Philatelic introduction to the history of anatomy.

Representative postage stamps reproduced here provide an idea of the scope available for introducing the history of human anatomy. Included are ancient Greek pioneers, the reformer of human anatomy (Vesalius), the discoverer of the circulation of the blood (Harvey), the compound microscope, and well-known names in histology, neurohistology, and topographical anatomy.

Nikola Tesla: the man behind the magnetic field unit.

The magnetic field strength of both the magnet and gradient coils used in MR imaging equipment is measured in Tesla units, which are named for Nikola Tesla. This article presents the life and achievements of this Serbian-American inventor and researcher who discovered the rotating magnetic field, the basis of most alternating-current machinery. Nikola Tesla had 700 patents in the United States and Europe that covered every aspect of science and technology. Tesla's discoveries include the Tesla coil, AC electrical conduction, improved lighting, newer forms of turbine engines, robotics, fluorescent light, wireless transmission of electrical energy, radio, remote control, discovery of cosmic radio waves, and the use of the ionosphere for scientific purposes. He was a genius whose discoveries had a pivotal role in advancing us into the modern era.

Jacobus Schroeder van der Kolk (1797-1862): his resistance against materialism.

Schroeder van der Kolk is regarded as the founder of Dutch psychiatry and neurology. This paper describes his vitalistic views on the relation between body and soul, as formulated by him in a series of lectures. These lectures were intended to counteract the materialistic tendencies of some of Schroeder van der Kolk's French and German contemporaries. It is argued that Schroeder van der Kolk can be regarded as the transition in Holland from the "Naturphilosophie" approach to the modern experimental approach in physiology.

Some famous persons with visual problems as shown on postage stamps.

A number of persons important in all fields of human endeavor became blind or were born blind. The reason for the loss of vision varies a great deal, but many of them continued a productive life and contributed to the welfare and advancement of mankind. It is also surprising how many famous people lost one eye or lost nearly all vision in one eye. These were not only soldiers and warriors exposed to accidental traumas, but also writers, scientists and even physicians.

A sensitive and simple assay of saliva on stamps.

Identification of saliva on stamps or envelope flaps remains yet a not widely studied problem. In most forensic laboratories it is seldom carried out, but this fact does not reduce the importance of the assay. Most authors consider amylase a sufficiently specific marker of the presence of saliva; really, the only other human body fluid that contains high amounts of this enzyme is the pancreatic juice (and therefore feces). Here we present a simple and sensitive assay for the determination of alpha-amylase that uses a commercially available and well-known substrate. It is hydrolyzed by amylase with the production of soluble blue fragments, that can be measured by photometry, obtaining objective results. The presented assay identifies 1 X 10(-6) diluted saliva or that present on 0.5 mg of a stamp; 16-year-old samples can also be identified. Intra-assay and day-to-day CV resulted in 10.8% and 13.7%, respectively. Owing to the high sensitivity of the test, handling samples or reagents can introduce contamination with saliva traces, giving false-positive results. Addition of EDTA 0.1 mol/l to the incubation mixture, lowering the sensitivity to 1 X 10(-3) diluted saliva, overcomes this problem.
