[Profile comparison systems and performance diagnostic, electronic data processing-supported technology--their use in improving responses to social medicine questions and expert assessments and planning of rehabilitation measures].

Systems for comparing ability and requirement profiles as well as instruments for evaluating functional capacity are current topics in rehabilitation. Only few of them however are related to vocational rehab. This article describes the present state of affairs in the development in procedures, instruments and methods to measure work-related human functional capacity with the aim of vocational rehabilitation and integration, helping to obtain objective results to decide about further steps. They are an addition to sociomedical advice in assessment and vocational centres, and serve to expand the common basis of the WHO International Classification of impairments, disabilities and handicaps (ICIDH). The purpose is intervention. Abilities are contrasted with requirements, as the basis for defining a need for intervention and realizing appropriate action. This is the thinking integrated in the German profiling assessment and documentation system IMBA--Integration von Menschen mit Behinderungen in die Arbeitswelt (Integration of people with disabilities into worklife). Diagnostic, computer based technology and work simulation and measurement to evaluate functional capacity as developed and used in the U.S. is complementary to IMBA. Work simulation is based on databases, such as the D.O.T., and includes standardized work requirement profiles. Such systems have been imported from the United States of America to Switzerland and the Netherlands and now to Germany. There are numerous connections with German assessment systems, and the fundamentals of ICIDH are included. Common application in the field of rehabilitation is dealt with, also in view of pensioning issues. The need for user training and quality management are reported in this article as well.

[Electronic data processing-assisted text processing at the clinic and in general practice].

Word processing is currently the most frequent application for personal computers, and a wide variety of standard software is available. The capabilities of modern word-processing software includes the convenient typing and correction of all routine correspondence, as well as the professional layout of scientific manuscripts. The decision to purchase a certain word-processing programm should be made according to local needs and prerequisities. Three to six months may be necessary to fully adapt the organization of a clinic or private practice to the new technology.

[Electronic data processing-assisted bookkeeping and accounting system at the Düsseldorf Institute of Forensic Medicine].

In 1985 we reported about the usefulness of a simple home computer (here: Commodore C 64) for scientific work. This paper will demonstrate, that such an instrument also can be an appropriate tool for the entire accountancy of a medicolegal institute. Presented were self-designed programs which deal with the following matters: complication of monthly performance reports, calculation of services for clinical care, typing of analytical results and brief interpretations, typing of liquidations, clearing of proceeds from written expertises and autopsies against administration and staff.

[Electronic data processing-assisted documentation in gastroenterologic endoscopy. Simultaneous archiving and report].

A new computer programme for documentation in endoscopy is presented. Separate numeric codes each for main diagnosis, histology, type of complication and therapeutic management provide flexibility for every kind of endoscopic investigation. The ICD Veska Code, a code of group diagnosis, was chosen for the main diagnosis and expanded by one digit. This allows the addition of topical and/or other differential diagnostic features to the main diagnosis. As a result we have a code with typical endoscopic diagnostic patterns. The system provides a direct printout without the requirement of any further provisions. The numeric code ensures simple statistic evaluation of all important data.

[Electronic data processing-assisted epicrisis in clinico-psychiatric documentation of findings].

The medical profession is using computers to an increasing extent, and the graphic epicrises described here, which is intended mainly to augment the conventional epicrisis, is another useful application. It is based on a standardised psychopathological examination and documentation procedure and permits the course of psychopathological syndromes to be demonstrated in an illustrative way.

[Electronic data processing-compatible documentation in neurology--developmental stage of neurologic findings for a specialty-specific scientific evaluation system and print-out of a computer assisted epicrisis].

A computer compatible neurological examination record has been drawn up for a neurological documentation called "ADOK Neurologie" as part of a scheme for the basic registration of patient-related information from all patients receiving ward treatment at the Medical Academy Dresden and the County Neurological and Psychiatric Hospital Arnsdorf. The examination questionnaire consists of dichotomous questions and permits up to 1,525 separate items of neurological information per patient to be stored and processed. The information permits purposeful scientific analysis and computer print-out of the epicrisis. The article reports on the structure of the questionnaire, the prospects and limits of the method and experience gained during many years of practical use.

[Electronic data processing-assisted high dosage therapy with stem cell transplantation at the Donauspital].

Organization of high dose chemotherapy with stem cell transplantation essentially requires EDV-support. "ONCOBASE" has been adapted into the Donauspital network on May 1, 1992. We report about the 2-year clinical experience with ONCOBASE: 1. ONCOBASE effectively supports communication between the ward, ambulance and hospital pharmacy (where all cytostatics are prepared). 2. ONCOBASE provides better surveillance concerning all therapeutic procedures including cytostatic drugs and supportive therapies. 3. ONCOBASE allows the generation of medical letters which include all drugs and supportive therapies delivered. 4. Since ONCOBASE is a database program, all informations concerning the patients are registered. These include cumulative drug doses, information on side effects, blood cell kinetics after previous therapies, kinetics of tumor markers and results of further examinations. 5. ONCOBASE permits rapid data exchange with other hospital networks using the communication data record governed by the "Arbeitskreis für EDV der deutschen Gesellschaft für Hämatoonkologie".

[Partially automated antigen determination and antibody detection with microtiter plates].

In addition to several conventional methods for the detection of red cell antigens, the use of microplates has various advantages either as a solid-phase assay (enzyme immunoassay) or as native microplate. Microplates may also be used for the detection of red cell antibodies in 'pooled-cell solid-phase assays' of the second generation and for antibody screening. Blood donors and patients are the two main fields which are to be examined in immunohematology. There are various advantages in using the microplate in blood group serology: (i) if there is hardware already available, like sample processors and microplate readers, the use of microplates in blood group serology reduces the costs even if the equipment has to be purchased for this purpose only; (ii) low quantities of reagents are used in microplate assays; (iii) the application of bar codes on tubes and microplates guarantees the most security in sample identification; (iv) it is possible to investigate blood samples selectively depending on the available software if antibody detection is done as the sixth test beside anti-HIV, anti-HCV, HBsAG, lues antibodies and ALT, and (v) recording of data will be easy if electronic data processing is used.
