Corrective social interaction therapy: role modeling.

This paper describes an experimental clinical approach to the problem child and his family, in which parents are trained to provide corrective social interaction experiences for the child. Negative interaction patterns are modified by teaching specific techniques of expressing warmth. Results of a pilot study indicate the technique is effective in working with immature and antisocial children who are hospitalized.

Soteria: Evaluation of a home-based treatment for schizophrenia.

Data are reported from an ongoing study comparing outcome in two groups of young, first-admission schizophrenics - one receiving "usual" treatment (including drugs) on the wards of a good community mental health center, the other being treated by a non-professional staff (usually without phenothiazines) in a small home-like facility in the community. Six-month and one-year outcome data show few differences in symptoms between the two groups, but three measures of psychosocial functioning significantly favor the experimental group.

The interpretation of posture through an alternative methodology to role play.

The purpose of this experiment was to develop a methodology to investigate the postural expression of different emotions and attitudes using a technique which avoided the artificiality implicit in the use of a role play design. Subjects were asked to categorize tape-recorded extracts as either funny, sad, interesting or boring and to rate them in order of intensity. The posture displayed when listening to the recordings were then analysed according to these ratings, the whole interview being recorded on videotape without the subject's knowledge. Results showed distinctive postures for all four categories, such as dropping the head for sadness and leaning the head on one hand for boredom, thus providing empirical support for the utility of this methodology as a way of obtaining observations of non-verbal cues under controlled conditions without inducing any artificial self-consciousness in the subjects.

Psychiatric nurse as therapist.

Under supervision five nurse-therapists have treated phobic patients as successfully as have psychiatrists and psychologists using similar psychological treatments in comparable psychiatric populations. Nurses have also had good results in other neurotic disorders. Intensive training is required. Nurse-therapists find their work rewarding, but the present Salmon gradings make no provision for their advancement should they retain their clinical function. Results suggest that the use of selected psychiatric nurses as skilled therapists can ease the current critical shortage of treatment personnel in psychiatry.
