[Present regulation on infant and follow-on formula].

BACKGROUND: The commercialization of breast milk substitutes has had great economic transcendence, sometimes without considering the sanitary and nutritional consequences for the customer. The sanitary authorities have been implied in this matter both in the International and European fields, issuing standards and regulations for the commercialization of breast milk substitutes which have been adopted by the Spanish Regulation. The aim of this paper is comment the regulations that affect foods for breast-feeding and short age children. METHODS: This report analyzes and comments on the contents of international, european and national regulation on infant and follow-on formula. RESULTS: The regulations about Infant formula and Follow-on formula, banning the term of "humanized milk" and remarking the preference for breast feeding, which could only be substituted by sanitary professionals. This regulation deals with the appropriate chemical composition of these products, qualitative and quantitative. It includes standards for correct labeling, which should contain the appropriate information without idealizing the product Drawings and pictures showing the correct preparation are allowed. It provides for distribution and sales, as well as for correct advertising, which should be under control. This regulation also bans free samples and any other donation to particular customers or sanitary institutions. CONCLUSIONS: The present regulation on "Infant and Follow-on formulas" pursues the adequate nutrition of breast-feeding and short age children, being the protection of this kind of customers everyone's responsibility.

Effectiveness of Bifidobacterium bifidum in experimentally induced MRV infection: dietary implications in formulas for newborns.

The protective effect of a human strain of Bifidobacterium bifidum (B. bifidum) against murine Group A rotavirus (MRV) was examined in the intestines of BALB/c infected mice. In experiments designed to determine whether B. bifidum mediated MRV shedding during diarrheal disease, pregnant dams (and their expected litters) were randomly assigned to the following groups: 1. Mice infected with MRV alone; 2. B. bifidum treated + MRV infected mice; 3. B. bifidum treated controls; 4. Saline control animals. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of group A rotavirus was used to measure virus protein. Treatment with B. bifidum significantly reduced shedding of MRV antigen (P < 0.009) days 2-10 post-inoculation. The reduction in shedding of virus protein corresponded well with delayed onset of acute diarrhea (P < 0.02). Closer examination of tissue cross-sections under electron microscopy revealed that the B. bifidum ingested strain adhered to the epithelium of the small intestine. In further experiments, adherent properties of the ingested strain were related to enhancement, although nonsignificant, in immunoglobulin secreting cell responses in Peyer's patch lymphocytes. These results suggest that priming the intestine with B. bifidum is effective against experimental MRV challenge. Closer examination of B. bifidum and related growth factors in suckling neonates on gut physiology and enhancement of local immune responses has potential dietary implications in formulas for newborns.

[Measuring fecal lipid output in infants receiving a neonatal milk-based formula].

Fecal fat output was measured over three days in ten infants aged 28 to 115 days fed an infant formula (SMA Comfort, Sodilac) containing 39.2% unsaturated fatty acids and 20.1% medium-chain triglycerides (C8, C10, and C12). Fat intake ranged from 59.32 to 136.80 g. Mean fat absorption coefficient was 96 +/- 2%. SMA Comfort offers a fat absorption coefficient comparable to that seen with breast milk.

Vitamin D in infant formula and enteral products by liquid chromatography: collaborative study.

Results from a collaborative study of a new liquid chromatographic (LC) method for determination of vitamin D in infant formulas and enteral products are presented. Each of 15 laboratories was provided with 11 blind duplicate samples covering a range of approximately 200-500 International Units/quart (normal dilution), a system suitability sample, and the U.S. Pharmacopeia ergo- and cholecalciferol standards. Product types included liquid and powder forms of milk (whey and casein), soy, and hydrolyzed protein-based infant formulas and enteral products. The method includes a single liquid-liquid extraction following saponification, solid-phase extraction, and then concentration by evaporation. An isocratic, nonaqueous, chromatographic system with reversed-phase, zero endcapped C18 column, and UV detector set at 265 nm are used. Statistical evaluation of data from participating laboratories show the average reproducibility and repeatability of the method across all samples to be excellent, with RSDR and RSDr values of 13.48 and 9.44, respectively, after elimination of outliers. The LC method for determination of vitamin D in infant formulas and enteral products has been adopted by AOAC INTERNATIONAL.

[Infant formula follow-up: an update].

The work presents and comments on, the recommendations of the European Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, European Communities Commission and FAO/WHO regarding the composition of infant formulae and follow-up formulae. The survey is aimed at facilitating selection of adequate formula's out of their abundance on the Polish market.

Determination of selenium in infant formula and enteral formula by dry ash graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry with deuterium background correction.

A method was developed to determine selenium in infant formula using a graphite furnace equipped with deuterium background correction after dry ashing. The method circumvents the use of perchloric acid, 2,3-diaminonapthalene (DAN) and hydride generation without the use of Zeeman background correction. Twelve commercial infant and enteral formulas and corresponding spiked products (30-500 ng) were analyzed in triplicate for Se to evaluate this method. All test portions were digested on a hot plate after addition of magnesium nitrate-nitric acid. Following heating, digests were evaporated to dryness and placed in a 500 degrees C muffle furnace for 30 min to complete ashing. All Se was converted to Se+4 by dissolving the ash in HCl (5 + 1) and holding the solution for 20 min in a 60 degrees C water bath. Se+4 was subsequently reduced to Se(zero) with ascorbic acid and collected on a membrane filter. The membrane filters were digested in a small volume of nitric acid in a microwave oven. Following digestion, contents of the vessels were diluted and analyzed for Se by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Selenium standards in starch or in unfortified formula containing trace levels of Se were carried through the entire process. The recovery range for Se was 85-127%, and analyzed reference materials fell within their certified range for Se. This method is as sensitive (detection limit 0.44 ng Se/g) as methods reported in the literature and may be applicable to other foods.
