Eating problems and nutritional status during hospital stay of patients with severe stroke.

Eating problems and nutritional status were studied in a consecutive series of patients who had had strokes. From this cohort, 32 subjects (mean age 73 years) with a hospital stay of 21 days or more are described. Eating problems were identified by direct participant observations of the patients' eating behavior, interviews on admission, inspections of the mouth, and discussions with the patients. Nutritional status was assessed by weight, triceps skinfold thickness (TSF), arm muscular circumference (AMC), plasma albumin, serum transferrin, and plasma prealbumin on admission and then weekly. Eating problems were identified in 27 patients. In a general linear hypothesis program, poor nutritional status 3 weeks after admission was found to be associated with (in decreasing order) low self-care performance, poor nutritional status on admission, male sex, intravenous energy-containing fluids, advanced age, paresis of the right arm, and eating problems. Factors other than eating problems seem to be important for undernutrition in patients with strokes during hospital stay.

Quantitative structure-activity relationships. V. A simple simple algorithm for Fujita-Ban and Free-Wilson analyses.

For quantitative structure-activity analyses a simple algorithm for the calculation of de novo group contributions by Fujita-Ban analysis is given. This algorithm corresponds in all details to a computer program for linear multiple regression analysis. However, the transformation of the original matrix to the normal equations matrix is easily achieved without a computer. The normal equations matrix can be solved with a modern desk calculator being equipped with a matrix ROM. Two examples are given to explain the algorithm; the calculation of all important statistical parameters is illustrated. As for quantitative structure-activity analyses this algorithm can be applied as well for the calculation of other additive parameters, such as pi from log P-values or omega from equilibrium constants.

Computerized gas-liquid chromatographic method for content uniformity analysis of dicyclomine hydrochloride capsules and tablets.

An automated, computerized method is presented for the content uniformity determination of dicyclomine hydrochloride capsules and tablets, using up to 4 automatic sampler-equipped gas chromatographs interfaced with a minicomputer. A 3% OV-17 column is used with anthracene as an internal standard. Five sample injections are bracketed by standard mixtures containing about 90 and 110% of the labeled dicyclomine hydrochloride. Data are taken on-line simultaneously from each gas chromatograph and a computer-generated report is produced. Calculations use a BASIC program with linear fit of the 90 and 110% standard mixture. Individual tablet or capsule results are printed in milligrams and per cent declared, including summary calculations of average, high, low, standard deviation, and coefficient of variation. The GLC results are comparable (within 1%) to those obtained using the USP procedure.
