An analysis of temporal patterns in urinary nitrogen excretion of young adults receiving constant diets at two nitrogen intakes for 8 to 11 weeks.

The temporal pattern of daily urinary nitrogen (UN) excretion was investigated in 21 young adult men and women who participated in two metabolic studies involving constant diets and lasting 8 to 11 weeks. For one group (16 subjects), nitrogen (N) intake was about 280 mg N/kg per day (mixed animal and plant protein sources) for 8 weeks; for the second group (five subjects), N intake was about 90 mg N/kg per day (egg protein) for 11 weeks. Two mathematical models were examined to determine how well they described the variations in UN. The first modeled only random variability while the second added a component of serial correlation (correlation between successive daily observations). After correcting the UN data for linear trend, to minimize effects of possible alterations in body composition, only two of the 21 subjects showed significant serial correlation of daily UN. Moreover, it is shown that any serial correlation undetectable in these data would not be of practical importance in estimating UN levels in short-term dietary experiments. It is concluded that the interpretation of metabolic N balance measurements involving constant N intakes over relatively short dietary periods in not complicated by cyclic, time-dependent variations in UN.

A new specimen and dental microwear in Oreopithecus bambolii.

The authors describe a new specimen of Oreopithecus bambolii, a catarrhine primate from late Miocene sites of Tuscany and Sardinia (Italy). Microwears of 4 specimens of Oreopithecus bambolii have been analysed on standard surfaces of facet 9 to determine the diet. The microwear pattern confirms the hypothesis already put forward on the basis of its dental morphology that Oreopithecus bambolii had a leaf-based diet.

Stimulation pattern dependent contractions of myocardial preparations after lipid diets.

Lipid diets modify the electro-mechanical coupling. To characterize the regulation of the supply of Ca for the activation of the contraction the influence of the stimulation pattern on the development of tension was investigated after diets containing cholesterol (Ch), rape oil (RO) and cholesterol-oil (ChO). The sequence of increasing inotropic states produced was compared with a control group (C). In ChO high resting potentiation, low postextrastimulatory potentiation (PEP) and a delayed Ca supply for interpolated extra contractions (EC) are typical features. The positive inotropic effect of rising extracellular Ca grows parallel to the sequence of the inotropic states. The maximum rate of contraction and relaxation correlates linearly with the tension development. Some of the results are similar in RO. In both groups a more pronounced involvement of the sarcoplasmic reticulum in the Ca regulation should be responsible for the effects. Especially in C the Ca loading effect of paired stimulation shortens the latent period and increases the rate of contraction and relaxation. In Ch the highest values of PEP are reached. These results reflect the involvement of a high sarcolemmal fraction of Ca in the activation.

Vitamin A prevents high fat diet-induced ACF development and modifies the pattern of expression of peroxisome proliferator and retinoic acid receptor m-RNA.

Some dietary compounds, among them fats, are modulators of colon cancer risk. This study reports the modulating effects of n-6, with or without vitamin A, on promotion of colon preneoplasic lesions induced by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH) and on the expression of nuclear receptors (PPARgamma, RXRalpha, and RARbeta). One group of male Fisher rats was fed a basic diet (5% safflower oil) and two groups were fed a high-fat diet (HFD, 25% safflower oil). Of these, one was supplemented with 200 IU vitamin A for 5 mo. The safflower oil contained polyunsaturated fatty acids, mainly linoleic acid (73%). The data showed an increasing effect of safflower oil-enriched diet on aberrant crypt foci occurrence and multiplicity. This effect was impaired by vitamin A supplementation. In addition, an HFD-related up-regulation of PPARgamma and a concomitant down-regulation of RARbeta mRNA expression were observed with or without chemical initiation and were prevented by vitamin A. Moreover, when treated with DMH, HFD rats exhibited a dramatically decreased expression of RXRalpha mRNA (-49%). It was hypothesized that HFD, leading to hyperexpression of PPARgamma, would produce an alteration of retinoic acid signaling and, in this way, create a background modulating colon cancer risk.

Diurnal variation of aldosterone and plasma renin activity: timing relation to melatonin and cortisol and consistency after prolonged bed rest.

Exposure to prolonged bed rest is known to induce changes in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) by way of posture, sodium and potassium balance, and stress, which may have serious consequences for patients. We focused on the diurnal variation of the RAAS by investigating changes in the levels of plasma renin activity (PRA) and aldosterone; for comparison to markers of the intrinsic pacemaker and to stress, we measured melatonin and cortisol. PRA, aldosterone, melatonin, and cortisol were measured hourly in 10 normal subjects with standardized sleep patterns, posture, and diet at baseline and after 11 days of prolonged bed rest conducted under a light-dark cycle. Circadian characteristics of hormone secretion patterns were estimated by multiple harmonic regression with excellent goodness-of-fit measures. Variability in the melatonin and cortisol patterns across subjects was minimal. Even for pulsatile hormones, this technique successfully estimated the acrophase, which was the salient feature. Baseline hormone peak times started with melatonin near the middle of the sleep period, followed by PRA, then aldosterone, and then cortisol around wake time. Prolonged bed rest did not induce significant changes in any timing characteristic of the secretion patterns. Baseline and prolonged bed rest peak times for melatonin and cortisol and amplitude characteristics for all hormones were highly correlated, indicating consistency within individuals. These data provide strong evidence that prolonged bed rest of 11 days' duration does not disrupt either the timing characteristics of the RAAS or the intrinsic pacemaker.

[Food and nutrient consumption in Spain in the period 1940-1988. Analysis of its consistency with the Mediterranean diet].

BACKGROUND: Not enough information is available regarding Spanish alimentation from the Civil War up to the present. Furthermore, there are some evidence that the Spaniards are leaving behind their traditional, healthy Mediterranean diet. The aim of this study was therefore to describe the food and nutrient intake trends of the Spanish population from 1940-1988 and establish to what extent the pattern of the Mediterranean diet has been maintained. METHODS: New food balance sheets for the Spanish population have been elaborated using all the information available and consistently applying the methodology of the European Union over the period from 1940-1988. RESULTS: Total caloric intake and that of all the macronutrients increased over the study period although this increase was greater after 1960. The contribution of lipids to total caloric intake has increased (30% in 1960-1968 and 42% from 1980-1988), protein contribution has remained the same (13% 1960-1968 and 13% 1980-1988) and carbohydrate intake has decreased (58% from 1960-1968 to 45% from 1980-1988). These changes are the result of an important increase in the consumption of meat, eggs, milk and derivatives. Nonetheless the high intake of fruit and vegetables, fish and olive and seed oils has been maintained. Thus, from 1980-1988 the ingestion of monounsaturated/saturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated/saturated fatty acids was 1.3 and 0.5, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The first systematic reconstruction of the alimentary and nutritional history of the Spanish population over the last fifty years has been carried out. The Spanish diet has undergone typical changes associated with economic development but continues to be consistent with the pattern of the Mediterranean diet. These changes in diet are, however, of worry because of their deviation from optimum nutritional patterns.

Meal patterns and body weight after nicotine in male rats as a function of chow or high-fat diet.

Studies of the effects of nicotine (NIC) on meal patterns in rats often employ chow pellet diets that contain little fat, whereas humans using NIC commonly consume diets relatively rich in fat. The aim of the present study was therefore to compare the impact of NIC administration and NIC cessation on meal pattern in adult male rats offered a standard powdered chow (CHOW: 10.9% fat by calories) diet or a palatable high-fat (HIFAT: 58.3% fat by calories) diet. Computerized meal pattern analyses were conducted for male rats treated for 14 days with injections of either saline or 1.4 mg/kg/day of NIC (as the free base given in 5 equal amounts) during the dark phase and continued for 10 days after NIC cessation. The suppression of daily caloric intake by NIC was larger in HIFAT-NIC rats than in CHOW-NIC rats (p < .01), such that NIC induced a greater suppression of body weight in HIFAT-NIC rats, relative to CHOW-NIC rats (p < 0.02). NIC administration reduced MS in both CHOW and HIFAT rats. CHOW fed rats showed a gradual increase in meal number in response to NIC, whereas HIFAT fed rats showed a significant initial suppression of meal number, which returned to control levels by day 4 of the 14 day NIC treatment period. In addition, NIC increased water intake more in HIFAT fed rats than in CHOW rats. Cessation of NIC resulted in transient increases in daily caloric intake in CHOW and in HIFAT rats. The present study demonstrates that NIC actions on food intake suppression, meal patterns, and weight reduction differ depending on whether the rats are fed low- or high-fat diets.

Early childhood feeding practices in southern Italy: is the Mediterranean diet becoming obsolete? Study of 450 children aged 6-32 months in Campania, Italy. Cultural Paediatric Association.

With increasing affluence, the traditional food choices of Mediterranean populations are changing. The changes appear to begin in early infancy, with increased consumption of processed foods. To determine current consumption patterns of the diets of 450 toddlers, 6-32 months old, enrolled from 17 paediatric practices in the Campania region of Italy, quantitative data were collected for 7 d, using calibrated feeding bottles, cups and dishes. Automated food analysis was employed and quality control was performed on a sub-sample. The average daily intake was 373 kJ/kg. Forty-three percent of energy was provided by carbohydrates, while fats supplied 39%, 45% of fats were saturated and 46.7% were monosaturated (primarily olive oil). Proteins provided 18% of daily energy; most (81.4%) were of animal origin. Fibre was virtually absent from the study children's diet. Total daily cholesterol reached an average value of 191 mg/d, corresponding to 201 mg/4.2 mJ. The intake per kg of cholesterol increased with age in the first year, while proteins and fats decreased. Dairy products were the main source of energy, fats and cholesterol. Vegetables and legumes were a minor source of energy at all ages: the consumption of fruit decreased with age. Although the overall pattern of feeding of this cohort remains favourable compared with other children groups in developed countries, consumption of whole milk and full fat dairy products may be reduced to equilibrate the diet.

A preliminary study of potential dietary risk factors for coronary heart disease among Chinese American adolescents.

This study investigated dietary knowledge, attitudes toward diet, behavioral factors affecting diet, and dietary patterns between American Chinese middle school students and Chinese middle school students living in China. Significant differences occurred in these variables between the two groups of students. Chinese students living in China had less knowledge and a less favorable attitude. However, they exhibited more positive behavioral factors affecting diet which include culture, religion, customs, economic factors, beliefs, and values. As for the dietary pattern, Chinese student living in China consumed less meat, dairy products, fat, sweets and snacks, and fast foods, and consumed more fruits, vegetables, and starch.

Ibuprofen for tonsillectomy pain in children: efficacy and complications.

We designed a prospective, randomized, double-blind study to test the efficacy and safety of ibuprofen compared with acetaminophen with codeine for pediatric posttonsillectomy/adenotonsillectomy patients. Twenty-seven children, aged 6 to 16 years, were enrolled. We collected information on pain control, return to normal sleep pattern, return to normal diet, and duration for which medication was required. Coagulation profiles were measured before surgery and on postoperative day 3. Acetaminophen with codeine was more effective in controlling pain on days 1 and 3 (p = 0.0475 and 0.0328, respectively). However, we detected no difference between the treatment groups (p = 0.2216) with regard to pain control on day 5. The ibuprofen group required medication for a longer period (p = 0.0464). We detected no statistically significant differences between groups with regard to return to normal diet (p = 0.2346) and return to normal sleep pattern (p = 0.9554). The postoperative hemorrhage rate was 0% in the acetaminophen-with-codeine group and 12.5% in the ibuprofen group. The ibuprofen group demonstrated a mean increase in bleeding time of 2.07 minutes on the third postoperative day (p = 0.0379). The mean change in postoperative bleeding time between the two groups was statistically significant (p = 0.0140). We found no statistically significant differences in prothrombin time and partial thromboplastin time between groups. On the basis of the findings of this pilot study, we conclude that acetaminophen with codeine is safer and more efficacious than ibuprofen in the management of posttonsillectomy/adenotonsillectomy pain in children.

Digestive proteases during development of larvae of red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier, 1790) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).

The evolution of digestive proteases during larval development of Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier, 1790) has been studied. A progressive increase of protease activity has been found. The optimum pH for proteolytic activity against azocasein was determined. Caseinograms revealed an active complex of alkaline proteases from the early stages of the development. From the apparent molecular masses, three groups of proteases have been found - high molecular-mass proteases, medium molecular-mass proteases, and low molecular-mass proteases. Studies using specific protease inhibitors showed the major presence of serine proteases in gut extracts. The results obtained from larvae reared on different substrates have made possible a comparative assessment of the influence of diet on the development of the digestive enzymatic system. Larvae fed on an artificial diet showed a complete pattern of digestive proteases. Data suggest that this diet seems to be suitable for future research with this insect pest.

Fermentation of liquid coproducts and liquid compound diets: Part 2. Effects on pH, acid-binding capacity, organic acids and ethanol during a 6-day storage period.

The effects of a 6-day storage period on changes in pH, acid-binding capacity, level of organic acids and ethanol of three liquid coproducts [liquid wheat starch (LWS), mashed potato steam peel (PSP) and cheese whey (CW)] and two liquid compound diets [liquid grower diet (LGD) and liquid finisher diet (LFD)] were studied. All products, except LWS, showed a significant decrease in pH and acid-binding capacity during storage. At the end of the storage period, all products reached a pH of between 3.5 and 3.9. In general, it can be concluded that the lactic acid content, and to a lesser extent the acetic acid content, increased dramatically during storage. In contrast, the ethanol content increased significantly in the liquid compound diets only. The pattern of changes in pH and organic acids during the 6-day storage period was different between the liquid coproducts and the liquid compound diets. At the start of storage, liquid coproducts are already in the 'middle' of the fermentation process, while liquid compound diets need approximately 24-36 h before fermentation begins. Consequently, in practice a different approach to obtain fermented diets is needed for liquid coproducts and liquid compound diets.

beta-Carotene fails to act as a tumor promoter, induces RAR expression, and prevents carcinoma formation in a two-stage model of skin carcinogenesis in male Sencar mice.

Clinical trials have shown a significant increase in incidence of lung cancer among smokers and asbestos workers supplemented with beta-carotene, suggesting a tumor-promoting activity for this agent. We set out to test possible tumor-promoting and chemopreventive activities of dietary and topical beta-carotene in the two-stage 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene-12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA) model of mouse skin carcinogenesis. In the first study, the effects of three levels of dietary beta-carotene (6, 60, and 600 micrograms/g purified diet containing no other retinoid or carotenoid) were assessed over a period of 42 weeks. Carcinoma yield was reduced by approximately 50% in the 600 micrograms/g diet group (mean 0.22 carcinomas/mouse) compared with the 6 micrograms/g diet group (mean 0.44 carcinomas/mouse, p = 0.003). The 60 micrograms/g diet group showed a pattern of inhibition similar to the 600 micrograms/g diet group. A protective effect (25% reduction) of beta-carotene (in the 600 micrograms/g diet group) on papilloma formation was also found. However, the intermediate 60 micrograms/g diet group showed the same incidence as the low 6 micrograms/g diet group. This points to a lack of correlation between papilloma and carcinoma incidence, as we also found in previous work on dietary retinoids and carotenoids. The purpose of the second study was to assess whether topical beta-carotene (2 micrograms) has tumor-promoting or chemopreventive activity in the two-stage protocol. In the absence of TPA, beta-carotene had no significant tumor-promoting activity. Instead, papilloma yield induced by TPA was decreased by topical beta-carotene from an average of 20 to approximately 10 papillomas/mouse (p = 2.5 x 10(-7)). The effect of topical beta-carotene persisted beyond the treatment period (Week 24) until the termination of the study at Week 42. Western blot analysis of mouse skin extracts showed that topical beta-carotene upregulated retinoic acid receptor-alpha and -gamma expression in the dorsal skin. This finding suggests that beta-carotene may work as a chemopreventive agent by upregulating the expression of retinoid receptors in mouse skin. In conclusion, our data show that beta-carotene prevents skin carcinoma formation, induces retinoic acid receptor expression, and fails to act as a tumor promoter in the two-stage model of skin tumorigenesis.

The nutrition transition in China: a cross-sectional analysis.

Diets and activity patterns are changing rapidly in low-income countries, and problems of undernutrition and overnutrition commonly exist side by side. China has conquered problems of food scarcity at the national level and has undergone a remarkable transition in the structure of its diet in the last decade. In this paper, we use data from the 1989 China Health and Nutrition Survey and national data from the State Statistical Bureau to explore China's recent history with respect to nutrition and to identify patterns of under- and overnutrition. In particular, we see that higher income levels, particularly in urban areas, are associated with consumption of a diet higher in fat and with problems of obesity. At the same time, undernutrition is a problem in important segments of Chinese society. There is a need for the Chinese government to consider ways to address these problems of deficit and excess jointly.

Intake and food sources of dietary fat among schoolchildren in The Woodlands, Texas.

To investigate the nutrient intake and food use patterns among schoolchildren, diet was assessed among 138 children and adolescents in grades 5 through 12 using three random, nonconsecutive, 1-day food records. Mean intake of total fat, saturated fat, and polyunsaturated fat as percent of calories was 35.6%, 13.4%, and 6.6%, respectively. Among all subjects, 17% consumed diets containing less than 30% of calories from fat, 34% consumed greater than or equal to 38% of calories from fat, 7% consumed less than 10% of calories from saturated fatty acids, and greater than 97% ate less than 300 mg of cholesterol per day. While intake of calories, sodium, and beta-carotene per 1000 kcal was higher in subjects consuming higher fat diets, intake of other micronutrients was either higher among those eating low-fat diets or did not differ by level of fat intake. Differences were seen in the amount of saturated fat and cholesterol that individual food sources contributed to the diets of subjects eating high and low fat diets. These cross-sectional data show that a substantial proportion of children and adolescents in this population are consuming diets low in fat and cholesterol without systematic differences in intake of other nutrients, suggesting that current dietary guidelines regarding fat intake are attainable within the current food use pattern of healthy, school-aged children and adolescents.

Effects of starvation and refeeding a high carbohydrate diet on the intra-acinar distribution pattern of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase activity in the liver of male and female rats.

Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase activity in rat liver was shown to be heterotopically distributed within the acinus under varying feeding conditions. Highest values of PEPCK activity were found in the periportal zone of the acinus from where it decreased continuously towards the perivenous zone. 84 h of starvation resulted in an increase of activity, which was most prominent in the perivenous zone, but nevertheless resulted in a steeper gradient. Refeeding of starved rats with a high carbohydrate diet for 6 nights led to a decrease in PEPCK activity which was most prominent in the periportal zone, but almost negligible in the perivenous zone, resulting in a further change in the activity gradient. Sex-dependent differences for total PEPCK activity were found i) in controls, where the activity was lower in females, ii) after starvation, where the induction was much higher in females, and iii) after refeeding of starved rats, where the activity in females remained higher compared to that of the controls. Differences in the intra-acinar localization of the activity in dependence of the sex were registrated in the control group and in starved rats. Livers from female rats contained a higher periportal/perivenous ratio compared to males. In starved and starved and refed animals the periportal/perivenous ratios were almost the same in both sexes.

Synchronization of ruminal degradation of supplemental carbohydrate with pasture nitrogen in lactating dairy cows.

Twelve Holstein cows in early to midlactation (8 fitted with ruminal cannulas) were used to test the hypothesis that the synchronization of the rate of ruminal degradation of supplemental carbohydrate and N from fresh pasture would increase the amount of N retained for growth and milk production. A concentrate based on ground shelled corn was fed either at the time that pasture was fed at 0900 and 1700 h (synchronous) or 4 h after pasture was fed at 1300 and 2100 h (asynchronous). The crossover design included a 6-d adjustment period and a 10-d milk sampling period. Nitrogen balance was determined during the last 5 d of each period. Cows fed the synchronous diet had a lower mean ruminal pH. Peak ammonia concentration at 3 and 5 h after pasture feeding in the morning was reduced by approximately 33% of values obtained from cows fed the asynchronous diet. The diurnal pattern of blood urea N concentration was similar to that of ruminal ammonia, but mean daily concentrations of blood urea N did not differ between diets. Nitrogen retained for milk production and growth was not influenced by diet, and no differences in milk production, composition, or efficiency were observed. Based on changes in ruminal concentrations of ammonia, synchronous ruminal release of supplemental carbohydrate with pasture N appeared to improve the capture of ruminal N; however, these changes were transient and did not change the N status or performance of dairy cows.
