[Asepsis and vigorous antisepsis against infectious disease transmission in the dental office].

Therapeutic acts often surgically practised in the dental office can lead to the transmission of infectious diseases such as A.I.D.S. To prevent this, the authors propose guideline base acts for antisepsis and asepsis. In conclusion, the authors exhort for an integration of these antiseptic acts in the efficient working of the dental office for an effective prevention of these infectious diseases in the area.

[Catheter induced rupture of a proximal pulmonary artery caused by vigorous coughing in a spontaneously breathing patient].

A complication is occurred during insertion of a pulmonary artery catheter in a 73-year-old woman with class III NYHA cardiac failure. After easy insertion of the catheter, massive haemoptysis developed as the patient coughed while the balloon of the catheter was inflated. Despite prompt emergency measures, the patient did not survive. Autopsy revealed a 2.7-cm perforation of the proximal pulmonary artery with penetration into the right lower lobe bronchus. This complication and its prevention are discussed.

Why are lung allografts more vigorously rejected than hearts?

The fact that lungs are more prone to rejection than hearts was studied in a fully allogeneic rat strains combination. Between these strains, lung rejection was significantly faster than that of the heart (mean survival time of 4.0 versus 6.8 days). The mucosal immune system transplanted within the lung allograft was found to intensify the recipient's immune response in several ways. First, it facilitates the infiltration of the graft by recipient lymphocytes. Secondly, it provides a strong stimulus for the local immune response in the graft itself, and lastly, the dissimination of donor lymphocytes from the graft into the recipient generates a systemic immune response.

The effect of vigorous treadmill exercise on adipose tissue development in the Zucker rat.

Four-week-old male lean and obese Zucker rats were subjected to intense daily exercise for a 10-week period. The exercise regimen used (running 6 days/week for 90 min/day on a treadmill at 1.3 Km/h at an 8 per cent grade) was designed to maximize the amount of exercise performed. Lean and obese runners (LR and OR) gained significantly less weight than sedentary controls (LS and OS). Food intake was lower in LR and unchanged in OR compared with control animals. Exercise increased adrenal weight in runners of both phenotypes. Gastrocnemius muscle weight was significantly higher in OR compared to OS. Despite the intense exercise regimen, carcass fat of OR was reduced only 12 per cent versus OS. In contrast, exercise decreased carcass fat by 32 per cent in LR versus LS. This decrease in body fat of LR was due to smaller adipocytes. Exercise did not affect adipocyte size in obese rats. However, OR had fewer carcass adipocytes. These results indicate that exercise had substantially different effects on adipose tissue cellularity of lean and obese rats. The results of the present study indicate that a program of intense treadmill exercise initiated immediately post weaning only modestly reduced adipose tissue growth in obese Zucker rats. Furthermore, it did not normalize body composition.
