Air intussusception reduction: "the winds of change".

AIR is an excellent example of the application of the scientific process to the treatment of pediatric disease. For more than 40 years, pediatric radiologists in North America were comfortable with hydrostatic enemas for the diagnosis and treatment of intussusception. Initial clinical trials in the 1980s suggested the efficacy of AIR. Subsequent clinical studies demonstrated that fluoroscopy time and radiation are less, accurate pressure measurements are possible, and reduction rates are higher with AIR than with hydrostatic techniques. Questions regarding safety and types of perforation were answered in the laboratory with an animal model. Moreover, this experimental work clarified issues regarding maximum pressures and the importance of the Valsalva maneuver during AIR. Experimental data has been transferred to the radiological treatment of childhood intussusception. The "winds of change", generated by clinical and basic research, have now swept across North America. More and more radiologists are performing AIR. Many of the pediatric radiologists who still doubt the efficacy of AIR have had no experience with the technique. Air insufflation is safe and effective for the diagnosis and treatment of intussusception in infants and children. It is replacing the hydrostatic enema in an ever-increasing number of institutions. AIR is quicker, safer, and more effective than hydrostatic enemas. If you are using AIR, I hope this overview will further improve the radiological care of your pediatric patients. If you are not using AIR, I hope that these personal observations will stimulate your interest. "Try it; you'll like it!"

Genetic variance and breeding values for resistance to a wind-borne disease [Sphaerotheca macularis (Wallr. ex Fr.)] in strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) estimated by exploring mixed and spatial models and pedigree information.

A mixed model approach was used to estimate variance components and heritabilities for resistance to powdery mildew, a wind-borne disease in strawberry. In order to improve precision in the statistical computations, spatial error control effects were included to account for systematic environmental variations in the large field trials. Pedigree information was included where feasible. Seedling families obtained from an incomplete 63-by-63 diallel cross were grown at six locations and scored subjectively for mildew attack three times during the growing season. The 63 parents included both European and American cultivars as well as advanced selections from various breeding programmes. A total of 298 full-sib families were realized, including 26 reciprocal families. No reciprocal differences were found. On a plot-mean basis, the broad-sense heritability was found to be intermediate, H(2) = 0.44-0.50, depending on whether the pedigree information was included in the model or not. The increase was mainly due to a substantial increase in the additive variance component. Likewise, the narrow-sense heritability increased from h(2) = 0.39 to h(2) = 0.45 when the pedigree information was included, while the ratio of the specific combining ability variance to the general combining ability variance fell from 13% to 10%. The predicted breeding values of the 63 parents demonstrate that important cultivars such as Elsanta and Korona are unlikely to produce progenies with a high degree of resistance. On the other hand, the Norwegian cultivar Solprins, the Canadian cultivar Kent and the Italian cultivar Patty appeared to give highly resistant progeny. At the full-sib level, the estimated disease scores ranged from 1.15 (Kent x Induka) to 4.19 (Cavendish x Avanta), revealing a huge range of variation for powdery mildew resistance available for selection.

Risk of contact allergy and dermatitis at a wind turbine plant using epoxy resin-based plastics.

AIMS: To identify workplace and individual risk factors for occupational contact allergy and dermatitis. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out at an international company producing wind turbine systems in Denmark. A cohort of 724 production workers at four facilities was highly exposed to epoxy resin as well as other chemicals. A screening questionnaire (participation rate 84.7%) was followed by an interview by an occupational physician and a dermatological examination, including patch testing, for a comprehensive list of potential workplace sensitizers. RESULTS: Clinically diagnosed dermatitis was found among 214 workers (35.8%) and contact allergy to materials used in the workplace was found in 66 workers (10.9% of the total population and 20.3% of those who underwent patch testing). Of the 66 workers with a work-related allergy, 40 (60.6%) were allergic to epoxy compounds, 25 (37.9%) to hardeners and ten (15.2%) to other workplace materials, where one person showed an allergy only to these materials. Experiencing contact allergy was related to older age and longer employment in the workplace-however, neither of these risk factors was significant. The main risk factor for current dermatitis was contact allergy to materials used in the workplace, determined by patch testing, OR=5.4 (95% CI 3.9-9.9). Fewer days of absence from work was also related to current dermatitis, OR=2.0 (95% CI 1.2-3.5). CONCLUSIONS: In a cohort of workers with extensive exposure to chemicals related to epoxy-resin systems, contact dermatitis and allergy was prevalent. Older age and longer duration of employment at the workplace were individual risk factors for allergy to workplace materials, whilst work-related allergies and longer duration of employment at the workplace were significant risk factors for current dermatitis.

Sex allocation of a cosexual wind-pollinated tree, Quercus dentata, in terms of four currencies.

Sex allocation of a cosexual wind-pollinated species, Quercus dentata (Fagaceae), was analyzed using biomass, carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus as currencies based on data accumulated for 61 individuals from 1997-2004. Strongly female-biased sex allocation was indicated when measured in terms of biomass and carbon, but no significant bias was detected when measured in terms of nitrogen or phosphorus. From an adaptive viewpoint, there is little support for strong female-biased sex allocation, suggesting that sex allocation in terms of nitrogen or phosphorus is closer to the real picture. The relative sex allocation considerably varied from year to year, but the relative femaleness of individuals in the population was rather constant across years. No significant correlation was observed between relative sex allocation and fecundity or tree height, but individuals that showed very low fecundity tended to produce only acorns.

The long and winding road from the research laboratory to industrial applications of lactic acid bacteria.

Research innovations are constantly occurring in universities, research institutions and industrial research laboratories. These are reported in the scientific literature and presented to the scientific community in various congresses and symposia as well as through direct contacts and collaborations. Conversion of these research results to industrially useful innovations is, however, considerably more complex than generally appreciated. The long and winding road from the research laboratory to industrial applications will be illustrated with two recent examples from Chr. Hansen A/S: the implementation in industrial scale of a new production technology based on respiration by Lactococcus lactis and the introduction to the market of L. lactis strains constructed using recombinant DNA technology.

Human proteolipid protein (PLP) mediates winding and adhesion of phospholipid membranes but prevents their fusion.

Proteolipid protein (PLP or lipophilin) is a highly conserved, strongly hydrophobic, integral membrane protein, and is the major protein component of central nervous system myelin. Although PLP has been implicated in many functions, its in vivo role is still uncertain. Here, we report the investigation of PLP's putative adhesive function using purified PLP and reconstituted phospholipid vesicles made of either 100% phosphatidylcholine (PC), or a mixture of 92% PC and 8% phosphatidylserine (PS), by weight. PLP-induced changes in the phospholipid bilayer surfaces were directly examined by transmission electron microscopy. We found that upon the introduction of PLP, larger lipid vesicles became smaller and unilamellar. At the PLP:lipid molar ratio of 1:20, vesicle membranes rolled onto themselves forming 'croissant'-like structures that subsequently adhered to each other. The phenomena of PLP-induced bilayer rolling and adhesion were dependent on the concentration of PLP and the period of incubation, but were independent of the presence of calcium and types of phospholipids (PC or PC:PS). Furthermore, the presence of PLP in the lipid bilayers prevented the fusion of membranes. These findings show that PLP can induce membrane 'winding' while preventing the fusion of adjacent lipid bilayers. Hence, our data provide direct evidence for PLP's suspected function of membrane adhesion, and also suggest that PLP could potentially play a role in the formation of the myelin sheath.

The NSAID dexketoprofen trometamol is as potent as mu-opioids in the depression of wind-up and spinal cord nociceptive reflexes in normal rats.

The aim of this study was to examine the potency of the antinociceptive effects of the non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID), Dexketoprofen Trometamol (the active enantiomer of ketoprofen) on spinal cord nociceptive reflexes. These effects were compared with those of the mu-opioid receptor agonist fentanyl in normal animals. The experiments were performed in male Wistar rats anaesthetised with alpha-chloralose. The nociceptive reflexes were recorded as single motor units in peripheral muscles, activated by mechanical and electrical stimulation. Both dexketoprofen and fentanyl inhibited responses evoked by mechanical and electrical stimulation with doses in the same nanomolar range (dexketoprofen ID50s: 100 and 762 nmol kg-1 and fentanyl: 40 and 51 nmol kg-1, respectively). Dexketoprofen and fentanyl also significantly inhibited wind-up. Since fentanyl has been shown to be some 1000 times more potent than morphine in this type of experiments, we conclude that dexketoprofen has central analgesic actions in normal animals and depresses nociceptive responses with a potency similar to that of mu-opioid agonists.

Multi-model direct adaptive decoupling control with application to the wind tunnel system.

In this paper, a new multi-model direct adaptive decoupling controller is presented for multivariable processes, which includes multiple fixed optimal controllers, one free-running adaptive controller, and one re-initialized adaptive controller. The fixed controllers provide initial control to the process if its model lies in the corresponding region. For each controller selected, the re-initialized adaptive controller uses the values of this particular controller to improve the adaptation speed. This controller may replace the fixed controller at a later stage according to the switching criterion which is to select the best one among all controllers. A free-running adaptive controller is also added to guarantee the overall system stability. Different from the multiple models adaptive control structure proposed in Narendra, Balakrishnan, and Ciliz [Adaptation and learning using multiple models, switching, and tuning. IEEE Control Syst. Mag. 15, 37-51 (1995)], the method not only is applicable to the multi-input multi-output processes but also identifies the decoupling controller parameters directly, which reduces both the computational burden and the chances of a singular matrix during the process of determining controller parameters. Several examples for a wind tunnel process are given to demonstrate the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed method.

Digital redesign of anti-wind-up controller for cascaded analog system.

The cascaded conventional anti-wind-up (CAW) design method for integral controller is discussed. Then, the prediction-based digital redesign methodology is utilized to find the new pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) digital controller for effective digital control of the analog plant with input saturation constraint. The desired digital controller is determined from existing or pre-designed CAW analog controller. The proposed method provides a novel methodology for indirect digital design of a continuous-time unity output-feedback system with a cascaded analog controller as in the case of PID controllers for industrial control processes with the presence of actuator saturations. It enables us to implement an existing or pre-designed cascaded CAW analog controller via a digital controller effectively.

Directional sensitivity of an identified wind-sensitive interneuron during the postembryonic development of the locust.

Simultaneous extracellular recordings from both locust abdominal connectives show a differential activation of both bilateral homologues of an identified long projection interneuron (A4I1) in response to wind stimuli from different directions. Despite the previously shown extensive structural dynamics of sensory afferents and synaptic rearrangement of the direct afferent-to-interneuron connections during postembryonic development, a directional sensitivity is already present in first instar nymphs. Only quantitative changes in the strength of the directional response can be detected. Intracellular stainings of the A4I1 interneuron in first instar nymphs and adults show that general morphological features do not change during postembryonic development, in contrast to the presynaptic sensory afferents. This also holds for general morphological features of pleuroaxillary flight motoneurons. The output connections of A4I1 to these motoneurons and an unidentified intersegmental interneuron are already present in flightless nymphs.

Easy pleurectomy with winding up of pleural flaps.

The authors describe an effective method of performing apical pleurectomy by winding up large pleural flaps on the thoracoscopic forceps after delineating the borders of the pleurectomy with electrocautery. The method is preferred by the authors compared to abrasio of the parietal pleura or stripping the pleura in small pieces and is in their hands easier and quicker than the other methods.

Defining a synthetic pheromone blend attractive to male Heliothis subflexa under wind tunnel conditions.

Heliothis subflexa males were flown in a wind tunnel to a variety of combinations of synthetic pheromone components admixed (on a filter paper disk. Blends containing (Z)-l1-hexadecenal (Z11-16:Ald, 1000 ng), (Z)-9-hexadecenal (Z9-16:Ald, 500 ng) and (Z)-11-hexadecenol (Z11-16:OH, 10-500 ng) elicited upwind flight and source contact in 52-69% of males. All these compounds have previously been isolated and identified from female H. subflexa gland extracts and volatile pheromone emissions. Males were not attracted by blends in which Z9-16:Ald was omitted (0% source contact). Similarly, blends lacking Z11-16:OH were unattractive to male H. subflexa (39% or less source contact). Males were extremely sensitive to the presence of Z11-16:OH; ever, responding in high numbers (57-69% source contact) to blends containing a dosage of 1% (10 ng) or greater Z11-16:OH. Males were unresponsive to blends in which Z9-16:Ald was replaced with a variety of dosages of (Z)-9tetradecenal, a secondary component of a closely-related congeneric species, Heliothis virescens. Another compound present in the blend emitted by con-specific females, (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate (Z11-16:Ac), did not inhibit H. subflexa males (69% source contact) when added to the three-component mixture (1:0.5:0.1) at a ratio of 0.1 (100 ng) with respect to Z11-16:Ald. These results indicate that Z9-16:Ald and Z11-16:OH are required in addition to Z11-16:Ald to elicit significant levels of upwind flight in H. subflexa males. The effects of Z11-16:Ac are more subtle, but at the dosage tested in these experiments, this compound does not have an antagonistic effect on upwind flight and source location by H. subflexa males.

Nitrogen in solar energetic particles: isotopically distinct from solar wind.

Stepwise etching of lunar soil ilmenite grains reveals that the 15N/14N ratio of implanted nitrogen decreases with increasing implantation depth within the ilmenite grains, i.e., with increasing energy of implantation. These results show that N derived from solar energetic particles, NSEP, is enriched in the light isotope, 14N, relative to solar-wind nitrogen, NSW. This is in striking contrast to the neon isotopic record: NeSEP is depleted in the light isotope, 20Ne, relative to NeSW. These data suggest either distinct signatures in the respective solar source regions, or fractionation in the acceleration mechanism(s). However, the observed opposite fractionation trends for light N and Ne isotopes do not agree with model predictions.

Flexible filaments in a flowing soap film as a model for one-dimensional flags in a two-dimensional wind.

The dynamics of swimming fish and flapping flags involves a complicated interaction of their deformable shapes with the surrounding fluid flow. Even in the passive case of a flag, the flag exerts forces on the fluid through its own inertia and elastic responses, and is likewise acted on by hydrodynamic pressure and drag. But such couplings are not well understood. Here we study these interactions experimentally, using an analogous system of flexible filaments in flowing soap films. We find that, for a single filament (or 'flag') held at its upstream end and otherwise unconstrained, there are two distinct, stable dynamical states. The first is a stretched-straight state: the filament is immobile and aligned in the flow direction. The existence of this state seems to refute the common belief that a flag is always unstable and will flap. The second is a flapping state: the filament executes a sinuous motion in a manner akin to the flapping of a flag in the wind. We study further the hydrodynamically coupled interaction between two such filaments, and demonstrate the existence of four different dynamical states.

A wind origin for Titan's haze structure.

Titan, the largest moon of Saturn, is the only satellite in the Solar System with a dense atmosphere. Titan's atmosphere is mainly nitrogen with a surface pressure of 1.5 atmospheres and a temperature of 95 K (ref. 1). A seasonally varying haze, which appears to be the main source of heating and cooling that drives atmospheric circulation, shrouds the moon. The haze has numerous features that have remained unexplained. There are several layers, including a 'polar hood', and a pronounced hemispheric asymmetry. The upper atmosphere rotates much faster than the surface of the moon, and there is a significant latitudinal temperature asymmetry at the equinoxes. Here we describe a numerical simulation of Titan's atmosphere, which appears to explain the observed features of the haze. The critical new factor in our model is the coupling of haze formation with atmospheric dynamics, which includes a component of strong positive feedback between the haze and the winds.

A magnetic reconnection X-line extending more than 390 Earth radii in the solar wind.

Magnetic reconnection in a current sheet converts magnetic energy into particle energy, a process that is important in many laboratory, space and astrophysical contexts. It is not known at present whether reconnection is fundamentally a process that can occur over an extended region in space or whether it is patchy and unpredictable in nature. Frequent reports of small-scale flux ropes and flow channels associated with reconnection in the Earth's magnetosphere raise the possibility that reconnection is intrinsically patchy, with each reconnection X-line (the line along which oppositely directed magnetic field lines reconnect) extending at most a few Earth radii (R(E)), even though the associated current sheets span many tens or hundreds of R(E). Here we report three-spacecraft observations of accelerated flow associated with reconnection in a current sheet embedded in the solar wind flow, where the reconnection X-line extended at least 390R(E) (or 2.5 x 10(6) km). Observations of this and 27 similar events imply that reconnection is fundamentally a large-scale process. Patchy reconnection observed in the Earth's magnetosphere is therefore likely to be a geophysical effect associated with fluctuating boundary conditions, rather than a fundamental property of reconnection. Our observations also reveal, surprisingly, that reconnection can operate in a quasi-steady-state manner even when undriven by the external flow.
