Congenital cleft lip and fluctuating dermatoglyphic asymmetry.

Fluctuating asymmetry for the palmar atd angle was studied in propositi born with CL(P) and their normal parents and sibs. The propositi with a family history of this congenital malformation were significantly different from the controls for this type of asymmetry. The propositi without a family history and the normal parents and sibs of both types of propositi were similar to the controls. The difference between the two types of propositi suggests that in some individuals a genetic mechanism may account for CL(P) and increased fluctuating asymmetry for this dermatoglyphic trait.

[The polymorphism of the C line pf palmar dermatoglyphics and its use in population and human pathology studies].

The present work contents a study of the C line polymorphism, from the dermatoglyphic picture of the palm and its variability regarding the population of four rural communities from the Suceava department and from two groups of mentally handicapped and deaf and dumb children coming from special schools of Moldavia (700 normal and 487 handicapped subjects). Generally speaking, the studied series present a behavior similar to that of the Romanian and European population, although, in both cases, there are some distortions or important dermatology-phases consisting in a rise of frequency for the forms of partial and total suppression of the C line to values (Cx = 25.75% at Panaci and Co = 10.25% at Vama) which surpass even those reported for the 21 trisomy (Cx = 25%, Co = 7%) and some important inversions from the classical dimorphic line regarding the distribution of the two modal types CR and CU, materialized in an alignment of the palmar ridges more transversal for men instead of women (CR : men > women instead of women > men) and conversely for the intermediary to oblique alignment (CU : women > men instead of men > women).

[Possibility of using dermatoglyphic markers for assessment of genetic hypotheses in schizophrenia].

Dermatoglyphic alterations in schizophrenic patients are considered in virtue of literature data and the author's own investigations. The absence of obvious and regular difference between healthy people and schizophrenic patients in the incidence of finger and palm patterns is revealed. Only statistically insignificant tendency of different manifestations of some features in patients and healthy persons is observed. Skin patterns doubtly may be used as additional diagnostic paraclinical method and applied to work out genetic aspects of schizophrenia. The addiitonal investigations and particularly and the investigations of "family forms" of schizophrenia are suggested for suggested for complete solution of this problem.

EEG mapping in children with different dermatoglyphic patterns.

This study is an attempt to analyze the relationships between EEG and dermatoglyphic patterns (DP) in 6-8 years girls. EEG-mapping was carried out in 80 healthy girls with different types of DP in 6 frequency band: delta, theta, alpha-1, alpha-2, alpha-3 and beta. Certain connection of the palmar and finger patterns with the EEG characteristics was revealed. The most pronounced differences were observed between subgroups with prevalence (8 and more) or absence of whorls on their hands fingertips, and between groups with presence or absence of certain pattern (whorl, loop or vestige) on thenar/interdigital 1 area (Th/1). Significant (p<0.05) increase of spectral density in alpha-2 and alpha-3 bands in children with whorls on hand fingertips were revealed in the first case. EEG of children with Th/1 pattern differed from the group without such pattern by increased spectral density in alpha-2, alpha-3 and beta bands. The new data obtained support the genetic determination of the EEG.

A genetic and dermatoglyphic study on periodontitis.

Periodontal diseases encompass a wide range of disease manifestations and processes from the mildest inflammation of gingiva to the most advanced destructive periodontitis with loss of attachment, bone tissue and teeth. No entirely satisfactory identification and classification exist in periodontitis especially for high risk early onset periodontitis (EOP) cases, because of insufficient knowledge about the aetiological and host factors and their overlapping clinical and laboratory features. In this study, the dermatoglyphics, which is a genetic test method, suggesting the modes of inheritances of hereditary diseases, was performed on 36 EOP and 20 adult periodontitis (AP) patients and 20 periodontally healthy individuals. The diagnostic value of this genetic test method, which is the study of the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of patterns of ridged skin, and the role of heredity on periodontal diseases are discussed.

Dermatoglyphic relationships among South Amerindian populations.

The biological affinities among 17 South American aboriginal populations are examined by means of a multivariate analysis of their dermatoglyphic finger patterns. Different analytical methods [cluster analysis, nonmetric multidimensional scaling, and multiresponse permutation procedure (based on distances derived from principal components analysis)] reveal interpopulation relationships consistent with Loukotka's language classification. The paleo-American tribes from the Gran Chaco and Brazil share a high incidence of whorls as a distinctive feature. The Andean and tropical forest groups, which present a greater prevalence of arches and ulnar loops, appear to be closely related to each other, suggesting a more recent common origin and/or substantial gene flow between them.

Dermatoglyphic findings in dental caries: a preliminary report.

The dermatoglyphs of caries-free students and the students with dental caries in 10 or more teeth were compared. The caries-free students had an increased frequency of ulnar loops on all fingers. In contrast, the students with dental caries had an increased frequency of whorls on all fingers.

[Analysis of dermatoglyphics of the digito-palmar and plantar complex in families].

This research was made in order to find out if there is an inherited component which determines the features of dermatoglyphics by transmitting inherited information from parents to children. The article shows the results of a research into 22 quantitative features of the digito-palmar complex, and 2 features of the plantar area in 400 persons. No significant differences were found in the parameters of the observed variables between fathers and sons, nor mothers and daughters. The differences were found, however, between fathers and daughters, and mothers and sons. The analysis of the correlation coefficients within the families showed that only the variables TRC and TPRC have polygenic hereditary model. The correlative analyses have shown close links between parents and children, the link between parents and sons being stronger than the link between parents and daughters. The research has not confirmed the thesis about greater overlap between mother and children, than between father and children, set forth by Knussmann in 1973.

[Dorso-ventral patterning of the vertebrate limb and dermatoglyphs with special reference to the pad pattern of mice].

The proximo-distal (P-D), antero-posterior (A-P) and dorso-ventral (D-V) axes are important for normal limb development in vertebrates. It has been reported that D-V axis is decided by Wnt-7a, Lmx-1 and Engrailed-1 (En-1) which are expressed in the limb bud along D-V axis. These factors are thought to be required for formation of the apical ectodermal ridge (AER) which is necessary for outgrowth of the limb. The results from spontaneous mutant mice meromelia (mem), which exhibits double-dorsality of the distal limb, suggested that other factors, not only En-1 and Wnt-7a are required for decision of AER, and mem was probed to be novel gene regulating En-1 and Wnt-7a directly or indirectly. The dorsalized ventral structures in meromelia were found by observation of the pad pattern. Pad pattern is always constant in normal mice, and each pad indicates particular part of the limb. So pad pattern is useful to detect and describe anomalies even in the limbs without skeletal defects. The process of pad development is associated with the limb patterning, and abnormal pad pattern may indicate pathogenesis of abnormal limb development. The mouse pad pattern is usable as the model for human dermatoglyphs, and it is also important to investigate mechanisms of human diseases.

Parent-offspring resemblance of palmar and plantar dermatoglyphic patterns in Down syndrome.

With the aim of investigating the influence of trisomy 21 on the expression of heritable morphological features, we recorded the palmar and plantar dermatoglyphic patterns in 48 children with Down syndrome (DS), in both their parents, and, as a control, in 57 of their siblings. Using the Kendall tau rank correlation test, a considerable parental influence on the frequency of true patterns in the interdigital areas (IDA) III and IV of the palms (P = 0.3%) and soles (P = 1.0% and 3.8%, respectively) is demonstrated for the control siblings. In the children with DS, this influence is discernible as well, although with no statistical significance. A greater number of families may be required to settle the question.

[Palmar dermatoglyphics in different phenotypic manifestations of schizophrenia].

Palmar dermatoglyphics was studied in 1120 patients with schizophrenia with due regard for its form, and in 1240 healthy persons of the same population. The frequency of the AU/AC type of patterns in the hypothenar area was increased in women with schizophrenia and its paranoid form. Among men with schizophrenia and its simple form the frequency of dysplasia, true and defective patterns on the thenar was increased; in addition in men with the paranoid form the frequency of loops in the 3d interdigital areas was also increased.
