A deep examination of the literature till now available as well as personal experience, shows the advantages and the simple use of the fine needle aspiration method both for the diagnosis of tumours and other not neoplastic lesions. This method can be easily executed, it is painless, a high accuracy can be achieved also in clinically doubt cases and in early tumours. The authors think that the use of this method will spread rapidly because of its effectiveness and convenience.
The program has been developed for biopsy diagnosis in lymph node disease including tumors. The expert knowledge is based on the information about more than 200 morphological symptoms of 37 nosological unities: reactive lymphoid hyperplasia, metastatic tumors, granulomatous disease and others. The decision three consists of three sections: diffuse nontumor processes, inflammatory focal processes and tumor diffuse and focal processes. The system can provide a "second opinion" for pathologists in their professional activity and may useful as a teaching tool for medical students.
Using flow cytometry and radioimmunological test, a study was made of cytotoxic activities of natural killer (NK) cells of human peripheral blood of three patient groups: healthy donors, persons with infection pathology, and persons being in extreme situations (hyperoxygen gas mixture). With the increase in effector and target (K562) cell amount ratio, NK activity was seen elevating in all groups of patients examined. A correlation was obtained between NK activity in healthy donors and in patients examined by both the methods. NK activity in sick patients, registered by the two methods, was considerably lower than in healthy donors. NK activity in persons that appeared in extreme situations, registered by the radioimmunological test only, did not differ from that in healthy donors, whereas NK activity, registered by the flow cytometry, was found to be considerably lower, resp.
The pathology of Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is poorly understood and its biological basis remains largely unknown. One functional brain imaging study using [(18)F]Deoxyglucose-PET previously reported frontal and prefrontal hypometabolism. We studied brain metabolism at baseline in 12 medication-free female patients with BPD without current substance abuse or depression and 12 healthy female controls by [(18)F]Deoxyglucose-PET and statistical parametric mapping. We found significant frontal and prefrontal hypermetabolism in patients with BPD relative to controls as well as significant hypometabolism in the hippocampus and cuneus. This study demonstrated limbic and prefrontal dysfunction under resting conditions in patients with BPD by FDG-PET. Dysfunction in this network of brain regions, which has been implicated in the regulation of emotion, may underlie symptoms of BPD.
Many individuals with a history of pathological gambling (PG) also have a history of engaging in antisocial behaviors, and this has often been interpreted as a result of the former causing the latter. In a sample of 7,869 men in 4,497 twin pairs from the Vietnam Era Twin Registry, the authors examined (a) the association between PG and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), (b) the extent to which PG might be differentially associated with childhood conduct disorder (CD) and adult antisocial behavior (AAB), and (c) the contribution of genetic and environmental factors to the association of PG with ASPD, CD, and AAB. PG was significantly associated with all 3 antisocial behavior disorders, and the association of PG with ASPD, CD, and AAB was predominantly explained by genetic factors. The results of this study suggest that the greater-than-chance co-occurrence of PG and antisocial behavior disorders is partially due to their sharing a common genetic vulnerability. The antisocial behavior observed among many individuals with PG probably cannot be interpreted as being simply a consequence of the PG.
The current approach to the treatment of benign breast pathology is outlined. After a review of the literature and a detailed classification of benign breast pathologies, the data from a retrospective study of a personal series are presented.
