[Evaluation of the protective effect of Prussian blue, sodium alginate and calcium phosphate according to tumor development after single and chronic exposure to strontium 90 and cesium 137 mixture].

The mixture of radionuclides was employed in the concentrations of 100.0, 400.0 and 0.8, 2.0 mc/rat for strontium-90 and cesium-137 in single and chronic administration correspondingly. Prussian blue, sodium alginate and calcium were employed in amounts of 50 mg, 800 mg and 258 mg per rat a day. The data obtained are correlated with the results of the same experiments without using the protection. In compared doses of the irradiation the protective action of the substances under study was noted only in chronic experiments. In this case, the appearance of malignant neoplasms was nearly twice less, and the survival was 120 days longer. The absorbed doses were decreased by 17 times for cesium-137 in the whole body and nearly by 4 times for strontium-90 in the skeleton.

Induction of interferon and radioprotective activity of polyriboguanylic-polyribocytidylic acid complex in mice.

The effect of polyriboguanylic-polyribocytidylic acid complex was investigated against acute X- and prolonged 60Co-gamma irradiation. Prophylactic administration of the polyribonucleotide complex increased endogenous spleen colony formation and the percentage of survival of irradiated BALB/c mice. The most pronounced effect was observed when the animals had been irradiated at the time of maximum interferon accumulation in blood, i.e. 24 hr after interferon induction by the polyribonucleotide complex.

[Several features of the antioxidant action of chemical carcinogens].

Comparative studies of antioxidative effects of phenole inhibitors (vitamine E) amino-and sulfur-containing radioprotectors, and chemical cancerogens on oxidation of unsatured fatty acid were carried out. Some polycyclic hydrocarbons and azo-compounds produce a prolonged and stable decrease of peroxide accumulation rate in oxidized oleic acid. Due to this property in the in vivo systems chemical cancerogenes can induce prolonged stable changes in the parameters of vitally important redox processes.

[Cytogenetic effect of ultraviolet rays in mammalian cells at the DNA synthesis stage].

The frequency of chromosome aberrations induced by UV light at various wavelengths in the primary culture of mouse embryonic fibroblasts during the S-phase was studied. The aberration frequency is wavelength-dependent and reaches a maximum at 265 nm. The action spectrum for the chromosome aberrations determined at 254, 265, 280 and 302 nm closely conforms to the absorption spectra of thymidine. The value of caffeine potentiation was the same for 265 and 280 nm UV-induced aberrations. This indicates that primary chromosome damages and their transformation in cells are similar at these two wavelengths. The data obtained suggest that the formation of DNA cross-links following thymine dimerization is the first step in the formation of UV-induced chromosome aberrations in mammalian cells at the S phase.
