The effect of animal health products on the formation of injection site lesions in subprimals of experimentally injected beef calves.

Two hundred and twenty beef calves were used in an experimental study to determine the occurrence of injection site lesions at slaughter (15 to 18 months of age) following subcutaneous and intramuscular injection of various products into the top hip (top butt), thigh (round), and neck or rib of calves at birth, branding, or weaning. Products tested were: 2 different preparations of selenium; a 2-way, a 7-way, and an 8-way clostridial bacterin; 2 combination 7-way clostridial and Haemophilus somnus bacterins; 2 H. somnus bacterins; 2 different 4-way modified-live viral respiratory vaccines; a 4-way killed viral and H. somnus vaccine; and penicillin, florfenicol, ceftiofur, trimethoprim-sulfa, and tilmicosin. The occurrence of lesions, number of steaks affected with lesions, the trim weight of lesions, the histological class of lesions, and the estimated economic losses are described. Generally, products administered subcutaneously in the neck produced minimal tissue damage and economic losses.

Kinetics of adriamycin injected proximal to a tumor: a comparative study between venous and arterial injections.

A kinetic study of plasma concentration of Doxorubicin (Adriamycin) was performed in 25 cases of malignant melanoma of the extremity with malignant adenopathy, treated with the same dose (20 mg per m2). Drug concentration was measured using a radioimmunoassay, with good intra-assay and inter-assay reproducibility. The kinetic analysis used the multiple compartmental method and a simulation of the plasma curves. Adriamycin injected intravenously quickly leaves the plasma into an exchangeable compartment with a slow plasma return and subsequent prolonged mean duration of the plasma half life at a low concentration. Thus, the intravenous perfusion results in a high plasma concentration only during the time of infusion. After intra arterial injection proximal to the tumor, a fraction variable (average 35%) is not released back into the circulation, or released very slowly. This local sequestration (important in terms of local concentration) explains the efficiency and the potential local toxicity of this method of administration. The rapid release of about 70% of the drug into the plasma, with kinetics similar to that observed after intravenous infusion, allows for no significant reduction of systemic toxicity.

Posterior segment injury developed after injection of anesthetics on eyelids with needleless jet injection device.

BACKGROUND: Though a needleless jet injection device (NJI device) has advantages over a conventional needle attached syringe for injecting anesthetics, safety of using it for lid surgery is not proved. We report a case of posterior segment injury suspected caused by a NJI device. METHODS: A 47-year-old woman presented with decreased visual acuity after regional anesthesia at the lower eyelids with a NJI device. RESULTS: Vitreous and subretinal hemorrhage was found associated with retinal edema adjacent to the optic disc of the right eye and around the inferior temporal arcade of the left eye. Fluorescein angiography revealed choroidal rupture in the both eyes. By 2 months, although the hemorrhage resolved, subretinal fibrosis and chorioretinal atrophy developed. Her vision decreased to 20/60 in the right eye and 20/40 in the left eye. CONCLUSION: The energy generated by the NJI device seemed to have reached the eyeballs to cause the blunt-typed posterior segment injuries. As choroidal rupture may result in a permanent visual loss, the risks associated the off-labeled use of the device for lid surgeries should be awakened.

Effects of multiple daily injection therapy with Humalog mixtures versus separately injected insulin lispro and NPH insulin in adults with type I diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Injection of insulin lispro (LP) before meals provides a more physiologic insulin activity profile than regular human insulin, but the relatively short duration of action of LP may allow the blood glucose (BG) level to increase during the late postprandial period (4-7 hours after meals) unless basal insulin is optimally replaced. One approach to basal insulin optimization has been to combine small doses of NPH with LP before meals. When used in a similar fashion, premixed, fixed-ratio insulin preparations containing LP and NPL (an LP-based intermediate-acting insulin) may provide the basis for an optimized basal-bolus insulin regimen. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed mean late postprandial glycemic control during treatment with a premixed formulation consisting of a high proportion of LP (75% LP/25% NPL; H) and a premixed formulation consisting of a medium proportion of LP (50% LP/50% NPL; M). The H/M formulation was given before meals and was compared with treatment with preprandial LP + NPH (LP + N) in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM). METHODS: This multicenter, randomized, open-label, 2-period crossover study was conducted at 4 centers in Italy and 1 center in France. Patients eligible for the study had type 1 DM, were > or = 18 years of age, and had a glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA(1c)) <150% of the upper limit of normal. Patients were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatment sequences: LP self-mixed with NPH before meals plus NPH alone at bedtime for 8 weeks (LP + N) followed by preprandial H or M, plus NPH alone at bedtime for 8 weeks (H/M), or the opposite sequence. Assessments included 8-point self-monitored BG profiles, HbA(1c), and hypoglycemia (any sign or symptom of hypoglycemia or BG < 3.0 mmol/L [<54.0 mg/dL]). The primary outcome measure was the late postprandial BG value, calculated as the mean of the combined prelunch (late postbreakfast), predinner (late postlunch), and bedtime (late postdinner) values. RESULTS: A total of 89 patients with type 1 DM were enrolled (44 men, 45 women; mean [SD] age, 38.3 [12.8] years; mean [SD] body weight, 70.8 [11.6] kg; mean [SD] body mass index, 24.6 [3.0] kg/m(2); mean [SD] duration of diabetes, 17.8 [10.5] years; mean HbA(1c), 7.9% [0.88%]). The mean (SD) late postprandial BG values were similar between treatments (8.9 [2.1] mmol/L [160.3 (37.8) mg/dL] for H/M vs 9.0 [1.8] mmol/L [162.1 (32.4) mg/dL] for LP + N), as were the end point HbA(1c) values (7.8% [0.9%] for H/M vs 7.9% [0.8%] for LP + N). The rate of hypoglycemia was significantly higher during treatment with H/M, primarily because of episodes occurring between 12 PM and 6 PM, but was relatively low in both groups (mean/median rate per patient per 30 days: 2.87/2.14 for H/M and 2.11/1.07 for LP + N; P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In this population of patients with type 1 DM, preprandial H/M provided an effective alternative regimen for prandial and basal insulin replacement. Late postprandial BG control, an indicator of basal insulin sufficiency, was similar to that achieved with an intensified regimen of LP + N injected separately before meals, and the end point HbA(1c) was similar between the 2 treatments.

Effects of oocyte collection time and injection position on pronucleus formation and blastocyst development in round spermatid injection in mouse.

The injection of spermatozoa into mouse, human and rabbit oocytes at specific times and positions can result in different rates of viable embryo development. However, it is not clear how the timing and position of round spermatid injection (ROSI) affect pronucleus (PN) formation and blastocyst development of mice. First, we determined the changes in relative position of the first polar body and the spindle, carried out ROSI from 11.5 to 13 h post-hCG administration, then activated by Sr2+, and finally compared the development of ROSI zygotes, including the formation of pronuclei and development of blastocyst. Between 11.5 and 13 h post-hCG administration, the rate of 2PN formation by ROSI at 3 o'clock was the highest among all treated oocytes. Moreover, the blastocyst rate of zygotes with two pronuclei (2PN) was up to 27.41%. These results suggest that the time and position of ROSI can significantly influence the formation of 2PN, that the rates of 2PN formation are closely correlated with blastocyst formation and that the formation of 2PN is necessary for later embryo development.

On-line dynamic extraction and automated determination of readily bioavailable hexavalent chromium in solid substrates using micro-sequential injection bead-injection lab-on-valve hyphenated with electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry.

A novel and miniaturized micro-sequential injection bead-injection lab-on-valve (microSI-BI-LOV) fractionation system was developed for on-line microcolumn soil extraction under simulated environmental scenarios and accurate monitoring of the content of easily mobilisable hexavalent chromium in soil environments at the sub-low parts-per-million level. The flow system integrates dynamic leaching of hexavalent chromium using deionized water as recommended by the German Standard DIN 38414-S4 method; on-line pH adjustment of the extract by a 0.01 mol L(-1) Tris-HNO(3) buffer solution; isolation of the chromate leached from the matrix constituents onto a Q Sepharose strong anion-exchanger freshly packed into the microconduits of the microSI-assembly; air-segmented elution of the sorbed species by a 40 microL plug of 0.5 mol L(-1) NH(4)NO(3) (pH 8) eluent; and detection by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS). The effect of simulated acidic rain on the accessibility of chromate forms for plant uptake was also investigated. The proposed approach offers several advantages over conventional speciation/fractionation protocols in the batch mode, including immediate separation with concomitant preconcentration of the released chromate, minimization of Cr(vi) to Cr(iii) interconversion risks, enhanced accuracy, and non-existence of re-adsorption/re-distribution problems along with a detailed pattern of the kinetics of the leaching process. The reliability of the proposed method was evaluated via spiking of a moderately polluted agricultural soil material (San Joaquin Soil-Baseline Trace Element Concentrations) with water-soluble Cr(vi) salts at different concentration levels. The potential of the microSI-BI-LOV set-up with renewable surfaces for flame-AAS determination of high levels of readily bioavailable chromate in contaminated soils is also addressed.

Infraclavicular plexus block: multiple injection versus single injection.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This prospective, randomized, and multicentered study was undertaken to evaluate the success rate of coracoid infraclavicular nerve block performed with a nerve stimulator when either 1 or 3 motor responses were sought. METHODS: Eighty patients who presented for elbow, forearm, or wrist surgery were randomly allocated to one of the following groups: in group 1 (single stimulation), 30 mL local anesthetic (LA) was injected after locating only 1 of the median, ulnar, or radial motor responses. In group 2 (multistimulation), 3 responses were located: musculocutaneous, median or ulnar, and radial response, corresponding, respectively, to the lateral, medial, and posterior cords. A total of 10 mL LA was injected on each response. Bupivacaine 0.5% and lidocaine 2% with epinephrine 1:200000 (1:1 vol) were used as the LA mixture. Sensory and motor blocks were tested by a blinded observer. RESULTS: Block duration was slightly increased in the multistimulation group (P =.004). The onset time of sensory and motor block was faster in each nerve distribution, particularly in the radial, musculocutaneous, and antebrachial nerves. The success of anesthesia increased in the multistimulation group. The success rate of the block, without any additional block, sedation, or general anesthesia, increased from 40% in the single stimulation group to 72.5% in the multistimulation group (P <.0001). If the brachial and antebrachial cutaneous nerves were not included in the evaluation, success rate reached 87.5%. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that by performing an infraclavicular block with stimulation of all 3 cords of the brachial plexus, the success rate is higher than when only a single stimulation is used.

[The possibility of side effects during the application of roentgenologic contrast media by the method of the biphasic bolus/perfusor injection and the monophasic bolus injection (author's transl)].

In spite to lower the dose dependent side effects by the application of roentgenologic contrast media in the computed tomography a system of a biphasic injection per bolus and perfusor was installed and compared with that of the monophasic bolus injection. Special rules on the installation of the perfusor at CT should be observed.

Comparison of percutaneous acetic acid injection and percutaneous ethanol injection for hepatocellular carcinoma in cirrhotic patients: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound-guided percutaneous ethanol injection (PEI) and percutaneous acetic acid injection (PAI) are effective in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We conducted a prospective study to compare the therapeutic efficacy of both these methods. METHODS: Sixty-three patients were treated by PAI using 50% acetic acid and 62 by PEI using pure ethanol. There were no significant baseline differences in age, sex, Child-Pugh class, tumour size and number, or other clinico-biochemical parameters between the two groups. RESULTS: During a follow-up period of 24 +/- 9 (range 6-38) months, 19 (30%) of the PAI group and 21 (34%) of the PEI group died (P = 0.704). The 1- and 3-year survival rates were 84% and 51% for the PAI group and 81% and 46% for the PEI group (P = 0.651). The corresponding tumour recurrence rates were 51% and 74% for the PAI group, and 54% and 64% for the PEI group (P = 0.787). The treatment sessions were 3.9 +/- 1.6 and 6.2 +/- 2.3 for the PAI and PEI groups, respectively, in each treatment cycle (P = 0.008). A multivariate analysis using the Cox regression model revealed that ascites (relative risk (RR) 3.1, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.5-6.3, P = 0.002), large (>3 cm) or multinodular HCCs (RR 2.4, 95% CI 1.1-5.4, P = 0.04), and development of tumour recurrence (RR 7.0, 95% CI 3.1-16.0, P < 0.001) were independent, poor prognostic factors in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: PAI and PEI are equally effective in the treatment of HCC. PAI has the advantage of fewer treatment sessions in each treatment course. Careful pretreatment patient selection may improve survival.

Frequency of sepsis after local corticosteroid injection (an inquiry on 1160000 injections in rheumatological private practice in France).

OBJECTIVES: The principal aims of this study were to determine the frequency of sepsis after local corticosteroid injection (SALCSI), to compare the results with those of the literature and to determine the main factors leading to a decrease in the frequency of SALCSI. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted among 69 rheumatologists in private practice. Sixteen items were studied and are reported. RESULTS: The mean number of years of private practice in rheumatology was 20.9. The total number of CS injections (CSI) was 1160000 for an average of 809 CSI per year and per therapist. The mean number of CSI performed by one rheumatologist was 16 800. Fifteen SALCSI had occurred, which corresponds to a frequency of 1/77300 CSI. The rate of SALCSI for the older rheumatologists was lower than that of their younger colleagues. The frequency of use of corticosteroid packaged in a sterile syringe (CSPSS) was approximately 85%. Nine out of the 15 cases of sepsis had occurred after the use of CS not packaged in a sterile syringe and six after the use of CSPSS. Thus, the frequency of SALCSI was 1/162000 after the use of CSPSS and 1/21000 after the use of CS not packaged in a sterile syringe. CONCLUSIONS: The mean frequency of SALCSI in Paris and the surrounding area was 1/77300 during the last 21 yr, a decrease since the 1960s and 1970s. This decreased incidence is in part due to the greater experience of the rheumatologist, but even more to the use of CSPSS.

AQUAVAN injection, a water-soluble prodrug of propofol, as a bolus injection: a phase I dose-escalation comparison with DIPRIVAN (part 1): pharmacokinetics.

BACKGROUND: AQUAVAN Injection (AQ) (GPI 15715; Guilford Pharmaceutical Inc., Baltimore, MD) is a water-soluble prodrug of propofol (PropofolGPI). This study aimed to explore the pharmacokinetics of AQ, PropofolGPI, and formate (a metabolite of AQ) and to compare them with the pharmacokinetics of propofol lipid emulsion (PropofolD). METHODS: After ethics committee approval, 36 healthy volunteers were randomly allocated into six cohorts (male/female: 3/3) and given a single bolus of AQ (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 mg/kg). For comparison, an equipotent dose (as measured by the Bispectral Index) of PropofolD was given to the same subjects 1 week later. For both drugs, blood samples were collected (1-480 min) to analyze AQ, PropofolGPI, PropofolD, and formate concentrations. Noncompartmental pharmacokinetic analyses were performed for all analytes. A population compartmental model was developed for AQ and PropofolGPI using NONMEM. The models were evaluated using simulations and bootstraps. RESULTS: The noncompartmental pharmacokinetic comparison revealed different dispositions of PropofolGPI and PropofolD. The maximum plasma concentration was lower for PropofolGPI than for PropofolD at equipotent doses, and apparent clearance and distribution volume were much higher for PropofolGPI than for PropofolD. Formate concentrations were similar when injecting both drugs and were not higher than baseline. Compartmental modeling revealed that the pharmacokinetic behavior of AQ and its liberated PropofolGPI was best described by a nonlinear, six-compartment model, composed of two three-compartment models connected to each other by hydrolysis of AQ to PropofolGPI. CONCLUSIONS: PropofolGPI showed different noncompartmental pharmacokinetics from PropofolD, hereby revealing the influence of the formulation. The combined model for AQ and PropofolGPI was best modeled by a nonlinear, six-compartment model.

AQUAVAN injection, a water-soluble prodrug of propofol, as a bolus injection: a phase I dose-escalation comparison with DIPRIVAN (part 2): pharmacodynamics and safety.

BACKGROUND: AQUAVAN Injection (AQ) (GPI 15715; Guilford Pharmaceuticals Inc., Baltimore, MD) is a water-soluble prodrug of propofol. The authors explored the pharmacodynamics and safety of AQ and compared it with propofol lipid emulsion (PropofolD). METHODS: After institutional review board approval, 36 volunteers with American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status of I were randomly allocated into six cohorts (male/female: 3/3 per cohort) and given a single bolus of AQ (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 mg/kg). A Bispectral Index monitor (Aspect Medical Systems Inc., Newton, MA) measured the hypnotic effect. The lowest Bispectral Index level (BISpeak) was recorded. One week later, PropofolD was given to the same subjects at 50 mg/min to reach a similar BISpeak. Heart rate, oxygen saturation measured by pulse oximetry, blood pressure, and side effects were monitored. Incidence and duration of apnea and loss (LOCverbal) and return of response to verbal command were measured. A population compartmental pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic model was developed for AQ using NONMEM and evaluated using simulations, leverage, and bootstrap analyses. RESULTS: In the higher dosages (cohorts 4-6), all subjects achieved LOCverbal. Similar times until LOCverbal were seen for AQ and PropofolD. A dose-related increase in duration of LOCverbal was longer for AQ than for PropofolD. AQ BISpeak occurred later than with PropofolD. Pain on injection was only present with PropofolD (12 of 36). With AQ, transient paresthesias and pruritus were seen. Hemodynamic profiles were similar for both drugs, except for an initial tachycardia after AQ administration. Dose-dependent apnea was more pronounced with PropofolD than with AQ. The AQ combined pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic profile was best described by a nonlinear, six-compartment pharmacokinetic model and an effect site compartment. A dependency of the ke0 value on the PropofolGPI plasma concentration was noted. CONCLUSION: Bolus administration of AQ achieves LOCverbal at a similar time as an equipotent amount of PropofolD but shows a longer time to BISpeak and prolonged pharmacodynamics. For both drugs, excellent drug safety was achieved, although there was a tendency of fewer and shorter duration of apneas for AQ.

Intravitreal injection of fibroblasts: the pathological effects on the ocular tissues of the rabbit following an intravitreal injection of autologous skin fibroblasts.

The intravitreal injection of autologous cultured fibroblasts has been used by many groups to study proliferative vitreoretinopathy. Ninety-five New Zealand white rabbits were used to study the pathological effects on the ocular tissues following such an injection over various time periods up to six months. The ocular tissues were studied by light microscopy, electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and autoradiography. The cells which contributed to the inflammatory response (initially neutrophils, then later macrophages and lymphocytes) were found to gain entry into the vitreous via the pars plana, pars plicata, and the vessels associated with the optic nerve head. In the experimental eyes the detached retinae had a reduced ability to incorporate 3H proline. Both epiretinal and subretinal membranes were found on the retinal surfaces. The majority of the glial cells within the membranes were identified as Müller cells. The retinal pigment epithelium beneath the detached retinae incorporated 3H thymidine and detached into the subretinal space. Clear evidence was obtained of both epithelial cell migration through the retina and involvement within epiretinal membranes.

Randomised controlled trial comparing percutaneous radiofrequency thermal ablation, percutaneous ethanol injection, and percutaneous acetic acid injection to treat hepatocellular carcinoma of 3 cm or less.

AIMS: The aim of this study was to compare the outcomes of radiofrequency thermal ablation (RFTA), percutaneous ethanol injection (PEI), and percutaneous acetic acid injection (PAI) in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 187 patients with HCCs of 3 cm or less were randomly assigned to RFTA (n = 62), PEI (n = 62), or PAI (n = 63). Tumour recurrence and survival rates were assessed. RESULTS: One, two, and three year local recurrence rates were 10%, 14%, and 14% in the RFTA group, 16%, 34%, and 34% in the PEI group, and 14%, 31%, and 31% in the PAI group (RFTA v PEI, p = 0.012; RFTA v PAI, p = 0.017). One, two, and three year survival rates were 93%, 81%, and 74% in the RFTA group, 88%, 66%, and 51% in the PEI group, and 90%, 67%, and 53% in the PAI group (RFTA v PEI, p = 0.031; RFTA v PAI, p = 0.038). One, two, and three year cancer free survival rates were 74%, 60%, and 43% in the RFTA group, 70%, 41%, and 21% in the PEI group, and 71%, 43%, and 23% in the PAI group (RFTA v PEI, p = 0.038; RFTA v PAI, p = 0.041). Tumour size, tumour differentiation, and treatment methods (RFTA v PEI and PAI) were significant factors for local recurrence, overall survival, and cancer free survival. Major complications occurred in 4.8% of patients (two with haemothorax, one gastric perforation) in the RFTA group and in none in two other groups (RFTA v PEI and PAI, p = 0.035). CONCLUSIONS: RFTA was superior to PEI and PAI with respect to local recurrence, overall survival, and cancer free survival rates, but RFTA also caused more major complications.

Dynamic contrast-enhanced CT of the liver: comparison of contrast medium injection rates and uniphasic and biphasic injection protocols.

To determine the effect of contrast medium injection rate and biphasic versus uniphasic bolus on hepatic parenchymal enhancement at computed tomography (CT), 105 patients were randomized into four protocols. Hepatic and aortic enhancement curves were measured for each protocol. The optimal scanning interval (the duration between onset of a desired hepatic enhancement threshold and decline of enhancement below the threshold or onset of the equilibrium phase) and contrast enhancement index (CEI) (area under the hepatic enhancement curve above a desired threshold during the nonequilibrium phase) were the primary determinants of merit. Measurements were performed at hepatic enhancement thresholds between 10 and 60 HU. At most thresholds of hepatic enhancement, optimal scanning intervals were significantly longer and CEIs were significantly higher for the biphasic protocols than for the uniphasic protocols (P < .03). A biphasic injection with a high initial flow rate produces high peak contrast enhancement but delayed onset of equilibrium and thus provides a longer optimal scanning interval.

Myocardial blood flow rate and capillary permeability for 99mTc-DTPA in patients with angiographically normal coronary arteries. Evaluation of the single-injection, residue detection method with intracoronary indicator bolus injection and the use of a mobile gamma camera.

The aims of the present study were to quantitate myocardial perfusion and capillary permeability in the human heart by means of the single-injection, residue detection method using a mobile gamma camera. With this method, the intravascular mean transit time and the capillary extraction fraction (E) can be determined in one experiment and in the same myocardial region. Eighteen patients with a history of chest pain episodes and angiographically normal coronary arteries were studied after intracoronary bolus injections of 99mTc-DTPA during elective coronary angiography. Two measurements were performed at a 15-min interval during resting conditions, and a third measurement was made during atrial pacing. Regions of interest were drawn in the left anterior descending (LAD) and the circumflex (CX) coronary artery perfusion beds. Sources of variation in plasma flow rate (fpl), E, and the calculated capillary permeability area product (PS) were determined. Spontaneous 15 min variations (mean of two values) for the LAD and the CX territory, respectively, gave a mean fpl(LAD) of 74.2 (measurement 1) and 77.8 ml.(100 g.min)-1 (measurement 2) (SD of the difference 7.5 ml.(100 g.min)-1) and fpl(CX) of 82.7 and 92.1 ml. (100 g.min)-1, respectively (SD of the difference 16.1 ml.(100 g.min)-1), and E(LAD) was 51.0 and 55.7%, respectively (SD of the difference 8.4%), and E(CX) was 52.9 and 50.4%, respectively (SD of the difference 5.9%). During atrial pacing, the rate-pressure product increased by 97%, and in the LAD area fpl increased by 46% (p < 0.05), E decreased by 6% (NS), and PS increased by 39% (NS), whereas in the CX region flow increased by only 9% (p < 0.01), E decreased by 15% (p < 0.05), and PS decreased by 15% (NS) compared with baseline values. Both the spontaneous variation and the observer variation are low. The reduced vasodilator response in the CX region in combination with the decrease in E, which reduce the supply of nutrients, may play a role in the symptoms of these patients.

Three injections of human chorionic gonadotropin are as effective as ten injections in the treatment of cryptorchidism.

Two schedules of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) administration were compared in a study of 332 boys (473 testes) aged 1-13 years with cryptorchidism. One group of patients received 10 hCG injections according to the International Health Foundation (IHF) schedule while the other group received 3 hCG injections at intervals of 7-10 days (1-3 years = 3 x 1,000 IU; 3-6 years = 3 x 1,500 IU; 6-10 years = 3 x 3,000 IU; 10-13 years = 3 x 5,000 IU hCG). Results from both schedules were comparable during the first and also during a second treatment period at the age of 1-3 and 3-6 years; between 6 and 13 years of age the IHF schedule was more successful.
