Use of hand-to-hand impedancemetry to predict body composition of African women as measured by air displacement plethysmography.

OBJECTIVES: To test the validity of a simple, rapid, field-adapted, portable hand-held impedancemeter (HHI) for the estimation of lean body mass (LBM) and percentage body fat (%BF) in African women, and to develop specific predictive equations. DESIGN: Cross-sectional observational study. SETTINGS: Dakar, the capital city of Senegal, West Africa. SUBJECTS: A total sample of 146 women volunteered. Their mean age was of 31.0 y (s.d. 9.1), weight 60.9 kg (s.d. 13.1) and BMI 22.6 kg/m(2) (s.d. 4.5). METHODS: Body composition values estimated by HHI were compared to those measured by whole body densitometry performed by air displacement plethysmography (ADP). The specific density of LBM in black subjects was taken into account for the calculation of %BF from body density. RESULTS: : Estimations from HHI showed a large bias (mean difference) of 5.6 kg LBM (P<10(-4)) and -8.8 %BF (P<10(-4)) and errors (s.d. of the bias) of 2.6 kg LBM and 3.7 %BF. In order to correct for the bias, specific predictive equations were developed. With the HHI result as a single predictor, error values were of 1.9 kg LBM and 3.7 %BF in the prediction group (n=100), and of 2.2 kg LBM and 3.6 %BF in the cross-validation group (n=46). Addition of anthropometrical predictors was not necessary. CONCLUSIONS: The HHI analyser significantly overestimated LBM and underestimated %BF in African women. After correction for the bias, the body compartments could easily be estimated in African women by using the HHI result in an appropriate prediction equation with a good precision. It remains to be seen whether a combination of arm and leg impedancemetry in order to take into account lower limbs would further improve the prediction of body composition in Africans.

[The musician's hand: 2 case reports from the hand surgery clinic].

Report of the hand surgical treatment in two musicians, which enabled them to continue with their occupation. A young cellist was no longer able to play his instrument due to a painful scar at the pulp of his left index finger. The surgical treatment, performed only after a period of hesitation, consisted in scar excision and reconstruction of a normal pulp by a palmar advancement flap. Following a fracture of the distal radius, healed in 35 degrees dorsal angulation, a violinist was not able to flex his wrist maximally as required for playing in high octaves. This was again possible after a corrective osteotomy with interposition of a corticocancellous bone graft from the iliac crest and an intensive program of postoperative excercises. The important role of the cooperation of the patient, particularly in the rehabilitation, is emphasized.

Conformational flexibility in the right-handed and in the left-handed double helices of Na+-d(m5C-G-T-A-m5C-G) studied by IR spectroscopy.

The X ray diffraction study of a d(m5C-G-A-T-m5C-G) crystals has shown the existence of a 2 conformation while the Raman spectroscopy study of the same fragment in solution showed that then the oligonucleotide adopted a B geometry. Infrared spectroscopy has allowed us to study this sequence in films in a wide range of hydrations and to vary the water content of the sample at different rates. We have thus obtained four I.R. spectra, of the B and 2 conformations respectively at 100% and 98% relative humidities, of another 2 form with a different geometry of the phosphate groups at relative humidities below 98% and in addition a fourth spectrum recorded after a rapid dehydration of the sample which is then blocked in a right-handed form at low R.H. In this case the structure of the phosphodiester chain may be not uniform. The results are discussed by comparison with previously obtained I.R. spectra of poly d(G-C), poly d(A-C). d(G-T), d'm5C-G-A-m5C-G-T-G-C-G) d(m5C-G-C-G-m5C-G) and d(C-G-m5C-G).

Hg(II)-induced changes in DNA-circular dichroism: reversible transitions between right-handed and left-handed screwness.

Exposing native calf thymus DNA (in 0.1 M NaClO4, 5 mM cacodylic acid buffer, pH 6.81, 25 degrees C) to increasing concentrations of Hg(ClO4)2 produces dramatic changes in its circular dichroism (CD). Let r = [mol of added Hg(II)*/[mol DNA base]: the conservative CD spectrum of the DNA B-form, consisting of the 273 nm major (+) CD band, the 245 nm major (-) CD band, the 219 nm minor (+) CD band, and the 208 nm minor (-) CD band, becomes non-conservative in appearance at 0.01 less than r less than 0.12 and assumes the spectral characteristics of a left-handed DNA double helix at 0.12 less than r greater than 1.0. The presence of a number of isoellipticity points shows that well-defined equilibria exist between the various chiroptical forms of mercurated DNA. The CD changes are totally reversible upon the removal of Hg(II), at least up to r = 1.0, demonstrating that Hg(II) keeps all base pairs in register.

Multiple DNA secondary structures in perfect inverted repeat inserts in plasmids. Right-handed B-DNA, cruciforms, and left-handed Z-DNA.

The capabilities of five recombinant plasmids, containing relatively long (approximately 60-100 base pairs) perfect inverted repeat (IR) inserts, to support supercoil stabilized non-B-DNA structures were studied in vitro. The IRs were also alternating purine-pyrimidine sequences, thus, each could form either left-handed Z-DNA or cruciforms. Single-strand specific endonucleases, restriction endonucleases and methylases, and OsO4 modifications were used to characterize the DNA structures. Two-dimensional gel electrophoretic studies indicated that three of the five IRs formed both cruciforms and Z-DNA. (C-G) containing inserts preferred to form Z-DNA, whereas (T-G) sequences favored cruciforms. In vivo supercoil relaxation experiments demonstrated the existence of cruciforms in Escherichia coli. The physiological significance of these structures is discussed.

Hand-foot-uterus-(HFU) syndrome with hypospadias: the hand-foot-genital- (HFG) syndrome.

Three brothers with the typical findings of the HFU-syndrome, but in addition with various degrees of hypospadias are reported. The family history otherwise was negative. The similarity of the "pattern-profile" of these cases with the mean pattern of the 11 previously reported ones is striking, as expressed by a product moment correlation of 0.83, 0.8 and 0.78 respectively. The widening of the concept of the HFU to that of a HFG-syndrome, as suggested by Poznanski et al, in 1974, is discussed.
