Based on the theory of co-evolution between plants and phytophagous insects, the repellent and antifeedant effect of secondary metabolites of non-host plants on diamondback moth(DBM) Plutella xylostella was studied, aimed at finding out the oviposition repellents and antifeedants of insect pests. When the ethanol extracts(Etho Exts) of Bauhinia variegata, Eucalyptus tereticornis, Euphorbia hirta, Duranta repens, Zanthoxylum bungeanum, Magnolia grandiflora, and Nicotiana tabacum were applied respectively, the oviposition repellent rates were all over 80.00%; while after forty-eight hours treatment with the Etho Exts of Euphorbia pulcherrima, Broussonetia papyrifera, Artemisia argyi, Camellia oleifera, Salix babylonica, Euphorbia hirta, Bauhinia variegata, and Setaria viridisa, the antifeedant rates of DBM larvae were all more than 80.00%.

The repellency of N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (deet) to Triatoma infestans (Klug) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) was evaluated using third-instar nymphs and a video tracking technique. Three experimental designs were used: (a) the test arena floor was divided into two halves, only one of which was treated with deet; (b) the arena floor was divided into an inner circle and an outer ring, only the latter treated with deet; (c) half of the test arena was covered by a filter paper roof treated with deet (out of reach of the nymphs). In all three types of experiment, a repellent effect was demonstrated proportional to the dose of deet. When a host (pigeon) was shielded by deet-treated gauze, the rate of blood-feeding by the nymphs was inhibited. Topical pre-treatment of the nymphs with N-ethylmaleimide, to block chemoreception, inhibited the repellency.
During 1962 experiments on disinsection of aircraft passenger cabins at "blocks away" (i.e., after the doors have been closed following embarkation but before take-off) were conducted with single-use, disposable aerosol dispensers in various types of commercial aircraft operating in the tropics. The favourable results of these trials and of previous trials in temperate zones indicate that this method is suitable as a standard procedure for aircraft disinsection for international quarantine purposes. The biological effectiveness of the SRA formulation against susceptible mosquitos and its non-irritancy to passengers render it suitable as a standard formulation for aircraft disinsection. The G-1492 formulation-effective against resistant and non-resistant mosquitos-could be used where insecticide-resistance is proved, although it is slightly irritant to some passengers. Both formulations are described. The authors suggest that further research is needed to develop a safe formulation that is effective against resistant and non-resistant insects and yet not irritant to passengers and crew.
