"The purpose of this paper is to investigate the main problems encountered with the various surveys on child mortality in the [African] Sahel countries.... After reviewing the methodological problems, the author discusses how to estimate the level of child mortality. Potentialities and traps in the study of mortality differentials, as well as the use of retrospective data, are also examined." (SUMMARY IN ENG AND SPA)
UNLABELLED: The purpose of this study is to estimate the technical difficulties and the intraoperative complications which appear in patients with high myopia who had been operated on cataract through phacoemulsification technique; to establish the IOL refractive power and to estimate the functional results at 45 days postoperative. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We performed a study on 44 eyes with high myopia and cataract operated in the Emergency Military Hospital from Cluj-Napoca during 15th of January -15th of June 2003. We analyzed the patients' age, the technical difficulties and intraoperative complications, the IOLs choosing and the functional results. RESULTS: The greatest frequency of patients with high myopia and cataract met into the study was between 50-60 years old (43.18%). The intraoperative complications were represented by the posterior capsule's refraction without loss of vitreous in one case, zonular rupture in one case and one case with loss of the nucleus into vitreous. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with high myopia and cataract the surgical procedure solves both visual problem and refractive deficiency. For the myopic eye is important to use IOL with 6 mm, 6.5 mm diameter.

"This article argues that, for the short to medium term, [New Zealand population] projections can be improved upon by adopting econometric methodologies which take explicitly into account the demographic-economic two-way interaction in certain components of international migration. Specifically, the article summarizes research on the causes and consequences of trans-Tasman migration, which is the dominant component of the volatility in New Zealand's net migration. It is shown how these findings can aid population forecasting."

"On the basis of monthly observations for the first eight months of 1993, annual totals of births, deaths and migration have been estimated for 1993 [for the Netherlands]. Total immigration in 1993 is expected to be around 125 thousand. This would imply that immigration is higher than ever before. The main cause of the increase is the strong rise in the number of asylum seekers.... The number of births is expected to decline slightly in 1993.... In 1993 the number of deaths is expected to increase more strongly than the rising long-term trend. The extra increase is caused by a sudden increase of deaths in the spring due to an influenza epidemic. Due to the increase in migration population growth in 1993 will be higher than in 1992." "This paper presents an analysis of the 1985 census [of Kiribati] and compares projections made on the basis of that analysis with the 1990 enumeration. Comparison is made throughout with the estimates derived from [the] 1978 census." Information is provided on population growth and structure, child and adult mortality, marriage and first birth, and fertility.
