.

Links between family relationships and best friendships in the United States and Japan.

This study was designed to examine associations between family relationship quality and friendship quality in the United States and Japan using surveys of representative samples of individuals ranging in age from 13 to 93 in the United States (n = 1498) and Japan (n = 1641). Associations between family relationships and friendships were stronger and more pervasive in Japan than in the United States. In the United States, there was some evidence that having higher quality family relationships was associated with having higher quality friendships; in Japan, there was similar evidence for consistency in quality across relationships, as well as evidence that qualities lacking in one relationship were sometimes present in another. Gender and age did not moderate the associations between family relationship and friendship quality in either country. These findings extend into adulthood work that has previously focused on family relationships and friendships of children and suggest cultural differences in patterns of association between family relationships and friendships.

Influence of partner relationship on sexuality after subtotal hysterectomy.

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to address the question of the importance of a partner relationship with regards to sexuality before and after hysterectomy. STUDY DESIGN: One hundred and four women were interviewed before and after hysterectomy. Sexual desire, activity, satisfaction and dysfunction were compared between women without, with a poor, and with a good partner relationship. The difference in predictive value of preoperative sexuality for postoperative sexuality for the groups was estimated with a multiple regression analysis method (LISREL). RESULTS: Improved sexuality, one year after hysterectomy, was experienced by 61% of women with a good partner relationship, by 17% of those with a poor relationship but no improvement was seen in women who had no regular partner relationship. When influence of preoperative frequency of sexual desire, activity, satisfaction and dysfunction on postoperative sexuality was studied, orgasmic capacity was a better predictor for women with poor or ambivalent relationship than for women with good partner relationships. CONCLUSION: Women with no or ambivalent partner relationship are more at risk for deterioration of sexuality after hysterectomy.

Attaching a new understanding to the patient-physician relationship in family practice.

BACKGROUND: As a result of continuity of care with patients and their families, family physicians are uniquely poised to form enduring clinical relationships with their patients. The degree of collaboration in and satisfaction with the patient-provider alliance has been shown to have important implications for treatment outcomes across a range of medical problems. Providing optimal care can require family physicians to appreciate the sequelae of having clinically relevant aspects of past relationships emerge in the health care relationship, both in their patients and in themselves. A conceptual model is essential to assist in recognizing these key aspects. METHODS: A literature search was conducted using MEDLINE. Key words entered were "illness" and "attachment theory." Thirty-five English-only articles appeared from which further relevant references were gathered. RESULTS: Attachment theory serves as a useful model for highlighting important features of physician-patient relationships, which can affect treatment outcome in the family practice setting. It posits that everyone has an innate need to form strong attachment bonds to their earliest caregivers. To ensure survival, the child adapts its bonding to the caregiver's attachment style. With time, the maturing person develops a style of relating in subsequent caregiving relationships based on these early, and to some extent later, close relationships. Insecure attachment styles that can develop--dismissing, preoccupied, and fearful--have been shown to affect the clinical relationship and medical treatment outcomes often in important and predictable ways. CONCLUSION: Family physicians can more easily adopt an understanding, compassionate, and flexible treatment stance by recognizing patients' unique attachment relationship patterns, thereby improving medical treatment outcome.

Unwanted childbearing, health, and mother-child relationships.

This paper investigates the relationships among unwanted childbearing, health, and mother-child relationships. We hypothesize that unwanted childbearing affects mother-child relationships in part because of the physical and mental health consequences of unwanted childbearing. Impaired mental health hampers women's interaction with their infants, and these poor neonatal relationships translate into poor mother-adult child relationships. Using the Intergenerational Panel Study of Mothers and Children--a 31-year longitudinal survey of a probability sample of 1,113 mother-child pairs begun in 1961--we demonstrate that mothers with unwanted births have lower quality relationships with their children from late adolescence (age 18) throughout early adulthood (ages 23 and 31). Furthermore, these lower quality relationships are not limited to the child born as a result of the unwanted pregnancy; all the children in the family suffer. Using the 1987-88 wave of the National Survey of Families and Households, a survey of a national probability sample of U.S. households, we show that mothers with unwanted births suffer from higher levels of depression and lower levels of happiness. We also demonstrate that they spank their young children more and spend less leisure time with them. We conclude that experiencing unwanted childbearing reduces the time and attention that mothers give their young children and that these early mother-child interactions set the stage for long-term, lower quality relationships.

MyHC II content in the vastus lateralis m. quadricipitis femoris is positively correlated with the magnitude of the non-linear increase in the VO2 / power output relationship in humans.

In this study we have examined the relationship between the content of different isoforms of MyHC in the vastus lateralis m. quadricipitis femoris and the VO2 / power output relationship during incremental cycling exercise. Twenty-one male subjects: aged 24.0 +/- 2.5 years, body mass 73.0 +/- 7.2 kg, height 179 +/- 5 cm, BMI 22.78 +/- 1.84 kg x m(-2), VO2(max) 3697 +/- 390 ml x min(-1), 50.9 +/- 5.2 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1), participated in this experiment. The subjects performed an incremental exercise test until exhaustion. The exercise test started at power output of 30 W, followed by an increase amounting to 30 W every 3 minutes. The pedalling rate was maintained at 60 rev x min(-1). Gas exchange variables were measured continuously using breath-by-breath system Oxycon Jaeger. At the end of each step blood samples were taken for lactate concentration. Muscle biopsy samples taken from the vastus lateralis m. quadricipitis femoris, using the Bergstrom needle, were analysed for the content of different MyHC (I, IIa, IIx) using SDS-PAGE and Western blotting. The pre-exercise VO2, as a mean value of six-minute measurements, expressed both in ml x min(-1), and in ml x kg(-1) x min(-1), was positively correlated with the content of MyHC II in the vastus lateralis (p < 0.01). We have also found that the pre-exercise values of VO2 in the group of subjects with a high proportion of MyHC II (59.9 +/- 11.2 %) were significantly higher (p < 0.02, when VO2 was expressed in ml x min(-1), and p < 0.01 when VO2 was expressed in ml x kg(-1) x min(-1)) than in the group with low content of MyHC II (27.5 +/- 6.0 %) in the vastus lateralis. Moreover, we have found a significant negative correlation (r = -0.562, p < 0.01) between the slope in the VO2/PO relationship below the lactate threshold (LT) and the content of MyHC IIa in the vastus lateralis. The most interesting finding of our study was that the magnitude of the non-linear increase in the VO2 / power output relationship present above the LT was positively correlated ( r = 0.510, p < 0.02) with the content of MyHC II in the vastus lateralis. Our results show, that there is no simple relationship between the content of different types of MyHC in the vastus lateralis and the oxygen cost of work during incremental exercise test. Individuals with a high content of MyHC II in the vastus lateralis m. quadricipitisfemoris consume more oxygen in the pre-exercise conditions than subjects with a low content of MyHC II in their muscles. Subjects with a high content of MyHC II require a smaller increase in VO2 for maintaining a linear increase in power output up to the lactate threshold (lower slope in this relationship), but after exceeding the LT, they consume more oxygen above that expected from the linear relationship below the LT, than the subjects with a low content of MyHC II in their muscles. Therefore, non-linear increase in the VO2 / power output relationship, present above the LT, is more pronounced in subjects with a higher content of MyHC II in the vastus lateralis m. quadricipitis femoris.

[The relationship of lingua and uvula in OSAS].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the relationship between lingual base and uvula, the relationship between lingua and jaw dentition in normal adults, snorers and patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and to study the difference of the relationships among them. METHOD: 21 patients with OSAS, 25 snorer and 30 normal adults were included in the study. The relationship between lingua and uvula and the relationship between lingual base and jaw dentition were observed. The difference of the relationships among the OSAS patients, snorers and normal adults were studied. RESULT: Among the OSAS patients, snorer and normal adults, there are obviously difference in the relationship between lingua and uvula and the relationships between lingual base and jaw dentition. In normal adults, the lingua below to jaw dentition and the uvula is visible at opening of mouth; in snorers, the lingua match the jaw dentition and the uvula is visible at pronunciation; in OSAS patients, the lingua tower above the jaw dentition and the uvula is sightless at pronunciation. CONCLUSION: The study suggests that the enlarge of lingua and uvula be the one of etiology of OSAS.

The patient-physician relationship, primary care attributes, and preventive services.

BACKGROUND: The importance of a sustained relationship between patients and physicians is a defining characteristic of family medicine. This study examined whether there is an association among the length of the patient-physician relationship, various attributes of primary care, and the delivery of clinical preventive services to Medicare beneficiaries. METHODS: The data source for this study was the 1993 Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey. Primary care attribute scales were developed by conducting a factor analysis of 17 survey questions. Three clinical preventive services were measured as outcomes: influenza vaccination, mammography, and an eye examination for diabetics. Path analyses were used to test the relationships between length of relationship, primary care attributes, and delivery of clinical preventive services. RESULTS: As the length of the relationship increased, scores on communication, accumulated knowledge of the patient by the physician, and trust all improved. Length of relationship and communication predicted accumulated knowledge of the patient by the physician, accumulated knowledge predicted trust, and trust predicted delivery of preventive services. CONCLUSIONS: Among elderly Medicare beneficiaries, the ability to develop a sustained relationship with a provider is related to the realization of other important attributes of primary care. Trust was associated with delivery of important clinical preventive services. Efforts should be made to protect the ability of patients and physicians to sustain a relationship over time.

Homicide victim/offender relationship in Florida Medical Examiner District 8.

This study examined the correlations between victim/offender relationship and three variables: motive, weapon choice, and number of injuries inflicted. Empirical relationship and motive categories were used. The sample consisted of 57 intentional homicide cases from Florida Medical Examiner District 8 between the years 1992 and 1996. Relationships were divided into primary and secondary categories. Primary relationships included intimates, relatives, and friends; secondary relationships included acquaintances and strangers. Motives were classified as romantic dispute, argument/conflict, revenge, or felony type; weapons as firearm or contact; and number of injuries inflicted as single or multiple. A significant correlation was found between victim/offender relationship and homicide motive; however, the revenge and felony type motive categories did not differ. Unexpectedly, no correlation was found between victim/offender relationship and either weapon choice or number of injuries inflicted. Further study is needed of the interactions between homicide victim/offender relationship and motive, weapon selection, and number of injuries inflicted.

Comparing associative relationships among equivalent concepts across ontologies.

Methods for comparing associative relationships across ontologies often rely solely on lexical similarity between the names of the relationships, which may lead to missed matches and inaccurate matches. In this paper, we propose a novel method based on the analysis of paths between equivalent concepts across ontologies. Patterns of relationships are identified for each associative relationship. The most frequent patterns indicate a correspondence between an associative relationship in one ontology and one relationship (or combination thereof) in the other. We applied this method to two ontologies of anatomy. Our method was able to identify the correspondence between relationships even in the absence of lexical similarity between relationship names. The various types of matches identified are discussed as well as the application of this method to detecting inconsistencies across the ontologies.

[Stability of molar relationship after orthodontic treatment in Class II division 1 malocclusions treated by extraction].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the changes of occlusal relationship in posterior teeth among the pre-treatment, post-treatment, and to analyze some possible factors which may relate to the relapse of posterior occlusal relationship. METHODS: 29 finishing Class II division 1 cases treated by extraction with full records selected were included. The sample consists of 12 males, 17 females. The follow-up lateral head films and study casts were taken at least 2 years after orthodontic treatment. The cephalograms were measured by computerized program and the study casts measured by caliper. RESULTS: Improvements of molar relationship were shown during treatment and a little bit changes during follow-up. During the treatment, the amount of mesial movement of the lower molars was more than the upper molars in dental Class II malocclusion and the amount was similar between upper and lower molars in skeletal Class II malocclusion although the ANB angle decreased significantly. During the follow-up stage, the movement tendency between upper and lower molars was reversed. The sagittal growth pattern of mandible and irregularity of upper incisors were nearly correlated with the relapse of molar relationship. CONCLUSION: The stability of molar relationship is acceptable during the follow-up stage in Class II malocclusion. The improvement of molar relationship depends on the difference of mesial movements between upper and lower molars in dental Class II malocclusion. However, in skeletal Class II malocclusion the improvement of jaw relationship does the effect. The positive growth of mandible and crowding of upper incisors may affect the relapse of molar relationship.

[How children show positive and negative relationships on their drawings].

This study analyses, whether pictures of children showing a positive relationship are significantly different from those showing a negative one with respect to several criteria. The study involved a random selection of 45 children aged 4;6 to 11;6 years. The children painted a picture with themselves and a person they liked and a picture of themselves with someone they disliked. For the most part, the children drew pictures of themselves with peers both with respect to positive as well as negative images. In an interview afterwards, the children specified the criteria in their drawings by which the quality of the particular relationship can be identified. Positive and negative relationship paintings differ in the character of activity described. The sun as an element in children's paintings is painted not more frequent on positive compared to negative pictures. The colour black is used more often in the drawings signifying negative relationships. While girls used more colour in negative relationship drawings, boys used more colour in the positive ones. There was no significant difference in the use of favourite colours and decorative elements between the two groups. Only in negative relationship drawings people were looking away from each other. Smiling individuals were more common in the positive relationship pictures and in pictures painted by the 6 to 8 year olds. A greater distance between the individuals emerged on negative relationship drawings of the girls.

Aspects of the analytic relationship.

In this article the analysand-analyst relationship is investigated from the classical and from the post-classical point of view. This leads to the distinction of four fundamental aspects of the analytic relationship: the realistic relationship, the working relationship, the transference relationship, and the primary relationship. Similarities and differences between these various aspects of the analytic relationship are discussed. Examples of confusion about the aspects are given. Disagreement about the issue is mentioned. Emphasis is laid on one of the four aspects: the primary relationship. Its importance in ordinary psychoanalysis has not received the attention it deserves.
