Diagnostic procedures performed on patients with multiple myeloma typically reveal lytic bone lesions, osteopenia or osteoporosis, bone marrow infiltration by plasma cells as well as overproduction of immunoglobulin or light chains in the serum or urine. Skeletal manifestations are extremely variable and the unusual forms have been described extensively. Extramedullary plasma-cell tumours (plasmocytoma) are found in about 5% of newly diagnosed patients with multiple myelomas. In this paper we present eight patients with atypical forms of multiple myeloma.
Clear cell neoplasms of the abdominal organs are represented by a variety of epithelial and mesenchymal neoplasms, of varying malignant potential. Several varieties of clear cell carcinomas, including those with tubulopapillary, hepatoid, colloid, or neuroendocrine features, have been described, as well as several benign epithelial neoplasms. These epithelial tumors have been reported in the gastrointestinal hollow viscera, as well as the liver, pancreas, and biliary tract. A second major consideration is the mesenchymal-derived gastrointestinal stromal tumors, which also may feature clear cells, and comprise a spectrum of biological behavior. Miscellaneous lesions include clear cell variants of melanoma and mesothelioma. This review includes histological details of the various entities, as well as important histochemical, immunohistological, and ultrastructural features. Pertinent differential diagnostic points are stressed, including distinction of the primary clear lesions from relevant metastatic neoplasms.

A rare case is reported of coexistence of aortic abdominal aneurysm with sigmoid tumour. Emergency surgical treatment was instituted.
We applied helical CT to examinations of the abdomen and thorax. Scanning was performed continuously while the couchtop of the CT scanner was shifted at a constant speed. The entire lung field could be scanned during a single holding of the breath when the couchtop speed was 20 mm/s. Tumors as small as 3 mm were detected. The diagnostic detectability and accuracy of helical CT were far superior to those of conventional chest radiography. During abdominal examination, the target organ could be scanned at any specified phase (preferably arterial) during the injection of contrast medium. We detected very small hepatic tumors which could not be detected by conventional CT. Helical CT produced continuous data, which was reconstructed to display three-dimensional images. Helical CT could be used in mass screening for the detection of early lung cancer and in computer-aided diagnosis.

Abdominal wall neoplasms represent more or less 1% of human neoplasms in the adult. The authors reports their own experience based on 9 cases during over 20 years. The prognosis of these tumors is almost influenced from a lot of factors such as: histology, localization, staging, grading, sex, surgical margins, number of local recurrences. Abdominal wall neoplasm are less aggressive for compartmentalization of muscle layer and with a better prognosis because of their localization, and surgical opportunities of extensive resection (not less of 2 cm from tumor's macroscopic limits) allowed by modern prosthetic reconstruction techniques. Polipropilene seems to be the ideal material for such kind of reconstruction even if also mersilene, PTFEe and others were employed. PTFEe and Dual-meshes could be useful in those malignant tumors in which peritoneum resection is necessary.
The authors report 13 cases of pediatric abdominal tumours (1 hepatoblastoma, 8 neuroblastomas, 4 Wilms' tumours) angiographically evaluated following radiation and chemotherapy. The results suggest possible indications for radical surgery, in patients previously considered inoperable.

BACKGROUND: The advent of multidetector CT (MDCT) constitutes a quantum leap creating a wealth of new opportunities in medical imaging. However, while the basic principles of spiral CT still apply, we are now challenged to rethink our strategies in planning a CT study to take full advantage of the increased capabilities of MDCT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report here our preliminary experiences with MDCT for abdominal CT imaging within a 5-month period. During this time, suitable protocols for investigation of the abdomen using MDCT were developed. The capabilities of MDCT allow for tailoring dedicated CT protocols for routine applications as well as for biphasic liver studies and CT angiography of the aorta and abdominal vessels. RESULTS: The speed of MDCT can either be used to reduce the time needed to cover a given volume, or to use narrower beam collimations to increase the resolution of detail along the z-axis and reduce volume averaging. Higher scan speed allows reduction of the amount of contrast material in vascular applications and suppression of motion artifacts. Higher spatial resolution with thinner collimations reduces volume averaging and improves the detection of small hepatic and pancreatic lesions. Detailed analysis of vascular structures and high-quality three-dimensional reformations become feasible. New problems arise from the large amount of data generated by MDCT. CONCLUSIONS: MDCT offers a wealth of new opportunities that help us to come to a fast and accurate diagnosis in suspected abdominal disease. Traditional indications for performing CT are reemphasized and new clinical applications can be exploited.

Our experience with 153 CT scans of the abdomen and pelvis over the first eight months of availability at our institution has been analyzed. The efficacy in terms of contribution to the diagnosis in each patient was assessed and accuracy determined. CT was found to have made a significant contribution to the diagnosis in patients with diseases of the pancreas, aorta, retroperitoneal structures, and in cases of abdominal and pelvic masses and abcesses. It has been somewhat less helpful in evaluation of liver and renal diseases. Overall, CT scanning appears to be a significant new diagnostic modality in the evaluation of patients with abdominal and pelvic diseases.
