Nanomechanical resonator shuttling single electrons at radio frequencies.

We observe transport of electrons through a metallic island on the tip of a nanomechanical pendulum. The resulting tunneling current shows distinct features corresponding to the discrete mechanical eigenfrequencies of the pendulum. We report on measurements covering the temperature range from 300 down to 4.2 K. We explain the I-V curve, which unexpectedly differs from previous theoretical predictions, with model calculations based on a master equation approach.

Dispersion coefficients from a field-theoretic renormalization of fluid mechanics.

We consider subtle correlations in the scattering of fluid by randomly placed obstacles, which have been suggested to lead to a diverging dispersion coefficient at long times for high Péclet numbers, in contrast to finite mean-field predictions. We develop a new master equation description of the fluid mechanics that incorporates the physically relevant fluctuations, and we treat those fluctuations by a renormalization group procedure. We find a finite dispersion coefficient at low volume fraction of disorder and high Péclet numbers.

Dephasing times in closed quantum dots.

Dephasing of one-particle states in closed quantum dots is analyzed within the framework of random matrix theory and the master equation. The combination of this analysis with recent experiments on the magnetoconductance allows, for the first time, the evaluation of the dephasing times of closed quantum dots. These dephasing times turn out to be dependent on the mean level spacing and significantly enhanced as compared with the case of open dots. Moreover, the experimental data available are consistent with the prediction that the dephasing of one-particle states in finite closed systems disappears at low enough energies and temperatures.

Decoherence due to three-body loss and its effect on the state of a Bose-Einstein condensate.

A Born-Markov master equation is used to investigate the decoherence of the state of a macroscopically occupied mode of a cold atom trap due to three-body loss. In the large-number limit only coherent states remain pure for times longer than the decoherence time: the time it takes for just three atoms to be lost from the trap. For large numbers of atoms (N>10(4)) the decoherence time is found to be much faster than the phase-collapse time caused by intratrap atomic collisions.

Embedding dissipation and decoherence in unitary evolution schemes.

Dissipation and decoherence, and the evolution from pure to mixed states in quantum physics, are handled through master equations for the density matrix. By embedding elements of this matrix in a higher-dimensional Liouville-Bloch equation, the methods of unitary integration are adapted to solve for the density matrix as a function of time, including the nonunitary effects of dissipation and decoherence. The input requires only solutions of classical, initial value time-dependent equations. Results are illustrated for a damped, driven two-level system.

Fluctuation-dissipation theorem for metastable systems.

We show that an appropriately defined fluctuation-dissipation theorem, connecting generalized susceptibilities and time correlation functions, is valid for times shorter than the nucleation time of the metastable state of Markovian systems satisfying detailed balance. This is done by assuming that such systems can be described by a superposition of the ground and first excited states of the master equation. We corroborate our results numerically for the metastable states of a two-dimensional Ising model.

Quantum extension of the Jarzynski relation: analogy with stochastic dephasing.

The relation between the distribution of work performed on a classical system by an external force switched on an arbitrary time scale and the corresponding equilibrium free energy difference is generalized to quantum systems. Using the adiabatic representation, we show that this relation holds for isolated systems as well as for systems coupled to a bath described by a master equation. A close formal analogy is established between the present "classical trajectory" picture over populations of adiabatic states and phase fluctuations (dephasing) of a quantum coherence in spectral line shapes, described by the stochastic Liouville equation.

Nonequilibrium plasmons in a quantum wire single-electron transistor.

We analyze a single-electron transistor composed of two semi-infinite one-dimensional quantum wires and a relatively short segment between them. We describe each wire section by a Luttinger model, and treat tunneling events in the sequential approximation when the system's dynamics can be described by a master equation. We show that the steady-state occupation probabilities in the strongly interacting regime depend only on the energies of the states and follow a universal form that depends on the source-drain voltage and the interaction strength.

Minimal Brownian ratchet: an exactly solvable model.

We develop an analytically solvable three-state discrete-time minimal Brownian ratchet (MBR), where the transition probabilities between states are asymmetric. By solving the master equations, we obtain the steady-state probabilities. Generally, the steady-state solution does not display detailed balance, giving rise to an induced directional motion in the MBR. For a reduced two-dimensional parameter space, we find the null curve on which the net current vanishes and detailed balance holds. A system on this curve is said to be balanced. On the null curve, an additional source of external random noise is introduced to show that a directional motion can be induced under the zero overall driving force.

Shot noise spectrum of open dissipative quantum two-level systems.

We study the current noise spectrum of qubits under transport conditions in a dissipative bosonic environment. We combine (non-)Markovian master equations with correlation functions in Laplace space to derive a noise formula for both weak and strong coupling to the bath. The coherence-induced reduction of noise is diminished by weak dissipation and/or a large level separation (bias). For weak dissipation, we demonstrate that the dephasing and relaxation rates of the two-level systems can be extracted from noise. In the strong dissipation regime, the localization-delocalization transition becomes visible in the low-frequency noise.

Measurement efficiency and n-shot readout of spin qubits.

We consider electron spin qubits in quantum dots and define a measurement efficiency e to characterize reliable measurements via n-shot readouts. We propose various implementations based on a double dot and a quantum point contact (QPC) and show that the associated efficiencies e vary between 50% and 100%, allowing single-shot readout in the latter case. We model the readout microscopically and derive its time dynamics in terms of a generalized master equation, calculate the QPC current, and show that it allows spin readout under realistic conditions.

Periodic field emission from an isolated nanoscale electron island.

We observe field emission from an isolated nanomachined gold island. The island is able to mechanically oscillate between two facing electrodes, which provide recharging and detection of the emission current. We are able to trace and reproduce the transition from current flow through a rectangular tunneling barrier to the regime of field emission. A theoretical model via a master equation reproduces the experimental data and shows deviation from the Fowler-Nordheim description due to the island's electric isolation.

Mixed-state dynamics in one-dimensional quantum lattice systems: a time-dependent superoperator renormalization algorithm.

We present an algorithm to study mixed-state dynamics in one-dimensional quantum lattice systems. The algorithm can be used, e.g., to construct thermal states or to simulate real time evolution given by a generic master equation. Its two main ingredients are (i) a superoperator renormalization scheme to efficiently describe the state of the system and (ii) the time evolving block decimation technique to efficiently update the state during a time evolution. The computational cost of a simulation increases significantly with the amount of correlations between subsystems, but it otherwise depends only linearly on the system size. We present simulations involving quantum spins and fermions in one spatial dimension.

Spontaneous relaxation of a charge qubit under electrical measurement.

In this work we first derive a generalized conditional master equation for quantum measurement by a mesoscopic detector, then study the readout characteristics of qubit measurement where a number of remarkable new features are found. The work would, in particular, highlight the qubit spontaneous relaxation effect induced by the measurement itself rather than an external thermal bath.

Density functional theory of the electrical conductivity of molecular devices.

Time-dependent density functional theory is extended to include dissipative systems evolving under a master equation, providing a Hamiltonian treatment for molecular electronics. For weak electric fields, the isothermal conductivity is shown to match the adiabatic conductivity, thereby recovering the Landauer result.

Unified description of charge-carrier mobilities in disordered semiconducting polymers.

From a numerical solution of the master equation for hopping transport in a disordered energy landscape with a Gaussian density of states, we determine the dependence of the charge-carrier mobility on temperature, carrier density, and electric field. Experimental current-voltage characteristics in devices based on semiconducting polymers are excellently reproduced with this unified description of the mobility. At room temperature it is mainly the dependence on carrier density that plays an important role, whereas at low temperatures and high fields the electric field dependence becomes important. Omission in the past of the carrier-density dependence has led to an underestimation of the hopping distance and the width of the density of states in these polymers.

Dynamics of a large spin with strong dissipation.

We study the generalization of the spin-boson model to spins greater than one-half in the strong-coupling regime. This model applies to dissipative large spins as well as to ensembles of identical two-state systems coupled to a common environment. Using a combination of polaron transformations and master equations, we find nonexponential spin relaxation towards one of two possible equilibrium states. For Ohmic dissipation the relaxation is approximately logarithmic in time.
