Recent developments in methods of mosquito control.

Since residual insecticide spraying in domiciles does not sufficiently control some species of anophelines to halt malaria transmission, alternate methods of control have been investigated. These include ultra-low-volume (ULV) sprays or aerosols, the release of sterile males to suppress or eradicate populations, and the use of diseases or parasites to interfere with transmission or to reduce populations of mosquitos. The ULV aerial sprays gave practical control of Anopheles albimanus in Haiti and interrupted malaria transmission. The release of sterile males almost eliminated an isolated population of A. albimanus in a small valley in El Salvador. Studies are in progress to evaluate the effect on field populations of anophelines of a protozoan disease and two nematode parasites.

Use of KT 50 for orientative evaluation (screening) of sensitivity of flies to insecticides.

The author describes a modification of the method of determining the median knock-down time (KT50) in flies and its utilization for orientative determination of the current sensitivity of flies under field conditions. The method and its reliability were tested both in the laboratory and in field trials and were found to be entirely adequate and sufficiently reliable for the required purpose.

[Preliminary studies on levels of sensitivity to phosphoric esters in the Italian population of the Culex pipiens complex].

A preliminary survey of the susceptibility level to organophosphate (OP) insecticides in six populations of Culex pipiens from Central Italy has been carried out. The correlation between OP resistance and highly active esterase electromorphs has also been investigated. The bioassay and electrophoresis results show an association between OP resistance and the highly active esterase allele Est-3A and confirm what it was found in populations of C. pipiens from Southern France. Est-3A appears to be a reliable indicator of OP resistance in mosquitoes of italian C. pipiens.

Recent developments of insecticide resistance in some Turkish anophelines.

Susceptibility tests carried out since 1974 in both the field and the laboratory with Anopheles sacharovi, A. hyrcanus and A. maculipennis from Turkey have revealed resistance to organophosphate and carbamate insecticides in all three species, in the first two in the southern Chukurova plain and in the third in the northern area around Osmanjik. Resistance was indicated by significant survivals when exposed to dosages killing presumed susceptible strains of these and other anopheline species. The temperature at which the susceptibility tests were carried out had a marked influence on mortalities. Broad spectra of resistance were shown by all three species, though with interspecific differences, and are attributed to the extensive and intensive use of a wide range of chemicals for agricultural pest control. Of the insecticides readily available for house-spraying for malaria control, malathion would appear to be the one with the greatest potential usefulness.

[Attempts at time-related control of bovine hypodermiasis at scattered or grouped farms].

The control was performed by a unic systemic autumn treatment on heifers and repeated topical spring treatments on dairy cows. After a four years programme, limited success are obtained. No difference in the efficacy are observed in isolated or grouped farms. A good estimation of infestation cannot be obtained by only one or two numerations of warbles in spring. Repetitive of topical spring treatments on dairy cows appears to be the major limitating factor of success in these programmes.
