The basic framework of settlement of the USSR: origins and configuration.

The concept of a basic framework of settlement consisting of the largest cities in the USSR is developed. "The present framework shaped by cities over 100,000 and by cities over 500,000 is analyzed in terms of clusters of concentration and outlying centers. Changes in the framework over time are discussed in terms of varying sets of the 50 largest cities in various stages over the last 80 years."

Settlement in large cities of the USSR: an analysis of effectiveness (a review article).

"The issue of the effectiveness of large cities as forms of settlement remains a lively topic of debate in the USSR. Categorizing the issue into three aspects--economic, ecological and social--this paper reviews the arguments pro and con. Although the author makes a conscientious effort to reflect all points of view, a tone favoring the development of big cities appears evident in the discussion."

China's super-large cities: dominance and integration.

"This study is mainly intended to survey the ecological structure, particularly the dominance and integration [of economic development], of 20 super-large cities in China. Most of the statistics used in this study come from the China Statistical Yearbook (1984), according to which all the 20 cities have a population of more than two million."
